Fish Cap: Miami Marlins 2, New York Mets 3

The 2012 season cannot end soon enough for the Miami Marlins. Rumors continue to fill the air, with the most recent ones claiming that the Marlins' front office won't be shaken up, however manager Ozzie Guillen's job is not safe. Miami's struggles continued in a 3-2 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon.

Ricky Nolasco, who heading into the game was one of baseball's hottest pitchers with a 3-0 record and an ERA below two in his last few starts, got into some trouble early. With one out, Daniel Murphy doubled to center field, and David Wright, who's bat has been cold for most of the series, hit a two run homer to give the Mets an early 2-0 advantage.

Nolasco eventually settled in, and Miami was able to tie the game against Mets starter Chris Young after scoring twice in the fifth.

Rob Brantly and Gil Velazquez both singled to open the frame, and advanced on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Nolasco. Bryan Petersen then hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Brantly to score, and after Gorkys Hernandez walked, Velazquez scored on catcher Kelly Shoppach's error, as he tried to throw out Hernandez who was trying to steal second base.

Nolasco ended up going seven innings, giving up five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out five.

Ramon Ramirez and Manny Acosta kept the Marlins off the board in the seventh and eighth, but Mike Dunn and Heath Bell did the same for the Marlins.

Bobby Parnell didn't allow the Marlins to score in the top of the ninth, however Ryan Webb got into some trouble late, and the Mets capitalized.

Scott Hariston began the inning with a single, and after Lucas Duda struck out, Andres Torres walked. Jordany Valdespin grounded into a fielder's choice, and after Webb intentionally walked Fred Lewis, Ruben Tejada singled to left which lead the Mets to a walk-off victory and a series sweep over the slumping Marlins.

Miami will look to bounce back on Tuesday, as the Marlins head to Atlanta to take on the Braves for three.

Royals Lose 15 - 4 in Odorizzi's Debut,
Eliminated From Playoffs

A photo capturing the last time Jake Odorizzi was to have smiled in his life.

For five innings, everything came up Odorizzi. The Royals led 1 - 0 thanks to a particularly impressive hanging of dong by Adam Moore in his first at-bat as a Royal. Odorizzi worked through the flailing Indians lineup with an encouraging efficiency that at least gave one the impression that he would take great pains to keep his pitch count down. He was far from overpowering, but he seemed to have good command and allowed just three base-runners through the first five innings, allowing two Shin-Soo Choo singles and issuing a walk to Jack Hannahan while striking out three.

His third time through the line-up was an entirely different story. After recording the first out of the sixth by getting Choo to fly out to right center, he left the ball up in the zone to four straight Indians, who tripled, singled, homered, and singled before Ned Yost was forced to gesture to bullpen for relief. Francisely Bueno cleaned up Odorizzi's mess, limiting the damage to three runs.

Unfortunately the Royals bullpen looked positively 2000 in the seventh inning, an inning in which they were called upon to record four outs thanks in part to Alcides Escobar mishandling a ball while the Royals had caught Michael Brantley in a run down. It was actually one of two Royals errors in the inning, with Jeff Francoeur throwing a ball home errantly and being charged with an error as Jason Kipnis came around to score on the overthrow thanks entirely to the ball getting well-past Adam Moore. By the time the seventh was over, the Indians had tagged on an extra five runs, rendering any attempt at a rally that the Royals would mount moot.

The Royals would plate three more runs over the bottom half of the last three innings, but that would be all the hometown nine could muster on their way to eliminating themselves from playoff contention and crushing the collective spirit of the Greater Kansas City Metro Area who were gathered around their radios with baited breath hoping that for just one more day the Royals would be playing a game with meaning.

Given the opportunity to show once again what the Royals had gotten in return for Zack Greinke, Ned Yost called upon Jeremy Jeffress to attempt to throw a second inning of relief, only to watch Jeffress end up being completely unable to do anything right, laboring his way through what ended up being six earned runs charged to Jeffress over the course of the two-thirds of an inning he was able to complete before handing the ball over the Louis Coleman who continued on down the path that the Royals relievers before him had traveled.

All in all, an encouraging game turned into a revolting one in four excruciating innings.

In the long run, it's probably best to condition Odorizzi to expect disappointment.

Giants Work Not Done Yet

The Giants completed phase one of their goal Saturday night at AT&T Park, but it's hardly time to start celebrating just yet.

San Francisco clinched the NL West with their win over San Diego Saturday, and have reserved their spot in the postseason with 10 days still left in the season. Their wins over the last few weeks have been almost identical as they've been getting their vintage starting efforts, and have the offense locked into a pretty good groove. After the outing Ryan Vogelsong had Friday, his first solid outing in 6 weeks, you kind of got the feeling the Giants were going to seal it up this weekend. Madison Bumgarner followed up Vogey's gem with a solid, yet unspectacular outing, but did more than enough on the mound and at the plate to help lead the Giants. Once again, Angel Pagan and Marco Scutaro set the table beautifully at the top of the lineup, and Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt had the hot bats in the middle of the order. Speaking of Belt and Pence, those two are going to be huge entering October as Buster Posey's walk rate is due to sky rocket, and it looks like they're up for the task. This lineup has come a long way over the last few months, and has the ability to put crooked numbers up on the board now. They don't necessarily have to be getting A+ starts every night from their starters, cause that lineup is really carrying their weight.

Now the Giants should have two main goals between now and when games start counting again. First of all, I expect to see Bochy give every regular a few days off before getting them back out there. Although it was a pretty low key celebration, their were still a lot of guys in that clubhouse who will be making their first postseason trip, and the champagne was flowing and some guys may need a day or two to get their feet back under them. However, I'd expect that by the team is back out on the road, they'll shift their focus back to winning, and trying their best to improve their status for home field advantage in October. It looks like the Reds will hold home field throughout for whoever they face, but the Giants still have a shot at overtaking Washington with a strong finish. Either way, I don't want to see Boch start mixing things up too much. Keep guys fresh, but try and keep that same lineup rolling out there together to keep building off what they've done. Sometimes you see teams who clinch early like this take the last few weeks off mentally, and never really recover. It's up to Boch to make sure that doesn't happen, and with his track record, I assume he'll do a pretty good job.

There's still a long way to go before this team and city can really start to celebrate though, and they know it. This has been a fun, unique team to watch come together, and as I've said throughout the second half, it's reminding me more of the 2010 bunch each day. I expect them to be ready for whatever team they wind up facing in the NLDS.
