Unfortunately, he touched the plate
A night after the Rockies collected around first base to celebrate a walk-off win, St. Louis met midfield to celebrate clinching the NL Central at Coors Field after defeating the Rockies 6-3.
For the second straight start, Ubaldo Jimenez struggled in the first inning. For the second straight time, the Rockies rallied against one of the top starting pitchers in the game.
To start the game, Ubaldo walked Skip Schumaker on 7 pitches and Albert Pujols on six, the latter with an assist to home plate umpire Dan Iassogna. A bloop hit, ground ball and soft ground ball single later, and the Rockies were quickly down 3-0. The bad first inning raised Jimenez' first inning ERA to 5.91. But like last Sunday, Jimenez settled down, allowing just two hits and no runs the next five innings.
Jimenez' rebound helped Colorado mount a comeback against Adam Wainwright. In the third inning, Todd Helton laced a two-out double, one of his three hits on the evening. Troy Tulowitzki followed with a ground ball to third, scoring Helton when Joe Thurston airmailed the throw past first.

The comeback was complete just an inning later when Yorvit Torrealba led off the fourth with a single. Then up strode Brad Hawpe, who in the last 24 hours, was pinch-hit for in the ninth inning and dropped to seventh in the batting order. To the delight of Rockies fans everywhere, he deposited a Wainwright two-seamer into the left-field seats for his 21st home run of the season.
The score would remain tied until the seventh, when Ubaldo hung a slider to Jason LaRue, who was only in the game after an injury to Yadier Molina. LaRue hit it out to left for his second home run of the year and just his fourth RBI.
Ryan Ludwick added a pinch-hit two-run homer in the ninth off Matt Daley for the final score.

have won the kesselschlact.

Run away! It's CORKY MILLER!
This team just refuses to give up the possibility of a .500 season.
That would be Jay Bruce, who went 2 for 3 with two walks, a double and a HR. Not a bad night for him. Sure, Joey Votto continued to play quite well (three doubles and a walk!), so it's close. Laynce Nic also had a walk and a sacrifice fly to go along with his HR, and even CORKY FREAKING MILLER had a double (and a single!).
To make a long story short, the Reds scored a lot of runs. Lehr tried to give up a ton of HRs again, but only allowed two, plus two more runs in the fifth. He was pulled after that, and then Owings, Herrera, Masset, and Burton combined to pitch four shutout innings.
But mainly, there's still college football going on. Clearly, you'd rather discuss that. But one more thing. Check out this FanGraph:

Add to myYahoo! After an embarrassing loss in game 1 of their 3-game series against the New York Mets, the Marlins looked to even up the series on Saturday night. And nobody(not even this blogger) would have thought that Cameron Maybin would have been the hero!!! Add to myYahoo!Game One Hundred Fifty-Four - Cubs 6 Giants 2
WP - Tom Gorzelanny (7-2) LP - Barry Zito (10-13) Save - None
As the cliché goes ... too little too late. Lou Piniella's crew waited too long to play the way most expected they would throughout the season. The Cubs have won six of their last seven games, all on the road and Saturday's win guaranteed them a winning road trip. The Cubs are 6-3 since last Friday in St. Louis with all three losses being one-run defeats.
Tom Gorzelanny put together another solid start. Gorzelanny gave up just one run on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings. The one run allowed by the southpaw was a gift courtesy of miscommunication by the Cubs defense. So Taguchi and Ryan Theriot let a fly ball of the bat of Juan Uribe in the third to fall in for the Giants' lone run until the eighth inning.
Esmailin Caridad was excellent once again out of the Cubs' pen. Caridad gave up one hit and struck out three in two scoreless innings. John Grabow gave up the Giants' second run ... a solo home run to left by Juan Uribe in the eighth.
After the Cubs tacked on in the top of the inning, Carlos Marmol still pitched the ninth in a non-save situation. Marmol retired the Giants in order on eleven pitches, eight for strikes.
The Cubs' offense did their job against Barry Zito and made the veteran lefty work. Zito was chased after only four innings of work after the Cubs plated four runs on six hits with five walks ... two intentional.
Jake Fox drove in the first two runs of the game with a bloop single to right in the third. Fox finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI ... numbers 42 and 43 on the year.
Aramis Ramirez hit his 15th longball of the year in the fourth. Ramirez launched a 1-0 pitch from Barry Zito over the wall in left. In a season full of injuries for the Cubs' third baseman, Ramirez has driven in 64 runs in 79 games. While RBI are truly a team stat, players must come through with runners on base and in limited time, Ramirez has done his job.
So Taguchi doubled and scored a run in three trips to the plate on Saturday. Taguchi followed Ryan Theriot's leadoff single in the third with a double down the left field line. Geovany Soto added two RBI. Soto drove in the Cubs' third run of the game.
Saturday was victory number 81 in a season full of disappointment and drama ... the worst the Chicago Cubs can finish the year at this point is as a .500 team.
