10,000 Fans of Marlins

In a game between division leaders in Miami Tuesday night, the Marlins drew 10,696. That's just sad. Right now, Florida is last in aveage home attendance in the majors, and Tampa Bay is last in the American League. I know...

User Issues

The Houston Astros fixed a problem with the yellow home run line in the outfield that caused Soto's automatic home run to be inside the park. This is something software engineers go through all the time. You design a user...

Justin Masterson Gets First MLB Win

Jonathan Papelbon celebrates another Red Sox victory

Jonathan Papelbon celebrates another Red Sox victory (AP Photo)

The Boston Red Sox followed up the hard act of Jon Lester's no hitter with another fabulous effort by a young Red Sox pitcher, this time in the form of Justin Masterson. Masterson had a great night pitching with 6.1 innings and giving up only 1 ER off of 3 hits. Continuing to see these young Sox pitchers go at it like this still amazes me, even though I should be used to it by now. It makes the Red Sox so good, and if arms can stay healthy, stay good for awhile to come. Not your Granddad's Red Sox indeed.

And from all the trials and tribulations that the Red Sox have been through this early in the season with travel, the super flu, and a couple scary losing streaks we find ourselves sitting on this May 21, 2008 with more wins then any other team in the Bigs at 29. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it. The magic and confidence a no-hitter and five game win streak can install in a team sure is grand, and it's a crest I want to keep riding.

Tonight should be very interesting as Bartolo Colon takes a crack at his comeback with his first MLB start of the year, hopefully he's large and in charge as the Sox go for six in a row.

Quote of the day

“”We’re happy with our defense in the outfield,” he replied.
– McLaren, to Baker

Normally, I’d shrug this off — I mean whatever, he’s not going to slag Ibanez publicly. But there’s every reason to believe this is what he actually thinks. Despite the team’s ineptitude at getting outs, they don’t sub out for Ibanez regularly and last year (as pointed out earlier in comments) they would sub for Jose Guillen and not Raul. There’s no evidence at all that they’re just trying to protect his reputation while making accomodations for his near-total immobility.

No, the M’s really are happy with their outfield defense.

They’re happy with a league-worst defense. I’m not.

Tracking the new call-up Vidro

So Clement didn’t work out so well and got sent down for this new guy, Vidro. Over the next 55 plate appearances, assuming he gets that long, I’m going to track how this call-up does compared to the guy he replaced.

So far: Clement, in 55 plate appearances, hit .167/.286/.250
Starting from May 16th, Vidro’s been red-hot, hitting .500/.500/.667 in six plate appearances. Only 49 more to go, but right now, you have to wonder why this kid wasn’t called up the first time.

Those Who Snooze Dont Always Lose

We were walking west along J Street, just past Fire Station 4, when the crowd erupted. Cardinals fans seem to travel with their team, so we assumed that the visiting team had extended its seemingly insurmountable 2-0 lead.I was in a lousy mood before we[...]

UTK Quickies

From today's UTK:

Jake Peavy (15 DXL)
Peavy's trip to the DL is still expected to be a two or three start thing, but other observers aren't sure. One person inside the game thinks that Peavy's motion is the root cause of his injury: "Watch the delivery, the deceleration of the arm as it wraps violently around his rib cage. It is an absolute joke that they allowed him to pitch this way without any concern up to this point. The bang of the elbow joint, the lack of deceleration, lack of rotation, and connection is totally absent in Peavy." I spent about an hour yesterday looking at Peavy's motion and it is violent, but very consistent. The 'repeatable' motion is something all scouts (and pitching coaches) look for, but if they're just repeating a mistake, is that worse? Peavy's injury is still unclear, but reports of fluid around the ligament and that it's not the flexor he injured a few years ago are narrowing the possibilities.

...

Andruw Jones (5 DXL)
The Dodgers are now pushing Jones to have surgery. As well as some torn cartilage in the knee, Jones has a Baker's cyst. The cyst usually develops as a result of the initial problem, like a cartilage tear, and is easily corrected. I'm told that Jones is still resistant to missing time, though with his performance I'm still convinced that the Dodgers are thinking that the time off and rehab time could also be used to try to salvage things. I don't know, however, if the contract is insured. Most insurance has a 90-day period before it kicks in, and Jones' time lost would be less in all but the worst-case scenario. A decision is going to be made soon, however; Joe Torre is making noises like Friday might be the deadline, so watch closely. I'm holding Jones at a low DXL figure for now, but it will jump if he decides to have the surgery, so start planning for that contingency now.

Also: "Gary Bennett hits the DL with plantar fascitis, though the real problem is throwing the ball back to the mound, Mackey Sasser-style. He's met with Steve Sax, who had similar issues as a Dodger at second base."
