Surging Arizona drops Rockies under .500 (AP)

Micah Owings pitched five effective innings for his first win in more than a year and Miguel Montero hit a three-run homer, helping the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the slumping Colorado Rockies 6-3 on Thursday night. Owings (1-0) bottled up the Rockies’ struggling offense, allowing just four hits and striking out three.

Punchless, Posey-less Giants fall to Marlins 1-0

The Giants did a lot of stumblin', fumblin', and bumblin' Thursday.Hours after learning star catcher Buster Posey could be out for the season, the San Francisco Giants depleted lineup managed just five hits in a 1-0 loss to the visiting Florida Marlins on Thursday.

Anibal Sanchez (4-1) threw his fifth career complete game, while striking out eight with two walks for the Marlins, who recorded their first three-game sweep of the Giants in San Francisco since 1995.

Sanchez has allowed just three runs over his last four starts.

The Giants placed Darren Ford, Mike Fontenot and Posey on the disabled list prior to Thursdays game and called up three players from Triple-A Fresno, including top prospect Brandon Belt. Posey suffered a fractured left ankle in a collision with Scott Cousins in the 12th inning of Wednesdays contest and is out indefinitely.

The Marlins scored their lone run in the sixth when Chris Coghlan doubled and scored on Logan Morrison's single off Ryan Vogelsong (3-1), who allowed eight hits and one walk over eight innings.

San Francisco starter Ryan Vogelsong's 23 inning scoreless streak ended with Coghlan's double. The Giants righty struck out three batters in eight strong innings in his first loss of the season, allowing just the one run on eight hits and a walk.

The Giants had runners on first and second with one out in the first, setting the stage for Huff to do some damage. But he grounded into a double play to end the inning, a familiar theme throughout the day.

Aaron Rowand doubled with one out in the second but was stranded when Miguel Tejada struck out swinging and Eli Whiteside -- filling in for Posey at catcher -- grounded out. Huff, who replaced Posey in the cleanup spot, went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, a double play and a groundout with the tying run at second in the ninth.

Notes:

  • The Giants announced a crowd of 41,472 Thursday, their 21st consecutive sellout to start the season and their 31st straight game at AT&T Park dating back to last season.
  • Promising prospect Brandon Belt was recalled from Triple-A Fresno, one of a series of moves the Giants made before the game. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he expected Belt to play primarily in the outfield.
