Braves top Reds on Jones single in 12th (AP)

Chipper Jones’ single in the 12th inning drove in Jordan Schafer to give the Atlanta Braves a 7-6 win over the weary Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night. Brian McCann had four hits, including two homers. Freddie Freeman also homered for Atlanta. It was the second extra-inning game in four days for the Reds, who lost [...]

Duke wins, homers in Diamondbacks debut (AP)

As a pitcher, Zach Duke isn’t a fan of the short, 315-foot left-field fence known as the Crawford Boxes at Minute Maid Park. As a hitter, he has a different opinion. Duke allowed three hits over seven innings and hit an opposite-field, three-run homer in his first game of the season, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks [...]

Sean O`Sullivan Has His Vin Mazzaro Moment as
Royals Fall to Rangers

The long baseball season has a way of making every worst case scenario come true, eventually. We all knew heading into this season that the Royals had almost nothing, literally almost nothing, by way of starting pitching, and that no matter how good the bullpen was and how improved the offense might be, it was going to be hard to survive the daily grind with no good or long or both starts ever. And that has more or less happened in the last month.

Tonight the Royals were coming off of back to back extra inning contests, and what has felt like a month long stretch of four and five reliever outings. Day after day. Night after night. They needed innings and they needed a good start, when they handed the ball to Sean O`Sullivan tonight in Texas.

They got the innings, almost. They certainly didn't get the good performance.

A worrying sign for 2012 is that it is increasingly evident that the Royals have nearly an entire rotation to build from scratch. I don't see it.

Hamels Ks 10 as Phils down slumping Mets (AP)

Ryan Howard hit a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning and Cole Hamels finally beat a familiar nemesis, pitching the Philadelphia Phillies past the slumping New York Mets 5-2 on Saturday night. Hamels (7-2) struck out a season-high 10 and walked none over seven innings to win his third straight outing and improve to 3-9 [...]

Duke wins, homers in Arizona debut (AP)

Zach Duke allowed three hits over seven innings and hit a three-run homer in his first game of the season, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 11-3 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday night. Duke’s first home run in seven major league seasons came in the Diamondbacks’ four-run fourth inning, a shot over the [...]

Fill-in Swarzak helps Twins win in 10 (AP)

Danny Valencia hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 1-0 victory over Los Angeles on Saturday night after spot starter Anthony Swarzak held the Angels hitless into the eighth. Swarzak, a late fill-in on the mound for Francisco Liriano, gave up a one-out double in [...]

Phillies 5 Mets 2 May 28, 2011

The Phillies took the series with the win tonight and sent the Mets to their third straight loss and sixth in seven games. The only saving grace is that Mike Pelfrey escaped taking the loss because he had a huge game going 7.2 innings and allowing only 2 runs. He lowered his season ERA to ... Continue Reading

Saturday Pebble Report: Shoot-out for Nuts,
Pitcher's Duel for Sky Sox

The affiliates went 3-1 last night, with a couple of wins coming in atypical fashion.

Colorado Springs 2, Fresno 1

The Sky Sox (20-29), who have struggled to keep anyone off the board in 2011, won a pitcher's duel. Colorado Springs scored two in the 4th inning on a Matt Macri double, and that's all they would need. PuRPs Charlie Blackmon and Chris Nelson both had multi-hit games to lead the Sky Sox. Billy Buckner (1-1) got the win with five shutout innings. Jim Miller gave up Fresno's only run of the game, a solo shot in the 9th, but picked up his 3rd save.

Tulsa 9, Midland 5

The Drillers (25-21) won on the strength of three 3-run innings (in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th). Six different players had multi-hit games for the Drillers (who had 16 hits in all). James Cesario led Tulsa with a 3-5 night, a 3 run homer, and five RBIs, while the resurgent Scott Beerer added a 4-5 night. Rob Scahill earned the win (4-3) with seven innings of two run ball, while Adam Jorgenson got his 11th save of the year.

Modesto 18, High Desert 10

If you want an idea of what baseball would look like if it were played on the moon, look no farther than High Desert. The Nuts (23-25) had 20 hits on the night and had five innings in which they scored multiple runs. Seven players had multi-hit games and four had three or more hits. Leading the way for Modesto offensively was 1B Kiel Roling, who went 4-6 with his 6th and 7th homers, driving in five men in all. Modesto's other big boppers, RF Mike Zuanich and 3B Nolan Arenado (PuRP 4), each added three hits and a home-run (11 for Zuanich, 5 for Arenado).

Even noted glove man Josh Rutledge got in the act, with the shortstop going 3-6 with a double, a triple, and 4 RBIs. Rutledge has really been impressive in High A, hitting a singles-heavy .315/.415/.396.

Top PuRP Tyler Matzek started, but unfortunately he didn't stick around long enough to take advantage of the great run support. He lasted only one inning, giving up five runs on three hits and five walks -- yuck. Matzek's ERA is now at 9.82, while his K/BB ratio is 37/46 -- it's safe to call Matzek's 2011 campaign a disaster so far.

Alan DeRatt got the win (3-2) though he allowed five runs and nine hits in four innings. Coty Woods then came in and shut High Desert down, going four scoreless innings to record his first save of the year.

Hagerstown 8, Asheville 6

The Tourists (22-26) weren't able to take advantage of 5 Hagerstown errors as they lost a close one. Toolsy shortstop Cristhian Adames went 3-4 with 2 RBIs to lead Asheville offensively. PuRP Kyle Parker (6) and Dustin Garneau (5) each added solo homers for Asheville, while Chandler Laurent contributed a double and triple.

Peter Tago's second start wasn't as successful as his first one, as he gave up four runs (two earned) in four innings on six hits and five walks. Nonetheless, Asheville took a one run lead into the 8th inning, but Bruce Kern blew up, allowing four runs (two earned) on two hits.

Rangers hit 3 consecutive HRs in rout (AP)

Mitch Moreland, Mike Napoli and Endy Chavez hit consecutive homers to match a club record and back Matt Harrison’s five-hit shutout pitching over six innings as the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals 10-1 on Saturday night. Three straight Rangers homered for the fifth time in club history.
