The award, named in honor of Nat ?Sweetwater? Clifton, the first African-American to play for the Knicks, recognizes individuals who have made a significant difference in the lives of others. Each month, a winner is chosen by members of the Knicks front office staff and honored at center court during a Knicks game with a $2,000 donation in his or her name made out to a charity of their choice. The award was given to Girardi for stopping to aid a woman who was in an accident on the Cross County Parkway in Westchester County the night the Yankees clinched the World Series. The Marlins finalized the 40-man roster to get ready for the winter meetings and the Rule 5 draft.
In anticipation of the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 10, the Marlins filled up their 40-man roster on Friday, adding right-handers Jose Ceda, Jay Buente, Brett Sinkbeil and Kris Harvey, as well as outfielder Scott Cousins.
Friday was the deadline to protect players from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft by selecting their contracts. The move ensures none of those players run the risk of being picked up by another team unless they are outrighted at a later date.
Some notable exceptions who were left off the 40-man roster were outfielder John Raynor, catcher Brad Davis and left-hander Graham Taylor...
The Marlins added a couple more players to the roster than I had anticipated, but nothing wrong with that.

David Pinto of Baseball Musings continues on with his Players A to Z, and it is Burke Badenhop's turn.
Players A to Z, Burke Badenhop
Mr. Pinto has some positive things to say about the Hopper, give it a look see.
But in writing about Badenhop, Mr. Pinto reveals a couple of things about himself.
1) He has good taste in cartoons.
2) He doesn't hold a candle to GameFish when it comes to spelling words using Burke Badenhop's name. But then again, who does?

Add to myYahoo!I got a tip from long-time reader Ted Hsieh that Scott Spiezio's Irvine condo is being sold due to default (the default part is a legal notice in the Irvine World News, no link available), with the amount in question $1,344,318.38. The 2,685 sq. ft. condo has a city lights view.

Add to myYahoo! The free agent period starts today and the Orioles based on their results last season need all the help they can get. After 11 losing seasons and finishing in the second division (again), I'd be curious to see what the team does on the open market.
It's safe to assume the Orioles won't get John Lackey (he's going to get paid and go to a contender), nor Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, but they'll have their pick of the second and third tier free agents.
It's widely assumed that Baltimore will try upgrade one of the corners -- first or third, or perhaps both -- plus a veteran arm to compliment Guthrie, Matusz, Tillman or whoever is inserted in the starting rotation in 2010. Of course, let's not forget the bullpen that teetered on awful at times (especially at the end of the season).
Let the games begin. Here are a list of free agents provided from the Baltimore Sun also has their list of prospective players that the team is targeting.
Obviously, I don't have a crystal ball, but a few of the names that the Sun mentioned are Pedro Feliz, Adrian Beltre (he'd be a good glove, but his heyday with the Dodgers are long gone), Carlos Delgado (intriguing, but his age scares me), and guys like Rich Harden and Erik Bedard.
I guess other players I could see the Orioles targeting are Russell Branyan, Chad Tracy, Joe Crede, Ben Sheets (a guy with red flags all over him, but with great upside), or Adam LaRoche (a K king with no discipline at the plate).

Add to myYahoo!By Thom HenningerIt was thought the American League Cy Young vote would be tight, with Zack Greinke and three 19-game winners in the mix, but the National League count proved to be a much closer one. With 10 points separating the top three vote-getters, Giants ace Tim Lincecum repeated as the NL winner in one of [...]

Add to myYahoo! Before the 2009 campaign the CCO asked the Faithful to make predictions on the upcoming season. Needless to say, last year did not end up the way most thought. The Cubs finished behind the Redbirds in the central, missed the playoffs and dealt with one drama after the other for the entire summer.
