Cano Leads Yanks Past Tigers and Back Into First

Final123456789RHEDetroit2000002105100N.Y. Yankees «00020900x11110WP: P. Hughes (15-5) LP: R. Porcello (5-11)
SV: S. Mitre (1)

Yesterday turned out to be a pretty good day in Yankeeland. Not only did the Yankees beat the Tigers 11-5 in the Bronx to take the four-game series, but Tampa and Boston both lost so the Yankees are once again along at the top of the AL East (and 6.5 up on the Sox).

It was a close game over the first five and a half as both teams could only push across two runs apiece. Detroit started the scoring when Miguel Cabrera hit another homer, a two-run shot off Phil Hughes in the top of the 1st. Those two runs were the only runs Hughes allowed on the day as he settled down after that shaky first to throw six very strong innings.

Tigers starter, Rick Porcello, held the Yankees hitless over the first three, but they would eventually tie the game when they scored two in the bottom of the 4th. Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano singled with one out putting runners on the corners. Nick Swisher followed with an RBI single, and then two batters later Curtis Granderson tied the game with another single.

Two innings later, the Yankees would send 14 men to the plate and break the game open with a nine-run explosion. Cano started the rally with an RBI double, and then ended it with two-run homer, his 24th homer of the season. In between, Jorge Posada drove in a run with a single, another came in on a wild pitch, Austin Kearns picked up a pair with a double, and Derek Jeter also knocked in two with a triple. Six of the Yankees 11 runs were charged to Porcello, with the other five scattered across three relievers.

With the Yankees up by nine and Hughes' innings limit starting to become a factor, there was no need to have him pitch the 7th, so after just 84 pitches Hughes' day was done and he was headed for his 15th win of the year.

Sergio Mitre took care of the final three innings. He did allow three meaningless garbage time runs, but he saved the rest of the pen so he did his job.

Like I mentioned at the start, Tampa lost 4-3 in Oakland and the Sox got spanked 7-2 by the Angels up in Fenway, so the Yanks gained on everyone. They've looked a lot better over the last three games--their first three-game winning streak since July 21-23--and hopefully it's something they build upon as they welcome the last-place Mariners to town for a three-game weekend series. A.J. Burnett faces Felix Hernandez in the opener tomorrow night. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm, and the game will be on YES.

... Oh before I forget, Eduardo Nunez made his MLB debut today, going 0-for-1 and started and turned a couple nice double plays. Those were also two very nice plays by the Yanks in the top of the 4th. Granderson's running play was great, but that catch Tex made was ridiculous, especially when you consider he bobbled and lost control of the ball twice.

Royal Attendance Hits Season Low Thursday Night

The official attendance for Thursday night's Royals-Indians game was just 9,732. A new official low for the 2010 season. The previous low, for a home game, according to the figures listed at Baseball-Reference, was 10,574 (the second home date of the season). The lowest total, for any Royals game, this year, is a 9,299 figure for the May 17 Royals-Orioles game in Baltimore.

9,732 is a really low total for a Major League baseball game, even for a matchup of two bad teams, in August. The Royals had only one home gate under 10,000 in 2009. In 2008 the Royals had no gates that low, and in 2007, it happened just once. In 2006, however, the Royals played seven games before crowds under 10,000. The lowest figure I can find for a Royal home game is a mid 7,000s night back in 1995. (If anyone wants to play around on B-R for awhile and find the smallest Royals crowds ever, I'd love you.)

Although 9,732 is a really low number and will probably be the lowest of the year (though Thursday night is generally a decent going-out night, so maybe not) on it's own we shouldn't be concerned. Generally, the Royals draw decently for a terrible team, and attendance at the K has been pretty consistent over the last decade. The Royals haven't gotten to the point where attendance is really a problem (now granted, it's not an asset either, especially given how low the prices are) which can't be said everywhere. The Royals have probably hit their attendance floor over the last five years, and it's apparently a little higher than in other markets.

At this point, the K is unique in that it's a ballpark that remains subservient in design to the car, which, along with the Royals endless efforts in this department, had made it attractive to suburban families. The metro area may lack a ballpark+bar & restaurant scene in one place, but I think the location and setup of the K continues to benefit the Royals. (Says the guy who lives 2,000 miles away.) A new stadium would have brought in big crowds for exactly one year, but as we've seen recently, it just isn't that big a novelty anymore. When the stadium wave started in the early 1990s, everyone's expectations were completely different.

For 2010, however, I think we can see that just about everyone is getting worn out on the Royals. Summer no longer feels interesting or novel. Instead, everyone's merely hot and ready for fall. We've had enough. Time for school and time for football.

Reds open 3 1/2-game lead in NL Central (AP)

Another win for Cincinnati. Another hero for the Reds. On Thursday night, it was catcher Ramon Hernandez, who with Jay Bruce hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie and Cincinnati beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5. The victory gave the Reds a three-game sweep over the NL West cellar dwellers, and [...]

Lilly Whitewash: Dodgers pitcher shuts out
Rockies, 2-0

Photo

More photos » Chris Carlson - AP

Matt Reynolds looked good in his major league debut, and Troy Tulowitzki's defense will probably get on some highlight reel of some sort, but other than that, there will be not much to recommend this game. The Rockies also had a decent effort by Jorge De La Rosa that was marred by a bad, two run mistake to Reed Johnson and salvaged somewhat by the defensive work of Tulo and others, but the utter absence of the Rockies offense against Ted Lilly made it all moot.

In a running theme for the season, the Rockies allowed another pitcher to hit a career high in strikeouts in a game, with 11 K's tonight.

Clemens Indicted

My MS Paint picture from when this Clemens news first came about, a post in late 2007.It has been a while since we have had some steroid news, nearly 2 years after Roger Clemens testified in front of congress he has been indicted on 6 counts of perjury. These government steroid trials take so long, I wish this was all over but this is far from over.

Let me put on my lawyer pants and break this down for you.

With these charges looming over his head Clemens has a few choices: take a plea bargain, go to trail or flee the country. Since Clemens has been fairly defiant throughout this whole processes I highly doubt he grovel for a plea bargain. So that means we will get to see a trial......in about a year. Clemens will put on a show for the jury with his silky smooth arguments (remember 2008? I am being sarcastic). It is very likely that Clemens will go to jail, my guess if for at least 6 months along with some fines. It all comes down to the jury, which no one can predict.

Here is the link to the full indictment if you are into that sort of thing.

As rally, snap Rays 5-game win streak (AP)

Cliff Pennington hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning, right-hander Trevor Cahill shook off an unusually rough start to record his team-leading 13th win and the Oakland Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 on Thursday night. Cahill, who allowed just one earned run in his previous 33 innings, gave up a pair [...]
