Verlander Ks 14 to earn 10th win (AP)

One day, it’s a no-hitter. Another night, a career high in strikeouts. Right now, Justin Verlander seems capable of something special every time he takes the mound. Verlander struck out a career-high 14 in his latest masterful performance, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-0 on Saturday night.

Cards continue to slump without Pujols (AP)

Since Albert Pujols broke his left wrist, the St. Louis Cardinals are 1-4. Of course, they were struggling before the three-time NL MVP went down. “It’s easy to point to that,” Lance Berkman said after a 6-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday night. “But we’ve got guys who are pretty capable.

Royals Defeat Cubs Behind Greatest 8th Inning
Rally of All Time

If you weren't blessed to see Chris Getz's heroic, tremendous, inspirational GAME WINNING AWESOMEST SINGLE BLAST when it happened live, I weep for you. To see Francoeur cross home plate, all smiles and dangling tools, to see Getz redeemed with such a legitimate moment of glory... what a magical sight.

This splendorous wonder was followed with Joakim Soria striking out the side in the 9th. Wow, I love you, National League.

Astros Still Can't Hit, Lose Again 7-2

Houston Astros' Michael Bourn (21) is tagged out by Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Wade Davis (40) after being caught in a rundown during the first inning of an interleague baseball game Saturday, June 25, 2011, in Houston. (AP Photo/David J. Phillip)

Well, the better team won again tonight and it's really not surprising at all.

As David stated after last night's game, the Rays need to win these games to stay in the middle of a tight race in the AL East. If you watched this game, you probably noticed that our Astros were just out-hustled and outworked by this Tampa squad. You could tell that the Rays wanted this game, and they took care of business with another great pitching performance.

James Shields locked up the Houston bats last night while Wade Davis did his part this evening. Davis, the Tampa right-hander, only surrendered one run in his seven innings of work. He scattered five hits and was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth when Brett Wallace grounded out to first.

Prior to this game, Bud Norris was 1-1 with a 0.86 ERA in his last three starts. He didn't pitch quite as well tonight, allowing three earned runs in only five innings. He was able to strike out five, but it took him 95 pitches to labor through his five innings.

The offense strung together a couple runs on RBI doubles by Hunter Pence and Carlos Lee, but Matt Downs hit into a crucial double play in the eighth to squander a potential big inning.

Another night, another Astros loss. I'm not saying that the Rays are going to complete the sweep tomorrow, but I'm beginning to just expect the worst.
