How many in 2008

Usually towards the end of the year, we always hear about how many players the Texas Rangers have used overall in any particular season. The Rangers are usually towards the high end of that list. Injuries, callups, usually make for a long list, and you tend to forget the guys who are here so quick that they don't even have time for the proverbial "cup of coffee".

So this year I've decided to keep track of it. This post will get bumped whenever there is a player who is making his first appearance for the Texas Rangers in 2008. I am going to count guys who get called up, but don't play immediately (or sometimes don't play at all), as they will be part of the 25 man roster officially. So here goes. The most recent additions will be on the top of the list. The original opening day 25 man roster is not in any particular order.

Total players in 2008: 52
Total pitchers used in 2008: 28

Astros Over Mets 8-3, Move 1 Game Above .500

Final - 8.23.2008 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R Houston Astros 0140030008 New York Mets 0000100203

Complete Coverage >

Here's your useless stat of the day.  Brandon Backe is 2-0 on the season with a 2.57 ERA in games started after giving up 11 runs in the game before... Backe needs to pitch well for the rest of the season if he wants to be in the rotation next season.  Actually... if the Astros do what they need to do during the off season, Brandon Backe probably shouldn't get a chance to be in the rotation.  I like Backe a lot... I like the fire he brings to the game and I like my pitcher being able to swing the bat... but the stats don't lie, and Backe's career ERA is just below 5...  no way he should be expected to be a top of the rotation pitcher.  Maybe a #5... but that's not ideal.

But that doesn't take away form the nice game he pitched tonight... 7 innings(started the 8th but was pulled after giving up a 2 run home run in the 8th without getting an out) pitched with 5 hits, 1 walk and 4 strike outs earning his 8th win of the season.

Berkman and Tejada both had pretty good nights... Tejada was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI's and Berkman went 3 for 5 with 4 RBI's(including a 3 run jack in the 3rd).

Overall just a well played game.  Newhan contributed with a very slick double play in which he fielded the ball just behind 2nd base and tossed the ball from his glove to Tejada who fired to 1st.  Newhan also hit a home run in the 6th inning to help put the game out of reach.

Joba Has Successful Bullpen Session

Joba had a very successful bullpen session today. He threw 35 pitches off the mound. It was the first time he's thrown off a mound since going on the DL.

"Everything felt good, felt pretty neat," he said. "I cut a couple loose. Nothing tightened up after I let one go."

He will take tomorrow off and have another bullpen session on Monday, where he will throw 45 pitches.

The Yankees have not explained what will happen beyond that, so your guess is as good as mine.

(AP)

Joba Chamberlain threw 35 pitches off the mound Saturday, giving the New York Yankees hope the right-hander will soon recover from the rotator cuff tendinitis that put him on the 15-day disabled list earlier this month. “Everything felt good, felt pretty neat,” he said. “I cut a couple loose.
