Fish Cap: Miami Marlins 6, Los Angeles Dodgers 2

LOS ANGELES, CA - AUGUST 26: Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the Miami Marlins rounds the bases after hitting a solo home run in the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 26, 2012 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

Source: FanGraphs

Attendance: 41,907

Hero Of The Game: Rob Brantly (.221 WPA)

Goat Of The Game: Mike Dunn (-.229 WPA)

Play Of The Game: With a runner on first and nobody out in the top of the fifth inning, catcher Rob Brantly hit a two run home run off of Aaron Harang to give the Marlins a 3-1 lead.

Marlins' third base coach Joe Espada keeps his distance from Giancarlo Stanton after he hits a home run, in fear that he might get hurt, as he did after high fiving a "fired up" Stanton and in turn dislocated his shoulder last year in San Diego. Stanton, who homered seven times during the road trip entering Sunday afternoon's contest against Los Angeles, added another long ball as the Marlins salvaged game three of the series by defeating Aaron Harang and the Dodgers 6-2.

After a web gem by Nick Punto that didn't allow Justin Ruggiano to score from second on a ground ball up the middle in the top of the first, the Dodgers were quick to put a run on the board against Mark Buehrle. Punto walked and Matt Kemp singled with one out, and Adrian Gonzalez, playing in just his second game as a member of the Dodgers, singled to give Los Angeles an early 1-0 lead.

Miami responded in the fourth, as Giancarlo Stanton, who according to ESPN has hit over 5,000 feet worth of home runs on the Marlins' 11 game road trip, crushed a ball to deep center field off of Harang to tie the game. Stanton now has hit 29 long balls this season, just 5 shy of the NL leader, Ryan Braun.

Though he didn't have his best command, Buehrle was able to keep the Marlins in the game until Rob Brantly added to the lead in the fifth. Donovan Solano singled to open the inning, extending his hitting streak to ten games, and Rob Brantly hit his first major league home run, which extended the Marlins' lead to two runs.

Buehrle recorded two outs in the sixth before exiting after giving up a pinch-hit single to Juan Uribe. On the day, Buehrle pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and one run while walking three and striking out four.

Ryan Webb relieved Buehrle and recorded an out, allowing the Marlins to begin the 7th, an inning in which they had an opportunity to add on, ahead two runs.

The Marlins had the bases loaded and one out against Jamey Wright in the 7th, however were unable to add an insurance run.

Mike Dunn entered to pitch the seventh inning and gave up a run on an Andre Ethier RBI single which made it 3-2.

Miami scored a run on a two out error by Hanley Ramirez in the eighth before Heath Bell was summoned from the bullpen to pitch the bottom of the frame. Bell got into some trouble, which resulted in Steve Cishek being called upon to record the inning's final out, which he did successfully.

Jose Reyes and Carlos Lee hit back-to-back solo home runs off of Shawn Tolleson to push the Marlins' lead to four, and Steve Cishek shut the Dodgers down in the bottom of the ninth despite walking and hitting a batter to earn his 11th save of the season.

Five of the Marlins' six runs on Sunday came as a result of a home run.

Miami will head back to Marlins Park to play a two game series against the Washington Nationals that begins on Tuesday. Ricky Nolasco will get the start against Steven Strasburg on Tuesday night.

Going for it

On Sundays, I usually have lunch with some friends before the game at one of the fine Baltimore establishments across the street from Camden Yards.

Before this season, the topic of conversation would have centered around what the Ravens and the other teams the NFL would be doing. However, that topic one came up once that day.

When it did, the general consensus was that, "um, we're not that interested in them now".

"Maybe when the season is over. Or in November."

I said, "I don't have the bandwidth for that now".

I've been hanging out with my group for over nine years now, ever since I decided to purchase season tickets for the Orioles. On Sunday, that was the first football was never really brought up in late August.

With their win last night, the Orioles have matched their win total from last year. I and many, many others didn't give the Birds a shot to compete in baseball.

Now, they have brought back the collective dialogue back to baseball -- rather than football 24x7.

That's good indeed. As well, the playoff invoices that just came in the mail, baseball is completely on my mind.

If the Orioles sweep Toronto - a team they should beat - that would be awesome. However, they have a meat-grinder during the final six weeks of the season. With Oakland, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles (Angels), Detroit all in the wild card case, they have to win as many as they can.

They have the White Sox at home on the docket next week, then have a huge weekend series with the Yankees on the road, along with the Blue Jays again.

It take will probably take 90+ wins to get into the wild card play-in game, and the Orioles can do it despite their patchwork lineup.
