Perez Saves the Day For Lee's 14th

HOLY...

HOLY!!!

I tell you what, for a game that had really no drama from the 3rd inning on, the ninth was sure exciting.

Let's start from the start.

Carlos Gomez's play was awesome and horrific at the same time. I hope he's alright, that didn't look good. You hope for the best when someone is taken off on a stretcher, even if it was just a precaution.

Then Denard Span almost repeating. They were really ripping the ball in the first inning. All night the hits were there.

Kelly Shoppach was the benefactor of Span dropping the ball. Two-Run Double for Shoppach.

That was in addition to TWO sac-flies in one inning. Not often you see that. Grady's was scored from second because of Gomez taking the hit into the wall. Ben Francisco is the benefactor(yes I used that word twice in a matter of seconds). Choo had the other.

Peralta didn't knock any in, but two more hits, including a double. Don't look now but he's up to .27o in average, that's around where you'd expect him.

Grady and Carroll both went 2-4 with a run. Grady had a walk, but Carroll was replaced late by Asdrubal Cabrera(more on that later), in a mysterious way. Who knows whats up there.

Hey Hey Franklin. 2-3 with a walk and the big home run. Great to see him turning it up.

Let me chronical the chances the Tribe Had.

Obviously the first inning, they had the big inning.. The second Gutierrez lead-off with a home run... The third is where it got dicey.

3rd Inning: Peralta leads off with a Double, Choo singles.. Then before you know it, a double play ends it without a run.

4th Innning: With one out, Gutierrez doubles and Grady Walks.. Once again.. No runs.

5th Inning: One Out again, Choo walks and Blake Singles.. You guessed it.. No runs.

6th Inning: A hit with two outs.

7th Inning: With Livan Hernandez STILL In the game, his first 1-2-3 inning.

8th: Two outs, Gutierrez walks and Grady singles. Livan got out of it. Complete game for him. Ridiculous.

They let him off the hook in every single inning but the 7th.

Cliff Lee's game should have never been in doubt.. But obviously it was.

He pitched well again.. 8 strong innings, only two runs off six hits. NO WALKS.. Boy I'm getting used to saying that for him. Struck out 10 again.

But of course... Masa Kobayashi made it interesting.

A single and a two-run jack by Morneau made it a one run game.. Thankfully Wedge had the feeling something was fishy and brought in Rafael Perez before it could get worse. Perez came in with Delmon Young on second and no body out. A shot to Garko at first, a bouncer back to the mound and then..

What looked to be a single up the middle, where the defensive replacement.. Asdrubal Cabrera made a hell of play.

He was not in the middle of the diamond when he threw it.. He was on the shortstop side of the bag when he threw that ball to first. Amazing Amazing play by Drubby. Thank you sir.

Perez even thought it was a hit because he slammed his glove down after he missed it.

Amazing.. thankfully he has his 14th win.. 2.29 ERA.. He's just a bad bad man!

Tomorrow, FAUSTO'S BACK! Horray! Scott Baker who has always pitched well against us opposes.

[BOXSCORE]

Dodger Thoughts: Traffic on the Eights

In defense of my prediction that Andruw Jones would be benched when Juan Pierre returned, I didn't know that Pierre would be back a week before the end of July. So the trial period for Jones that I described isn't over yet. The benching of Jones could still happen by the time I suggested it would.

Yankees Steal Xavier Nady, Damaso Marte From
Pirates

First off, I really like this trade. I think the Yankees got two very good players to boost a club that has already shown that they have what it takes to get the job done this year. This trade makes the Yankees serious AL East contenders. And if for some reason they can't swing the East, they are the front runners in my book to win the wild card.

I will have more on this trade soon, so stay in touch

Bryan Hoch/MLB.Com:

The Yankees moved on Friday to upgrade their club for a push at the postseason, acquiring outfielder Xavier Nady and left-handed reliever Damaso Marte from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for four Minor Leaguers.

The Yankees will part with talented right-field prospect Jose Tabata, plus three pitchers -- right-handers Ross Ohlendorf and George Kontos, plus left-hander Phil Coke.

The deal has not been officially announced, pending the completion of physicals and the exchange of medical paperwork.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi said that they could not speak about trades that had not been completed, but multiple sources have confirmed an agreement. The Pirates have announced a trade of Nady and Marte, but no other particulars.

Nady, enjoying the best season of his seven-year career, could fill the Yankees' need for a veteran right-handed bat in the lineup, as well as provide an additional outfield option. He was pulled from the Pirates' game against the Padres in the first inning at PNC Park while Marte jogged in from the bullpen and hugged his teammates in the dugout.

The 29-year-old Nady was batting .330 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs in 90 games playing right field for Pittsburgh but will likely shift into the left-field mix with New York, with some center field sprinkled in. Earning $3.35 million this season, he is not eligible for free agency until after the 2009 season.

"He was a huge part of the team," said Pittsburgh's Jason Bay. "One of the best clubhouse presences that we had. It's tough to replace guys like that. But this isn't the first trade in baseball that's ever been made. It's part of the game."

New York's order had a need for a hitter like Nady with Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada likely both lost for the season. Marte will slot into the Yankees' bullpen, helping fill the vacancy for a reliable left-handed reliever after serving as the Pirates' closer for the better part of the month.

"We've got them for a reason. Hopefully, they come in here and help us out," shortstop Derek Jeter said. "You know, with the Yankees, our ownership always gives us an opportunity to win. It seems like every year, if we need some good pieces to help us win, they go out and get them. This year is really no different than any other."

The 33-year-old Marte was 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA in 47 appearances for Pittsburgh, allowing 38 hits and 18 earned runs in 46 2/3 innings. He is in the second year of a two-year, $4.7 million deal and could be a free agent after the 2008 season if the Yankees do not pick up a $6 million club option on his contract.

"I think everybody would like to have a left-handed reliever in their bullpen as a choice," Cashman said. "We have a right-handed reliever who gets lefties out in a strong way, which is Edwar Ramirez. In theory, you'd always love to have left-handers, to be honest, but that's not always realistic, as we've seen the last few years. It's tough to find."

White Sox put All-Star Crede on DL and cut Loaiza
(AP)

The Chicago White Sox put third baseman Joe Crede on the disabled list, replaced him with minor leaguer Josh Fields and released pitcher Esteban Loaiza on Friday. Crede was placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to July 22, because of back inflammation. He was hitting .255 with 17 homers and 54 RBIs in 90 games, [...]
