Infield Double

Bernie Williams hit a rare infield double. He popped up a pitch a mile high, and as the fielders were looking for the ball, you could see debris blowing all over the field. Neither Delgado nor Lo Duca nor Matsui...

Mets 4, Yankees 2, mid 6

Kelly Stinnett strikes out to lead off the Mets' sixth. Kevin Reese pinch hits for Mike Myers. Glavine hits him, because Tom Glavine is determined not to get through an inning without hitting a batter. Johnny Damon then singles to left. Cliff Floyd makes a nice play holding Damon to a single, and holding Reese at second. It was a well hit ball by Damon, that could have scored a run if Floyd hadn't dived and fielded it perfect. Then Glavine gets out of the inning by forcing Derek Jeter to ground into a double play. Glavine hasn't had his best stuff, but he's only allowed two runs through six, and the Mets keep holding on to the lead.

The Name Game

The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are facing a May 31 deadline to change the team's name. There's an interesting discussion in the article of how it used to be very common to change team nicknames, even from year to year....

Mets 4, Yankees 2, end 5

Tom Glavine leads off the fifth for the Mets. He takes Small to a full count before grounding out to Robinson Cano for the first out. Jose Reyes is 0 for 2, and hasn't looked good against Small so far tonight. Let's see what he can do here. He gets through against Small with a one-out single. Nice hitting, Jose. Reyes on first with second base open, let's see how many pitches it takes for Reyes to take off. Lo Duca up. The Yankees are cautious, pitching out on the first pitch. If you had "Pitch #3" in your Jose Reyes Stolen Base pool, you'd win. He successfully steals on a pitchout. Torre and Cano are claiming he should have been called out. It looks like Cano probably tagged him out, but they're going to give that one to Reyes. Not sure if it's fair, but...it hurts the Yankees, so I wholeheartedly support it.

Lo Duca walks, and now the Mets have two on with one out for Carlos Beltran. He won't face Small, because they're lifting him for Mike Myers. Good move, Torre, bring in your left handed specialist to face a switch hitter. Gee, I wonder if he won't...hit righty against him? Dummy. Well, it worked for him, so maybe he's not a dummy. He gets Beltran to ground out, and it would have been a double play if Beltran weren't fast. Reyes advances to third, not that it matters because Reyes could almost score on any type of hit from Delgado. Beltran picks up the second steal of the inning for the Mets. But Delgado strikes out to end the inning, stranding Reyes and Beltran in scoring position. The Mets try, but can't push another run across, and the Mets retain a two run lead.

Mets 4, Yankees 2, mid 5

Cano is the first leadoff hitter for the Yankees who doesn't have the first name of "Bernie" or "Johnny" to lead off an inning. Unlike the aforementioned players, he does not lead off with a hit, grounding out to Kaz. Bernie Williams now up. He walks, reaching base for the third time tonight. Sam Ryan is talking, but not shown on camera. I feel cheated, so I'll post a picture to make up for it. Melky Cabrera now up.

WOW. What a sweet double play turned by Kaz Matsui to end the inning. Those who complain about Kaz's defense can kiss my ass, that was beautiful. He's been an asset for the Mets in the field so far this year. If only he could turn it on a little bit with a bat. Mets still lead going into the bottom of the fifth.

Mets 4, Yankees 2, end 4

Paul Lo Duca is up, trying to get something going here against Aaron Small in the fourth. There is an ad for a company called "Wagner" behind home plate. The billboard operators are trying to antagonize me, I know it. Lo Duca leads off the Mets' fourth with a single. Beltran singles as well on a 1-2 pitch to put two on for Carlos Delgado. Two nice hits by the Mets, way to start chipping away at Small. BOOM. Delgado says, "Screw this chipping away crap. I'm gonna put the Mets up with one swing." And wouldn't ya know it, he does, massive three run homer to give the Mets the lead. Whoo! Delgado just brings so much to the team with his power. At any time, he's a threat to chip away or erase a lead with one swing, just like he did there.

David Wright says, "Hey, Carlos. Whatever you can do, I can do one better." What a massive, massive shot. Aaron Small's dominance seems a ges ago. What a home run. He hit it almost into the parking lot in right. All of a sudden, without committing an out, the Mets manage to turn a two run defecit into a two run lead. 4-2 Mets, go Mets!

