ST. LOUIS (AP) — Michael Morse circled the bases for a grand slam after taking an imaginary swing, and the Washington Nationals cut their magic number for winning the NL East to one Saturday night, beating St. Louis 6-4 on Kurt Suzuki’s two-run double in the 10th inning.

The New York Mets had no answer for Mike Minor tonight, as the young Braves lefty shut down New York for 6.1 innings. Atlanta's offense didn't have much of an answer for Chris Young either, but were able to push across a pair of runs, which was one more than Minor and the Braves' bullpen would need.
After a lackluster offensive showing last night, the Braves wasted no time in getting on the board. In the first, Martin Prado sliced a one-out double down the right field line, and promptly took third on a pitch Chris Young threw over his catcher's head. A Jason Heyward groundout would score Prado and would be all the cushion Mike Minor would need.
Atlanta would notch one more run in the fifth inning, when Andrelton Simmons singled and scored on a two-out double by Martin Prado. Prado missed a home run by about a foot, and the double was his 93rd two-strike hit of the year, a remarkable statistic. Prado and Simmons each had a pair of hits, and combined for half of Atlanta's hits on the evening. Dan Uggla also added a pair and was the only other Brave to notch a multi-hit game.
As for Minor, there's not much to say about him other than that he was fantastic. He located all his pitches well and changed speeds effectively all night. Fredi pulled him in the 7th when he allowed a one-out double, but Chad Durbin and Luis Avilan stranded the runner. Minor's final line was 6.1 innings pitched, allowing only 3 hits and no walks while striking out 4. The win was his 11th of the year and brought his season ERA down to 4.12. For a pitcher who was sporting an ERA over 6 near midseason, it's been a stellar turnaround. Kudos to the Braves for sticking with him, and kudos to Minor for persevering and figuring things out. He, Medlen, and Hudson look to be a scary top 3 right now.
Atlanta will go for the series win tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 p.m. EST. Kris Medlen will make his last start for Atlanta before the Wild Card game. The Mets counter with Jenrry Mejia.

Thereis no measurable statistic that supports Andruw Jones? spot on the 2012 NewYork Yankees roster. None. There has tobe something that I am missing so if somebody can explain it to me, I am allears. More importantly though, someone needs to tell it to Girardi. Don?t get me wrong, he was fantastic lastyear in his role. Against southpaws, Jones put up an OPS of .923 as well as anOBP of .384 in 126 at-bats. Itis now September (almost October) 2012, and for the life of me, I cannot wrapmy head around the reasoning behind him getting playing time. He should havebeen shown the door a long time ago but if he is still here on September 29th,I do not expect him to be cut with only one series left in the regular season. What the Yankees can do though is not put Jones on the postseason roster. Itwon?t excuse the ridiculous amount of leeway that he has received from theorganization, but at least he won?t be able to hurt them when it matters most. Againstlefty pitching, Jones is sporting an OPS of .713 to go along with an OBP of.297. Since the All-Star Break, those numbers turn into .524 and .262. Just forkicks, check out his numbers in September. If you don?t feel like it, .593 and.259. He has walked more than he has struck out but when you are putting upnumbers like that, there is not even a way someone can say ?Well at least, hehas drawn a couple walks.? The more you break him down, the worse he looks, andthat is not even taking his lack of hustle when he does play. On the rareoccasion when he has to hustle, we?ve seen him strolling down to firstseemingly without a care in the world. I know that is just pseudo-psychology onmy part, but I am just sick to death of watching this guy play. Ijust cannot understand what the Yankee brass sees in this guy. I would kind ofunderstand if he was a lifetime guy like Jeter or Posada but if the AtlantaBraves can let him walk, I don?t see why the Yankees can?t. Let Melky Mesa getsome at-bats, he is an upgrade over Jones. His base running blunder aside, hehas excellent speed, can swipe a bag, and play great defense while showing somegood power. I would be fine with Chris Dickerson playing, I don?t really carewho it is. When you consistently do the same thing over and over again while expectingdifferent results that is insanity. TheNew York Yankees need to keep him as far away from the postseason roster aspossible but I doubt that will happen. For some reason, they think that being aveteran trumps inexperience even if that veteran is completely useless.
