Jeremy Hermida hit a pinch-hit home run to lead off the ninth inning to help the Florida Marlins to a 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Friday. Justin Miller (3-2) earned the win by getting the final two outs in the eighth inning, and Kevin Gregg earned his 21st save by pitching a perfect [...]

Beating The Dregs: Dodgers 3, Nationals 2

I suppose this means that Nomar's eating his Wheaties, what with his two RBIs; maybe that qualifies as a gift, but given the Nats, perhaps not. The Dodgers really didn't do much until the sixth, and busted through against starter John Lannan, the team's de facto ace in the absence of John Patterson, formerly the team's number one, yet released after injuries in spring training killed his effectiveness; the Rangers picked him up and he got cut from that pitching-deprived team, too.

Anyway, the Dodgers managed two on Nomar's RBI single and a scoring groundout by James Loney, and that was it, pretty much. Chad Billingsley somehow managed to avoid the too-many-pitches disease, and was one out away from finishing the eighth inning when he lost it and Torre called Broxton in to slam the door. He pitched an uneventful ninth to get the Dodgers to within two games under .500; but the Snakes won 10-2 over a hapless Giants team to get them back to .500 and keep pace.

Ramirez out of lineup against Yankees

Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez, nursing a sore right knee, has been scratched from the team’s starting lineup for Friday’s game against the New York Yankees. The left fielder missed Wednesday’s game in Seattle, but manager Terry Francona had said earlier that he hoped Ramirez would be able to return for the start of the Yankees [...]

Game 102, Mariners at Blue Jays

Sorry for the late game thread; then again, it might not be that fun to talk about.

Have at it, though.

Game 104 Open Thread - Rays (59-42) at Royals
(46-57)

“It’s just the big innings that have killed me,” Bannister told the Royals’ official Web site.

And it's just my complete lack of talent and skill that's kept me in the lowest tax bracket as I approach 30. Bad luck!

Brian Bannister (5.49 ERA) versus Edwin Jackson (4.25 ERA) tonight at the K. After a string of rough starts, Bannister's ERA is now the highest it has been since he made his second start as a Royal, back on April 29th, 2007.

Editorial note: I'll be on the road tonight and in Washington this weekend, so, depending on how my schedule breaks down, the overflow threads and post-game posts may be nonexistent or late-coming. The game threads will be on schedule however.

Trade Analysis

So you all know the trade right now: Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte for Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf, Phil Coke and George Kontos. While it's hard to say for sure until a few years from now, I would say the Yankees won this trade. Nady is a good righty bat who will step in and help immediatley. The same goes for Marte, as he gives us the good lefty we have wanted all year, and gives us an excuse to DFA LaTroy Hawkins. Also, these are not rentals. Marte has a $6 million option for next year, and will probably be a type A free agent if the Yankees let him walk. Nady still has two arbitration years left, and could step in as the everyday right fielder next year if Bobby Abreu walks. He also gives us some versatility because he can play first base. Now to the guys we sent away. Tabata is the centerpiece of this deal. He could be great, but he could just as easily be bad. He is nineteen years old, and has some nice tools, but he's almost all projection at this point, and probably wouldn't have helped the big club very soon anyway. Some people are very high on Ross Ohlendorf, but I am not. I think he could be a solid number three starter one day, but I believe that is his ceiling. That's valuable, but the Yankees have a crowded future rotation, which may become more crowded if the Yankees sign CC Sabathia. I see Coke and Kontos as spare parts who may be number five starters or decent middle relievers one day, but could very easily flame out in the minors.

Braves @ Phillies: Game 1

Thus begins the first day and the first game of decision weekend. If we win, we might be buyers; if we lose, we might be sellers; if Mike Hampton actually throws a regulation pitch in a major league baseball game, hell might freeze over..... the suspense is killing me.

Game 102: Twins at Cleveland

Livan vs. Cliff LeeWe're getting to the point where writers start talking about "must-win" series. I don't really believe in must-win situations, though, unless a team would be mathematically eliminated by losing. I've seen too many crazy things happen in my life to believe that a somewhat larger deficit is going to become [...]
