Last Dance: Angels 11, A's 3

The A's are a mess, a good rotation with a weak offense in a catastrophically bad park. Today was a nice reminder that the Angels have a shot at second place in the division, and maybe even first if things break well for the Halos. The offense was shockingly good — any time you see Jeff Mathis go 2-for-3 including a three-run jack, someone has been eating their Wheaties. Howie Kendrick went 3-for-4.

The Angels ran out people surnamed Calhoun, Armstrong, Witherspoon, Segura, Heid, Navarro, Melillo, and Bass. Mark Trumbo went 1-for-4, a two-out double in the second that went unrewarded.

It's the regular season, soon enough.

Diamondbacks add 1B Branyan to roster (AP)

Russell Branyan has won a job with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 36-year-old first baseman is hitting .452 (19 for 42) through 18 games in spring training with four home runs, three doubles and 16 RBIs. Branyan was a non-roster invitee to camp and had an opt-out clause that would allow him to seek employment elsewhere [...]

Padres Latos to miss opening day start (AP)

San Diego Padres pitcher Mat Latos has a sore right shoulder, costing him a chance to start on opening day. Hours after he said Latos would miss his final scheduled start of the spring, Padres manager Bud Black announced Friday evening that Tim Stauffer will get the ball when the season opens next Thursday against [...]

Spring Game Thread: Rockies vs Rangers

Look, I don't CARE if we made the World Series, that was the weakest sac fly I've ever seen. You still owe me money from that AB, you promised us a single.

Lineup for today's game:

CF Eric Young, Jr

2B Johnny Herrera

LF Carlos Gonzalez

SS Troy Tulowitzki

1B Todd Helton

3B Jose Lopez

RF Seth Smith

C Chris Iannetta

P Esmil Rogers

Swap Rogers for Ubaldo Jimenez and you might be looking at the Opening Day lineup if Stewart has a setback. Rogers has already secured his rotation spot, which is good news I suppose (you won't have to hear about it on Purple Row Radio anymore). The real challenge for him will be to inspire confidence in us, in Purple Row, because we are undoubtedly the real group of fans that need to be impressed.

If Rogers doesn't impress, I've entrusted Fisher with the Red Phone that dials up Jim Tracy (we debated calling it the Special Phone, but that was just too obvious), and he won't hesitate to call for....uh.... someone else? Greg Reynolds? .....

....

....

Do well, Esmil.

Mike Sweeney to Retire

Not too surprising, but it's sad to see him hang up the cleats.

I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Mike Sweeney and his work in baseball though.

Today's Game, Around the 'Net and Adam Jones
Unplugged...

This afternoon, the Orioles lost 6-5 to the Minnesota Twins; however, the biggest news of the day happened real early in the game as pitcher Brad Bergesen got drilled with a line during the 4th pitch of the game (and didn?t make it past the first batter, Denard Span).

Considering how shaky Bergesen has been throughout March, today?s start was very important to him ? and the team. Right now, the only thing that the tests and X-Rays found were a contusion, but it could have been much, much worse. Who knows if he will be ready for Spring Training, or if things turn out to be serious; however, the Orioles may have dodged a bullet.

The Twins did all their damage in the second inning in which they plated six runs. Reliever Mike Ballard ? who came in for Bergesen ? got crushed thanks to a two-run homer by Delmon Young, and runs driven in by Mike Cuddyer, Matt Tolbert and Tsuyoshi Nishioka. Justin Morneau had an RBI sacrifice-fly.

Although the Orioles got a two-run homer from Adam Jones, and longballs ? solo ? by Jake Fox (his freaking ninth of the Spring) and Nolan Remiold, it was too little, too late for the Orioles.

I have not done this for a good, long while, but here?s a tour around the Orioles interweb ? as James would call Al Gore?s so-called invention (not really?)
