Rockies 8, Indians 7: Rox Come Back, Then Hold
On, for Victory in Road Trip Opener

On the strength of a big six-run fifth inning, the Rockies delivered rare road tacos to their fans as they held on for a one-run victory over the Indians.

The Rockies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Troy Tulowitzki. However, Cleveland countered with three in the bottom of the inning off of Juan Nicasio on a home run by Travis Hafner. They would tack on one more on a solo blast by Carlos Santana - again, coming against Nicasio, who was certainly not at his best tonight.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the fifth, the Rockies found themselves with two quick outs on the board after consecutive groundouts by Ty Wigginton and Charlie Blackmon. Then, the floodgates opened, beginning with a Chris Iannetta walk and ending with a Wigginton strikeout. Here's what happened in between:

  • Carlos Gonzalez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Grady Sizemore. Chris Iannetta to 2nd.
  • Chris Nelson singles on a line drive to center fielder Grady Sizemore. Chris Iannetta to 3rd. Carlos Gonzalez to 2nd.
  • Todd Helton walks. Chris Iannetta scores. Carlos Gonzalez to 3rd. Chris Nelson to 2nd.
  • Troy Tulowitzki doubles (18) on a ground ball to left fielder Michael Brantley. Carlos Gonzalez scores. Chris Nelson scores. Todd Helton to 3rd.
  • Jason Giambi homers (7) on a fly ball to center field. Todd Helton scores. Troy Tulowitzki scores.
  • Seth Smith doubles (18) on a ground ball to right fielder Shin-Soo Choo.

The Rockies led 7-4 after their half of the inning was complete. The Tribe didn't waste any time getting back in it, as they plated two more runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, both coming on a bloop single by Shin-Soo Choo off of Rex Brothers. Nicasio exited before the hit, but the runs were charged to him. His final line wasn't  pretty, as he lasted just 4.2 innings and six runs on seven hits and two walks - though he did strike out six.

Matt Lindstrom, who was awarded with the win, pitched a scoreless sixth inning. Rafael Betancourt allowed an inherited runner to score in his two-thirds of an inning of work, as Matt Reynolds gave up a base hit to Santana after pitching a very effective inning and a third. However, that came after the Rockies tacked on an insurance run on an errant pick off attempt by Cleveland catcher Lou Marson that allowed Charlie Blackmon, who had reached base via his second walk of the season, to score from second base. The Rox lucked out, as Chris Iannetta would have been out had the throw been half-decent.

Huston Street came on to pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth for his 21st save of the season, despite allowing a couple of hard-hit balls.

Hudson Dominant In Braves Shutout Win Over Jays

Hudson's homer was all the Braves needed tonight.

Tim Hudson pretty much won this game by himself.

Hudson took a one-hit shutout into the ninth inning, outpitching Toronto starter Ricky Romero and even hit his second career home run in a 2-0 Braves victory over the Blue Jays.

His dominant run started in the second inning. Following a one-out single by J.P. Arencibia, Hudson retired 20 straight hitters. He induced 14 groundouts, nine of them to Alex Gonzalez, and struck out eight.

While Hudson stymied the Jays bats, the Braves offense tried to break through against Romero. Four times in the first six innings did the Braves put a runner on second base, but they failed to score each time.

The game was scoreless into the seventh, and that's when Hudson helped himself. With one on and two outs, Hudson crushed...CRUSHED...the first pitch he saw for a two-run home run and Romero knew it when he hit it.

Two hitters reached against Hudson in the ninth, and that's when Craig Kimbrel slammed the door. He struck out the side, two of them swinging, for his 20th save.

Jose Bautista's 24-game reaching base streak came to an end; he was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. Yunel Escobar was 1 for 4 in his return to Atlanta since the 2010 trade.

Giambis HR helps Rockies best Indians (AP)

Jason Giambi’s gigantic three-run homer in Colorado’s six-run fifth inning off Fausto Carmona sent the Rockies to an 8-7 win Monday night over Cleveland, the Indians’ first loss in seven interleague games this season. Giambi’s 440-foot shot — his 422nd career homer — against Carmona (4-9) helped the Rockies win for the fifth time in [...]
