Game 101: Twins at Cleveland

Livan vs. Cliff LeeWe're getting to the point where writers start talking about "must-win" series. I don't really believe in must-win situations, though, unless a team would be mathematically eliminated by losing. I've seen too many crazy things happen in my life to believe that a somewhat larger deficit is going to become [...]

The Reds have to hold onto a team of the future tag for one more season at least, as they've fallen to a double digit deficit in the Central this season. It's the cruel luck of baseball that the Rockies, who are five games behind Cincinnati, are in a better position to try for the playoffs this year. Not that our hope is any more realistic, we just have the fortune of playing in a division where it seems as though anything's possible.

Of course, once again, to make dreams of another playoff run practical, the Rox need to take advantage of an opportunity to make up ground on the road (they really are on the road this time, I checked) something that they've proven incapable of thus far.

I'm hoping my own presence at the GABP brings a little luck tonight,

Go Rockies!

Anyways, Wandy Rodriguez vs. Manny Parra tonight...  this should actually be a pretty good pitching matchup.  Parra has had a great season going 9-2 with a 3.68 ERA while Wandy is 5-3 with a 3.31 ERA.  Wandy (hands down) has been our best starting pitcher this season(when healthy) and hopes to continue on last outing against the Reds in which he went 6 2/3 innings allowing just 1 earned run with 7 strike outs and no walks.  Parra is coming off an equally impressive performance in which he went 7 2/3 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs with 9 strike outs and 2 walks.

The Astros are catching the Brewers at a bad time... the Brewers have won 8 games in a row and sit just 1 game behind the 1st place Cubs in the NL Central.  Since the Brewers signing of CC Sabathia, they have been wrecking shop in the NL Central.  Since 7/7/08(the day they signed Sabathia) they are 10 - 3(including the current 8 game winning streak).  Sabathia has been a catalyst for the team and looks to give them a great shot at either winning the NL Central or competing heavily with the Cubs/Cardinals for a playoff berth.  Sabathia since joining the Crew (4 games) is 4-0 with a 1.36 ERA striking out 31 while walking just 8.  That's good and all... but you want to know the most impressive stat?  3 straight complete game wins... Amazing.  Sabathia started out the season rocky carrying a 7.76 ERA into May, but has really turned his season around.

The Astros lucked out during this series... no Sabathia.

Marlins come back to beat the Cubs 3-2

Blah, what a up and down game for the Cubs on Friday afternoon as they lost to the Florida Marlins 3-2.  The Cubs allowed a ton of base runners and worked their way out of jams as they held the Marlins to three runs when they probably should have gave up five or six.

We seen Jeff Samardzija make his major league debut in the 7th inning and give up one run that tied the game.  You could tell that Jeff was very nervous out there and was pretty wild.  He over threw a pitch out with a runner stealing and was very wild with his fastball.  He will definately have to show that he can throw an off speed pitch if he wants to be a good pitcher at the major league level.  He did pitch the 8th inning and shut down the Marlins 1-2-3 so hopefully the 7th was just nerves but I stil say he needs a good off speed pitch to go with that fastball.

Bob Howry, yeah he gave up another run… Howry took the loss as he gave up a solo home run to Jeremy Hermida in the 9th inning.  This was like the third or fourth game in a row that Howry has allowed a run to score.  I don’t see how Lou still has confidence in the guy.

With the Cubs blowing the game, Ryan Dempster got the no decision.  He pitched six innings while only giving up two hits and one run.  Dempster did have control issues however as he walked six batters to go along with his six strikeouts.

Geovany Soto and Reed Johnson both hit solo home runs for the Cubs.  That was it for them at the plate however.  They had their chances to score runs but they just didn’t come up with the big hits like they usually do at Wrigley Field.

With the series tied at one game each, the Cubs will send Rich Harden to the mound on Saturday as they try to get back up in the series.

Two All Stars face off tonight as the Reds continue their push toward .500.  Did you know the Reds have the 7th most wins in the NL?  Impressive, I know.  Seriously though, I know a winning season is a lame goal and all, but I need a goal at this point, so even if it is just 82-80, I'm rooting for them to bring home a winning record.  That, and I'd like to see them catch and pass the Cardinals.  They are 6.5 behind the Redbirds right now.  I don't know if they can get 'em, but 3rd place in this division wouldn't be a total failure.

Bronx Banter: Boston Red Sox IV: Deal Or No Deal
Edition

The Yankees' current six-game winning streak has been extremely fruitful. By sweeping the A's and Twins, the Yanks have surged into second place in the Wild Card race and enter this weekend's three-game series against the Red Sox just three games behind both the Sox and the Rays in the AL East. Another sweep would put them in a tie with Boston for second place in the east and the Wild Card lead. A 2-1 series loss, however, would put them four games behind Boston, as many as five games behind the Rays (who play the Royals this weekend), and could even drop them back behind the Twins (who play the Indians). It's thus imperative that the Yankees at the very least take two of three this weekend. The question is: can they do it?
