Mike Francesa has epic outburst over Mets
struggles [Audio]

This 10-minute tirade by the one and only Mike Francesa of WFAN was too good not to post. It might be a good idea first to check out today's Mets-Rockies box score so you know why he's pissed. Check after the jump for my favorite quotes. "The team was[...]

Dellin Betances to the DL with Right Shoulder
Soreness

https://twitter.com/jnorris427/statuses/238719925227753472I assume he's done for year. There's only a couple weeks left in the minor league season and the Yankees have no reason to risk any further damage. Betances ends the season with an ugly 6.44 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) in Double and Triple-A.

Piggy's got back... Rockies complete sweep of
Mets with 1-0 shutout.

NEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 23: Chris Nelson #10 of the Colorado Rockies connects on a eighth inning RBI single against the New York Mets at Citi Field on August 23, 2012 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)

Rex Brothers picked up his second win of the four game series as Tyler Chatwood and the Colorado Rockies bullpen shut down the Mets at Citi Field on Thursday, completing their second four game road sweep of the Mets in as many years.

In the series, Rockies relievers allowed just two runs in their 18 IP, only slightly outperforming the team's starters, who allowed the other three runs in their 18 innings. Chatwood lasted only three innings, struggling with command as he gave up three walks and three hits. He was pulled after just 65 pitches despite keeping the Mets off the board. The decision proved somewhat prudent, as Adam Ottavino, Brothers, Will Harris and Matt Belisle shut down New York the rest of the way, but without an off day until a week from now, it may come back to bite the team later.

The only score of the game came in the eighth inning, when Tyler Colvin led off with a triple and was driven home by Chris Nelson's single. Otherwise, both teams did an effective job of stranding what traffic was allowed on the basepaths, especially Colorado, as New York stranded 12 runners compared to the Rockies five.

The five game win streak matches a season high for Colorado, but with 12 wins in their last 17 games, there's no question that the team is playing its best baseball of the 2012 season right now. The Rockies also guaranteed their first winning road trip since April of 2011, when they had two over .500 trips, one on the swing that took them into Flushing against the Mets, and the other on a trip that included the Cubs at Wrigley, where Colorado will wrap up this current trip with three games starting tomorrow.

Nova To The DL With Shoulder Inflammation

From Marc Carig:

The Yankees placed starting pitcher Ivan Nova on the disabled list today, the team announced, when an MRI exam discovered inflammation in his right rotator cuff.

Nova will not play catch for at least five days. After visiting with team physician Christopher Ahmad in New York, Nova will be prescribed medicine and rest.

Placing Nova on the DL also clears a roster spot for ace lefty CC Sabathia, who is expected to be activated for Friday's series opener against the Indians.
This also allows the struggling Joba Chamberlain to stay on the active roster, which I believe is a mistake. David Phelps will also remain in the rotation until Nova returns.

Maybe The Manager Wasn't The Problem Astros Lose
Again

150637622_extra_large

With bad teams, and this goes back to last season, any success seems to be so temporary. Even with Houston has a lead, it's a balancing act trying to bring that lead home. That's why their early season run scoring in the late innings was so refreshing? Now, it's just the other team that plays pile-on after the lineup has turned over a time or two.

Dallas Keuchel looked okay at first, giving up some long fly balls, but not really getting hurt. Then, after that three-run home run, it looked like he was going to bounce back after just one bad pitch and stay in cruise control.

That fifth inning erased any illusions otherwise.

And, as I was watching that inning unfold, I knew exactly what would happen. With the meeting on the mound, it seemed obvious. When an out chance came up (the grounder Altuve took), this team couldn't even cover first base to get an out.

Talent level is one thing, but this team is also missing fundamental things. They're having communication issues in the field (like when Ben Francisco and Brian Bogusevic ran into each other on a fly ball in the gap). They're doing all the things that bad teams do to lose games.

So, they head to New York, still looking to get interim manager Tony DeFrancesco his first victory as an Astro. Looks like he won't go 30-10 down the stretch and force Houston to keep him. But, it's unfair to heap all this on him. This is a team in disarray and I'm not sure it gets fixed until the offseason.
