The game was called because of rain with two outs in the top of the seventh. It was foggy and windy to start and then the rain was really coming down hard in the later innings. The game didn’t start well for the Mets or Dillon Gee. He was hit hard for 4 runs in ... Continue Reading

Add to myYahoo! What is a 6-4-3 Double Play? That is a question I get all the time from friends of mine, so much recently that I thought I would explain why announcers will refer to an out in this way. When a team is playing defense, meaning the players are in the field[...]

AT&T Park
Chris Volstad vs Madison Bumgarner
Mostly cloudy, rain. Winds blowing out to center field at 10-15 m.p.h. Game time temperature around 50.
The Marlins are going for the series win tonight. It's Dynamite Night at the park, so if you are going to the game be sure to buy the special tickets so you will get the "Ross is Boss" t-shirt. Also, it is for a good cause.
Chris Volstad is on the mound tonight for the Marlins. Volstad pitched reasonably well in his last start but only when 5 innings because Edwin decided to pinch-hit for him to see if the team could score some runs. It didn't work. As long as Chris keeps the ball down and his sinker is sinking he should do fine. This is his kinds park.
Madison Bumgarner takes his turn in the rotation. Don't let his record fool you, Bumgarner is a heckva lot better than that. The lefty went 8.2 in his start while giving up only 1 run against the Dodgers. He throws a fastball (92 mph), slider, curve and change. His fastball, slider combination has been quite good this season.
The Marlins starting lineup is:
Coghlan, CF
Ramirez, SS
LoMo, LF
Gaby, 1B
Stanton, RF
Buck, C
Helms, 3B
Infante, 2B
Volstad, P
Ichthyomancy is ready for some more MIdnight Baseball.
Best of Luck to You!

As injuries and the losses piled up, the seven game road trip the Braves were on felt like it lasted an eternity. Thankfully, the Braves ended the trip on a high note, sweeping the Pirates in a short two-game series. The struggling offense wasn't great, but improved enough to win both ballgames behind great starting pitching from Atlanta.
Earning the sweep was particularly impressive considering Dan Uggla's season long slump has continued and the duo of Nate McLouth and Jason Heyward are on the disabled list. Add to that that Mike Minor was forced into duty in a spot start in place of Tim Hudson, who skipped a start to heal his back, and it becomes even more impressive.
Due to it being a short series, I'll just list some tidbits from the series instead of the regular the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Braves starting pitching:
Jair Jurrjens- 7.2 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.
Mike Minor- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K.
With an offense that could only be called anemic coming into the series, the Braves needed two good starts in the series and they got that and more. Jurrjens was dominant on Tuesday night, throwing first pitch strikes to 12 of the first 15 batters he faced en route to improving his record to 6-1. Jurrjens also now has the lowest ERA in the majors among qualified starters at 1.56.
Mike Minor got the spot start on Wednesday and did exactly what was asked of him, keeping Atlanta in the game and throwing almost six innings while working out of a couple of jams. A good outing from Minor was needed for both the Braves and for himself. His outing today showed he is Atlanta's best option when they undoubtedly will a spot starter again at some point this season.
Alex Gonzalez:
Gonzalez went 5-9 in the series, giving a big boost to the Braves beleaguered offense while playing his normal great defense. He was charged with one error when he bumped into Dan Uggla at second base when they tried to both catch a ball, but it didn't hurt the Braves.
Tabata has been struggling all year long, but he got things going against the Braves. For the series, he went 4-8 with a stolen base and a walk along with a run scored. He's been much more aggressive on the bases this year, and the Braves managed to take advantage of it in game two of the series. With Eric O' Flaherty on the mound, the Braves picked off Tabata as he tried to steal second.
Braves Bullpen:
6.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's. Not too shabby a line for the Braves bullpen, and outside of a rough inning for O' Flaherty, the bullpen was dominant. Craig Kimbrel looked to be back in top form, throwing back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to earn two saves in the two games of the series. With the offense struggling how it is, the pen needs to be great and it certainly was in Pittsburgh.
Steve Pearce on Wednesday:
Pearce single-handedly kept Pittsburgh in the finale of the series, going 3-5 with 2 RBI's, a run scored, and a homer. His homer came off of Eric O' Flaherty, and credit to him as almost no one has been able to hit EOF all year long.
"Raw Dog" and "Big Damage":
The nicknamed duo both had a huge impact on the series against Pittsburgh. Eric Hinske made a great diving catch in game one, laying out into a full belly flop to catch a ball, sending tremors all over the Steel City. Hinske also did some big damage with his bat, hitting a solo homer in the sixth inning of game two to give the Braves a lead.
Brooks Conrad has a penchant for the dramatic, and the late-inning hero struck again in the 11th inning against the Pirates. Conrad came up as a pinch hitter, Conrad clubbed a two-run homer off of Jeff Karstens to give the Braves a 4-2 lead that would be the final.
Jordan Schafer's Impact:
When Nate McLouth was placed on the disabled list, the embattled former top-prospect Schafer was called up to fill his spot. Schafer started both games in center-field and in the lead-off spot, and played well. He used his great speed to advance from first to home in game one and advanced from second to third on a passed ball in game two. He also laced a double and laid down a fantastic bunt in game two, while playing good defense in center. If Schafer can keep this up, McLouth will have a battle on his hands to get back his starting spot when he gets back.
Up Next:
The Braves head home to start a three-game series against the Reds on Friday.
