Cardinals miss chance for wild-card tie (AP)

St. Louis missed out on a chance to join Atlanta atop the wild-card standings when Brian Bogusevic scored on Angel Sanchez’s bunt in the 10th inning Monday night, giving the Houston Astros a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals. The slumping Braves lost to Philadelphia, but the Cardinals weren’t able to take advantage of the opening.

Reyes takes NL batting lead, Mets lose (AP)

Chris Heisey never expected to be such a power threat. His defense makes a difference for Cincinnati, too. Heisey hit a go-ahead, three-run homer just moments after his diving catch and the Reds held off the New York Mets 6-5 on Monday night in the opener of their season-ending series. “He had a real big [...]

Shields pitches Rays into wild-card tie (AP)

Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon sat alone in his office, waiting for the reaction of his players gathered around a cluster of televisions in the middle of the clubhouse. The Rays beat the New York Yankees 5-2 on Monday night, then celebrated yet another loss that left the AL wild-card race tied with two games [...]

Red Sox lose again, tied for wild card (AP)

The Boston Red Sox have finally fallen all the way back to pack, and now they’ve got only two games left to make it right. The Red Sox found another way to lose, this time on a broken-bat single and an inside-the-park homer, and their 6-3 defeat against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night dropped [...]

Braves lose again as Phillies win 100th (AP)

The televisions in the Atlanta clubhouse had all been switched off. The Braves didn’t even bother hanging around to watch the team that’s chasing them in the wild-card race. All they cared about was another wrenching loss in their September swoon. Atlanta squandered an early two-run lead against Cliff Lee as the playoff-bound Philadelphia Phillies [...]

Atlanta Falls To Philadelphia 4-2

Another tough loss for Chipper Jones and the Atlanta Braves.

Well, this one hurt. Atlanta jumped out to an early lead but couldn't hold off the Phillies and lost 4-2.

The Braves got the scoring going in the bottom of the first against Philly starter Cliff Lee, as Chipper Jones launched his 18th home run of the season into the left field seats to make it a 1-0 game.

Atlanta plated another run in the second inning, as Matt Diaz doubled and scored on another double from Alex Gonzalez to up the Braves lead to 2-0.

The Phillies finally scratched across a run against Randall Delgado in the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles to Hunter Pence and Ryan Howard and a walk to Shane Victorino loaded the bases with one out. After a Raul Ibanez pop-out, Placido Polanco singled to center, scoring Pence and cutting the lead to 2-1.

The rest after the jump.

Jimmy Rollins tied the game in the fifth inning with a solo home run to right field, and that was the last inning for Delgado.

Delgado pitched very well, working out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning and finished with a line of 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.

Philadelphia took the lead for good in the sixth inning as Shane Victorino tripled off of Cristhian Martinez. Eric O' Flaherty came in to face Ibanez, and Ibanez grounded out, scoring Victorino and making it a 3-2 game.

Ibanez drove in another run in the top of the eighth inning, scoring Victorino again; this time off Jonny Venters to make it a 4-2 game.

The Braves had runners on first and second in the bottom of the eighth, but Chipper Jones grounded into a double play to end the inning. Chipper looked like he hurt his knee during the game, and that will be something to keep an eye on.

Dan Uggla doubled in the bottom of the ninth, but Atlanta couldn't do anything else against Ryan Madson

Cliff Lee pitched six solid innings, giving up five hits, two runs, and no walks while striking out six.

Currently, Houston and St. Louis are tied 4-4 and heading to the ninth inning in Houston. Atlanta's wild card lead is down to 1/2 a game, so let's go Houston!
