Justin Verlander struck out A.J. Pierzynski and headed toward the dugout, and his team’s head trainer saved the ball for him. It was his 1,000th strikeout. “I had no idea,” the Detroit ace said. “I’m not really one to follow statistics like that, so I’m glad somebody was paying attention.” Verlander pitched seven impressive innings [...]

The Rockies started out "strong", with Dexter Fowler walking, advancing to 2B on a passed ball by catcher John Buck, advancing to 3B on a scrappy groundout by Johnny Herrera, and then scoring when Troy Tulowitzki reached on an error.
Dexter Fowler singled in the 9th inning through the hole between 1B and 2B to break up the ensuing No-Hitter. Dexter Fowler is the freaking hero of the Colorado Rockies. I take back anything bad I said about him today, because he broke up a no-hitter and scored the only run in the game for Colorado.
I'm writing this from the bar with the Jdub, and our loud obnoxious cheering at the breaking up of said no-hitter was booed by the residing bartender.
This is Mike, co-owner of the Providence Tavern. He got kind of mad with us when we ecstatically cheered for Dexter's bouncing BS single. He called us bad baseball fans. Whatever, we have our pride.
Seriously though, this game was just the perfect storm for a pathetic game. None of the offense could get a single thing going. Carlos Gonzalez continued stinking. Tulo couldn't get anything going. Jhoulys Chacin's strike zone shrunk to the size of a graham cracker while Anibal Sanchez' grew to the size of a Buick. There's only so much blame you can place on the umpore, but good Lord this was a bad game. I'm shocked they didn't rule Dex' hit an error because Mike Stanton kind of bobbled the ball while gathering it in in RF.
Whatever, it's a loss. It's a frustrating loss. We'll move past it, the Rockies are a better team than Anibal Sanchez suggested tonight.

Add to myYahoo! The Mets won their second game in a row behind a really strong start by Mike Pelfrey. Pelf went 7 innings allowing 1 run and lowering his ERA by 2.5 runs. He looked like the Pelf when he was going strong last season, his sinker was working for strikes and he mixed in a couple ... Continue Reading

Add to myYahoo!Florida’s Anibal Sanchez took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before giving up a broken-bat leadoff single to Colorado’s Dexter Fowler, and the Marlins beat the Rockies 4-1 on Friday night. Sanchez (1-1) struck out nine and allowed one unearned run as he bid for his second career no-hitter before settling for a one-hitter.

I'm not big on giving out tons of candy to the kids. I'm not raising a pair of Todd Marinovich's, but I just don't want pass out chocolate and sugar by the basket. A little is fine. I'm have a soft spot for Peanut M&Ms and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, but a basket filled with it? Not so much.
Instead, the Easter Bunny at our house gives out baseball cards and packs of them. The boys usually get a few packs of Topps, maybe an Upper Deck pack, t-shirts, and some chocolate candy.
I'm thinking of getting a few Jumbo Topps packs and maybe even some old-school wax packs this year!

Add to myYahoo!Joe Posnanski offers a great look on players who may have put together solid cases for Cooperstown but were Not Famous Enough. I like the idea in general of alternate Hall of Fames, be it the Baseball Reliquary, Hall of Merit or a Hall of limited Fame that I proposed last year. Lots of people, [...]