Cliff Floyd finally makes the first Mets out, flying out to left field. It's about time! Nady up. The X-Man gets the Mets' fifth hit of the fourth inning, singling to left. But Kaz continues to struggle by grounding into an inning-ending double play. Mets score four and take their first lead of the game. We've given you a lead, Tommy, now time to turn it up a little bit.

Yankees 2, Mets 0, mid 4

Bernie Williams leads off the fourth. So far, the only two Yankees to lead off an inning have been Johnny Damon and Bernie Williams. That's strange. What the heck? How does that happen? It pops up in the infield, three people are around hte ball, and nobody gets it? The wind makes it difficult, but how does that happen? Bernie actually took second on an infield popup. Ugh. That's terrible. Bernie gets his second double of the game. Melky Cabrera is up, trying to drive that first Yankee run in. He doesn't, grounding out to Tom Glavine for the first out. Man, I still can't believe that pop up turned into a double for Bernie. Seriously, how does that happen? Kelly Stinnett up for the second time. Glavine pitching Stinnett tentatively. Why, he's Kelly Stinnett? He stunk ten years ago in his "prime." Stinnett draws a walk, two on and one out for Small. I'm guessing we see a bunt here. Sure enough, he bunts the two runners over for the second out. Damon up, which means that the Yankees will have a new leadoff hitter for the first time in the game in the fifth. Can the Mets get him to strand the two runners in scoring position?

Well, he got hit. So he doesn't score them, but he doesn't strand them either. Uh oh, Jeter's up. This normally isn't good. Jeter has been cold so far, he almost seems due...I'll be honest, I'm a little worried. Dammit, a ground ball that could have ended the inning gets away from David Wright. It was a hard hop, Brooks Robinson would have had trouble with that one, but it costs the Mets two runs. 2-0 Yankees, Jason Giambi up. He walks, bringing up A-Rod with the bases loaded. Tom Glavine has not had his best stuff all game. This is bad, we needed Glavine's A-game in this game, and he just doesn't have it tonight. He flies out to Cliff Floyd to end the inning. If the Mets had caught that easy pop-up from Bernie, they'd have gotten out of that inning without a run. But they didn't, and they allowed two, and the Yankees draw first blood.

Mets 0, Yankees 0, end 3

Kaz is up. He's been struggling lately, it'd be nice to see him get out of it a little here. He doesn't, instead choosing to pop up to A-Rod for the first out. Glavine up, he's batting .400 for the season. Let's see if he can continue his excellent hitting tonight. He doesn't, dribbling out to Small. Okay, enough requests of Mets hitters, that hasn't worked out so well this inning. Jose Reyes will be the third batter of the inning. He grounds out to Jeter and ends the inning. Small really plowed through the Mets in that inning. Other than the triple to Floyd, he's been pretty dominating. Why do the Mets have a bad habit of making bad pitchers look good (Randy Johnson excluded)? I'm not sure, but it's still scoreless at the end of three.

Mets 0, Yankees 0, mid 3

Johnny Damon leads off the third. He grounds out to Jose Reyes, so for the first time in the game, the leadoff hitter does not get on base. Derek Jeter is up, and you know, I just get the feeling that this crowd isn't booing him enough. Don't they realize he's Derek Jeter? C'mon guys, boo this man! Damn Yankee fans who infiltrate our stadium. Jeter rips a single to left, damn him. That brings in Jason Giambi for his second at-bat. Giambi singles to shallow right, and that's two runners on with one out and A-Rod up. Uh oh. Wait, there's a runner on base, why am I worried? He pops up for the second out, and here's Robinson Cano. He grounds into a force at second on Giambi, and once again, the Mets get the Yankees to strand runners on. It's definitely alarming to see all of these base runners on for the Yankees, but so far it's been nice not to see them score. Still 0-0 going into the Mets' half of the third.

Mets 0, Yankees 0, end 2

Delgado hits a massive foul ball into the green seats. That's crazy, I didn't think anybody could hit one up there, even foul. Delgado strikes out after a nasty slider. Ouch, Small is pitching really, REALLY well. Wright lines out to Giambi for the second out. And then Floyd rocks a ball to right field for a triple! He really rocked that pitch to right, he missed a home run by inches on that one. Runner on third with two outs, can the X-Man get him home? No, Cano gets to Nady's grounder just before it can make it to center, and Cano gets a nice throw over to Giambi to end the inning. A shame that Floyd's rip to right gets wasted, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Still no score after two.
