Dodgers beat champion Giants in opener (AP)

Sloppy Giants lose to Dodgers on Opening Night

Opening Day can be a beautiful thing for baseball fans. But tonight, it was fugly for Giants fans.

Clayton Kershaw pitched seven shutout innings and the San Francisco Giants committed three errors as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the World Champs 2-1 at Dodger Stadium in a nationally televised game on ESPN.

Most of my readers know how much I harped on the Giants' horrible defense during Spring Training. Tonight was a very good example of that. Three errors is all the ducking Fodgers needed to beat Tim Lincecum.

The sloppy defense really hurt the Giants the most in the 6th inning. After a one-out walk to Matt Kemp, Dodgers first baseman James Loney hit a routine double-play grounder to new Giant Miguel Tejada, who threw the ball wide of the bag at second base. Kemp scampered to third on the play. Lincecum then nailed former teammate Juan Uribe on the very next pitch to load the bases. With Rod Barajas batting and Kemp's back to home plate, Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval motioned for catcher Buster Posey to attempt a pickoff move at third. Posey's throw was behind Sandoval and Kemp scored easily on the overthrow.

Giants rookie Brandon Belt, who was named the team's Opening Day first baseman collected a hit in his first Major League at bat, an infield single in which he beat out the throw from James Loney to Kershaw covering. Belt, who is the fifth youngest Giant to start at first base on Opening Day, later walked and ended the night 1-for-3. Orlando Cepeda was 20.210 years old when he made his Giants debut in 1958. Will Clark was 22.026 in 1986, Willie McCovey was 22.092 in 1960 and Steve Ontiveros was 22.161 in 1974. Belt is 22.345 years old.

Other notes:

  • Since 1900, the Giants lead the National League with a 9,222-7,982 record (.536).
  • Since 2009, they have posted the second-best winning percentage (.556) as well as the second-most wins (180) in the NL, behind only the Philadelphia Phillies (.586, 190 wins)
  • The Giants are looking to become the first team in baseball to repeat as World Series champs since the 2000 Yankees won consecutive titles three years in row (1998, 1999, 2000). Only 3 NL teams have repeated as Word Series winners, and just one in the last 85 years (1975-76 Cincinnati Reds).

Yes, more Star Trek. I know, there can never be enough Star Trek in our lives. This is a 2-for-1 deal involving the ultimate good guy, and the ultimate bad guy. James T. Kirk and Khan Noonien Singh. About 15 years ago I had a co-worker who said they knew a guy, who knew a [...]
