Cody had this to say:
Santana, the top free-agent prize of the winter, makes his first start as a National League pitcher today for the Mets.
"It'd be nice to welcome him with his first loss,'' said Ross, who will face the two-time Cy Young Award winner for the first time today. "But it's going to be tough. He's an unbelievable pitcher.''
Why not?
I love opening day!

They just stay at home and watch TV.
Proof of such popularity is in the TV ratings of local telecasts, which are at least in line with most major-league teams.
The team and its flagship station, FSN Florida, won't release figures, but an industry source confirmed that the Marlins have better local ratings than the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Chicago White Sox, the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics.
Despite the team's worst record in nine seasons, the Marlins' local ratings were up 10 percent last year.
"We are very pleased with the Marlins," said Amy Pempel, media relations director for FSN Florida and Sun Sports. "They have plenty of fans who are very passionate and have stuck with the team."
It is kinda what most of us suspected, Marlins fans rather, than making that long drive to JRS and paying all the tolls along the way and forking over $10 dollars for parking, stay at home and watch the game as presented to them by Rich and Tommy.
If there is problem with that it will show up if/when the Marlins get a new stadium, I don't know about you, but I enjoy the Rich and Tommy show and it is a lot more convenient, not to mention cheaper, than going to the park.
But nothing beats seeing a baseball live, so eventually that should win out.
On other good news is that the tide is turning and the Marlins may become the top sports team in the area.
More encouraging numbers: A recent survey measuring fan loyalty locally, conducted by Scarborough Research from February 2006 to January 2007, showed the Marlins had more fans in Miami-Dade County than the Dolphins.
And people wonder why the possible new stadium will be built in Miami-Dade?

New public-financed baseball stadiums are one of the hottest trends in baseball. Some of these new stadiums are mostly funded by the tax-payers (the proposed Marlins park in a few years andPNC Park a few years ago).
I think that if the public is paying for the new stadiums, then the team's should be required to open their books and show what the public is paying for. For example, I think the Marlins should be required to show every year where their revenue sharing money is being spent.
What do you think?

As Mbaamin reported in the comments yesterday, De Aza is on the DL.
De Aza has a high ankle sprain and is out four to six weeks. He was placed on the DL today and recalled infielder Robert Andino. They also reassigned outfielder Alexis Gomez to Minor League camp. Interesting move. I hear now that Ross will platoon in center with Amezaga.
This is a very interesting move and bringing up Andino does mean the club plans to use Amezaga as a platoon center fielder for the first part of season. This is very curious to me since the Marlins recalled Brett Carroll earlier, a move I highly support, to play the outfield. On the surface this means that the franchise believes that Louis Gonzalez can't handle the everyday duties in right and therefore needs Carroll to spell him until Hermida is ready to go. There is little doubt that Carroll is a better outfielder than Amezaga, which would lead me to believe that when Hermida returns, possibly as early as Saturday, that Andino will be sent to Albuquerque and Carroll will handle the center field platoon.
If Cody wasn't a little bit gimpy, I would be hard pressed to understand why the Marlins feel the need to platoon in center in the first place. But he is and it may be necessary at the start of season to ensure he stays healthy throughout.

Add to myYahoo! You can check out my predictions over at the Hardball Times this morning. People will call me crazy for picking the Reds to win the National League pennant but I really think this team has some talent (although some of it got kicked down to Triple A to start the season). I also think giving [...]

Well, I'll have a full writeup of FanFest when I have more than five minutes to myself this week. Between dealing with my lovely girlfriend, baseball, more baseball, plus my media commitments, I have not had much time to blog.
I am little sad but at the same time rejoicing the release of Jay Gibbons. Like I have said over and over, he was always a nice guy when I talked to him; however, if you seemingly lose all talent and everything else, you don't deserve to have a job.
He could not take a up roster spot that a better, more versatile guy could not have held; alas, he got sent on his way.
I hope the guy the best of luck, but I think his days may be numbered as an MLB player unless he can latch on with someone who will give him regular at bats.
Brian Roberts: I wanted the guy traded for the long-term future of the organization, but you have to respect how's he handled the news and everything else.
Baseball season is here -- the question is now how bad will the Orioles be, or will there be some kind of miracle?
At least the scoreboard looks awesome.
Oh yeah, I saw the first game in Washington yesterday, so if you care, check out the DC Sports Box...

It's Spring -- the usual inability to focus at work is expected, but this? Affectionately calling your wife A-Rod? Using hand signals at the dinner table? Slapping the butt of a potential client when a handshake would have been appropriate? It happens -- especially to those baseball fans experiencing "Opening Day Syndrome." Not sure what it is, or if you or someone you love has it? Check out www.bankofamerica.com/youknowbaseball and take the "Are You a Real Fan" poll to find out. And just in case you're in really deep, the site has downloadable tools like wallet card affirmations, office door "do not disturb" signs (see attached sample) , and a boss' excuse note to help get you through it. You can also take the Trivia Challenge for
a chance to win an all-expense paid trip for two to the 2008 All Star Game in NY. Now THAT's what the doctor ordered!
Also, per a recent poll of avid baseball baseball fans by Bank of America, did you know:
-20 percent spend less time with their significant other during baseball season
-20 percent would miss an important business meeting to attend an Opening Day game
-15 percent ?made up an excuse? about their whereabouts on Opening Day to their boss, spouse or significant other
-25 percent listen to or watch the game on the Internet at work; 40 percent listen on radio at work
-20 percent consider the distance to the stadium when shopping for a home
Red Sox and Yankees fans, among the most passionate, take some of the these behaviors to the next level
-35 percent of Red Sox fans would blow off an important business meeting to attend the first baseball game of the season at Fenway Park; by comparison
-60 percent of Sox fans would allow their child to skip school for an opening day game; 50 percent of Yankee fans said the first home game of the season was an acceptable excuse for skipping school.
