Sorry (again) for the lack of updates, but I got a bit of sad news this week, and I haven't been able to get back into gear for this. Fear not, I'll be back within a day or two, but again, sorry for the lack of updates.

Add to myYahoo! The dream of becoming a major league broadcaster - without the cachet of a big-league career behind you - is the subject of my latest piece at SI.com. For the story, I interviewed Russ Langer, announcer for the Dodgers' AAA team in Las Vegas, and Robert Portnoy, who will be taking the mike this season in the Dodgers' former AAA city, Albuquerque.

Add to myYahoo!Day One of SNY's broadcasting as come and gone and, despite early promises from both sides, Cablevision and DirectTV have both failed to reach agreements with SNY (though if any of you actually have Verizon's cable service you'll start getting the network tomorrow). Every few days I'll read and article somewhere about how they're close and negotiations are expected to end soon, yet it just doesn't seem to happen. The rough first day was well documented in the papers; power outages, sound errors, and just normal first-day jitters were all over the place, so I guess we didn't miss much. But we're only 11 days from Opening Day now, and I'm getting a bit worried.
Why am I thinking of this now? Well, I was in New York yesterday and today and had a chance to see SNY for a couple of hours. It wasn't pretty. I only caught small bits of the game between the Mets and Orioles and it was actually pretty good. Gary Cohen was great, as we all expected. But the problem came to me when they went Ron Darling during the SportsNite show to talk about Billy Wagner's injury. Darling seemed flustered, inexperienced. He used the phrase, "here's the problem" three different times in the 45 seconds or so that he was on the air. It reminded me of the terrible cheap news shows that our college station would broadcast just for our campus TVs. Darling was a color commentator for the Nats last season and he must have done an okay job since he got hired by the Mets, but I have to say that the whole experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Granted, it was only a small sampling, but it wasn't a good first impression.
