(Instead of a normal game summary, JBigman was actually at the game today and provides us with this summary of the day's events.)
Greetings from Spring Training
I?m the ?old guy? of the new writers. Been a Yankee fan all of my 51 years. I?ve lived in Florida last 15 years but still keep my NY roots.
38 degrees in NY, 40 in Detroit but a beautiful 75 degrees in Lakeland, Florida for the Yanks-Tigers today. A little pre-game fun as Chan Ho Park gets used to being a Yankee by signing autographs and then playing catch for 20 minutes with all of the kids on the berm in Center Field at Joker Marchant Stadium. Joba also started signing in CF and this ?reporter? caught up with him for a little chat:
SIH: Joba, What would you like to say to your loyal fans over at the Sliding into Home Blog?
Joba: Tell them I said ?Hello?
SIH: What was the best part of last year for you?
Joba: ?Winning?
That?s Joba Chamberlain, man of few words.
Joba?s Dad was also at the game and was a little more talkative than his talented son. He told us how he hit .505 in American Legion ball and how disappointed he was that Phil Coke was traded (Joba and Phil came through the system together and Harlan saw Phil?s parents at the game).
Joker Marchant looks pretty good for a 45-year-old park after numerous facelifts. Today?s game set a new attendance record ? 10,219 and numerous birds dropping aerial bombs. I saw at least 2 make direct hits, the first on a proud Yank fan ? that?s good luck isn?t it? When at Joker Marchant, don?t keep your mouth open when you look up.
Pitching matchup was AJ vs. Nate Robertson, who is trying to hang onto his job in the Tiger rotation. Robertson pitched in & out of trouble but was touched for the Yanks only 2 runs on an RBI double by crowd favorite Curtis Granderson (nice 2 for 4 day) and HR by former Tiger and past/present Yank Marcus Thames. AJ pitched very well, going 6 2/3, allowing 3 hits and a run, but didn?t have the sharp breaking strikeout pitch going. Jorge & AJ shared a nice moment as AJ got out of trouble in the 6th and seem to be going out of their way to make nice with each other.
Some of the young Yanks & Tigers looked overmatched at the plate including Ajax, Kevin Russo & Brandon Laird. Tigers rookie 2B Sizemore looked more ready, hitting line drives all day.
Most impressive performance of the day was from Joel Zumaya who finally looks all the way back to his 2006 self. He K?ed the side in the 6th making Granderson look helpless with 100mph high heat (and 83mph curve) and reached 101 on gun against Pena.
Yanks 2, Tigers 1. WP: AJ Burnett, S: Joba Chamberlain. Here's the box score.
On to Tampa to see the same two clubs battle tomorrow. Hopefully, I?ll see full Yank lineup as only Posada, Gardner, Granderson & Johnson of the regulars made the trip today.

Add to myYahoo!Joba came into today spring game and he wasn't exactly spotless. He allowed 2 hits but struck out 1 while leading the Yankees to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers. Burnett had a good long outing 6 and 2/3 giving up 1 run and 3 hits. Thames homered (about time) and Grandy got 2 hits. The Yanks play the Tigers again tomorrow and the game is at 1. It will be on YES most of the games this week haven't so I am very pleased. You can watch the Yankees at 1 and that will lead into the NCAA tournament which I believe starts at 2.
My Fantasy draft is tomorrow and I am very excited. My team name is Country Strong since my team's emotional leader is Adam Dunn.
Here is a great picture from today, Coke is saying hello to his old catcher:

Add to myYahoo!Game Twenty-Five - Cubs 2 Padres (ss) 2 - 10 Innings
WP - None LP - None Save - None
In front of a record crowd of 13,462 at HoHoKam Park, Tyler Colvin continued making his case to break camp with the big league club. Colvin finished the game 4-for-5, drove in both Cubs' runs and finished a double short of a cycle. Colvin hit in the leadoff spot and tallied half of the Cubs eight hits against Padres' pitching.
Tyler Colvin, a left-handed hitter, recorded two of his four hits off of Clayton Richard, a southpaw. Colvin singled to left in the first but was thrown out trying to steal second. Colvin's home run to right into the wind in the fifth also came off Richard ... the only run allowed by Clayton Richard in his five innings of work. Richard struck out seven on the afternoon.
Tyler Colvin tied the game at two in the seventh with a triple to left center that plated Mike Fontenot.
Saturday afternoon was 'The Tyler Colvin Show'
Carlos Silva made his fifth start of the spring and put together a decent outing. Silva continued to throw strikes and did not walk a batter. Silva gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings on seven hits with three strikeouts ... but only one run while he was on the mound. Silva kept the ball down for the most part and benefited by the wind blowing in.
One of the two runs Silva allowed came courtesy of the high sky in Arizona. Marlon Byrd lost a ball in the sun, and wind, that ended up being a triple for Oscar Salazar. Nick Hundley doubled in Salazar with one out in the sixth that ended Silva's day.
Esmailin Caridad replaced Silva and threw the ball rather well ... but was credited with allowing an inherited runner to score after Geovany Soto's throw to third ended up in left field.
After walking the first batter he faced in the ninth, Carlos Marmol settled down and threw strikes. Marmol struck out the last two batters he faced.
Before the game, the Cubs made two roster moves. Andres Blanco was traded to the Rangers for a PTBNL or cash considerations and Mike Parisi was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs' Spring Training roster is officially at 31 players ... but Chris Robinson has been told he will not make the team and both Ted Lilly and Angel Guzman are still on the active roster.
With the third tie of the spring, the Cubs Cactus League record stands at 13-9-3 ...

Tim Redding didn't do himself any favors with his outing today.
Well, after today the competition for the last bullpen slot on the Opening Day roster might have gotten one smaller. Tim Redding, who had been entrusted with a 2-1 Rockies lead, gave up five runs on seven hits out of the bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings as the Rockies lost 6-2, dropping their Cactus League record to 14-11-1.
Now, I'm not a proponent of judging a player based on Spring Training stats, but I just felt like today Redding had an opportunity to show that he could pitch effectively out of the bullpen and didn't come through. His lack of experience in a bullpen role, reputation as a poor chemistry guy, and hideous facial hair decisions had gotten him off on the wrong foot with me and this outing did nothing to change my mind. Hopefully, Joe Beimel can provide a strong performance in his Spring debut monday and seize that last bullpen slot.
Redding's "performance" wasted a nice effort by Aaron Cook, who went six innings and gave up one run on six hits against a White Sox lineup consisting of several MLB regulars, getting 9 of his 13 outs in play via the ground ball. Meanwhile, Ian Stewart and Clint Barmes each had multi-hit games (one double apiece) for Colorado.
It was a quiet, pleasant Saturday afternoon game thread until Redding entered the game.

Add to myYahoo!A.J. Burnett was handed the ball today to start against the Tigers, and he pitched really well. Burnett’s line was: W, 6.2IP 3H 1R 1ER 3BB 2K. With the win, his spring record moves to (W-L, 1-1). David Robertson came on in relief and recorded the last out of the 7th inning with ease. Chan Ho Park pitched a scoreless 8th [...]
