Lou Brock: The MVP Contender

Lou Brock: The MVP Contender Lou Brock hit full stride as a major league baseball player right around 1967.  His game was peaking on all levels - from hitting, to running, and on-base percentage, Brock was becoming a National League force. … Continue reading →

Monday Pebble Report: Led by Anderson, Rockies'
Affiliates Put Up Strong Pitching Efforts Across the Board

AAA Colorado Springs: W 16-4 (33-37,
The Sky Sox spent a good portion of last night's game beating up on a depleted Las Vegas pitching staff that has had its depth robbed by the Blue Jays due to a multitude of injuries at the big league level. Colorado Springs scored 11 runs on 11 hits before 51's starter Yohan Pino was even able to record five outs. Tommy Field, Matt McBride, Chad Tracy, and Brendan Harris led the way with three hits apiece, while Andrew Brown and Tim Wheeler each had two. Jimmy Cesario hit his first homerun of the season, and Brendan Harris went deep as well. The Sky Sox garnered 18 hits overall.

Tyler Chatwood was inefficient during his time on the mound, thus he was unable to get through five full innings. The good news, however, is that he struck out eight batters while walking only three in his 4.2 frames of work. Stephen Dodson earned the W by tossing 2.1 innings of perfect relief.

AA Tulsa: W 6-1 (40-28,
The Drillers have rebounded nicely from a May swoon that saw them nearly fall back to .500 after a scorching start. After clinching the first half title in their division over the weekend, they combined some very solid pitching with just enough hitting (which has been their theme all season) to earn a victory over John Hellweg, who is a very good pitcher that we nearly swiped from the Angels in the Chris Iannetta deal.

Nick Schmidt continues his rise toward the next level, as he worked five innings of one-run ball, surrendering six hits and two walks while striking out four. Over his last ten starts (encompassing just north of 60 IP), Schmidt has struck out 56 batters and walked just eight, on his way to a 2.82 ERA. Joey Williamson, Zach Simons, and Mike Marbry combined for four innings of scoreless relief behind Schmidt.

Kiel Roling had three of Tulsa's seven hits on the day, and he also drove in four runs. Warren Schaeffer and Ben Paulsen each pitched in a double, while Jonathan Herrera went 0-for-3 in his second rehab appearance.

Low-A Asheville: L 2-0 (
The Tourists dropped another close one, as their offense continued a (hopefully) temporary dry spell in Lexington. They were held to just four hits in the game, none of which went for extra bases. Delta Cleary was somewhat of a bright spot, as he singled, walked twice, and stole a base.

Tyler Anderson continued to work his groundball magic on the hill, as despite taking his first loss of the season, he tossed an eight-inning complete game. Anderson allowed two runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out just one batter, but he compiled 18 groundouts compared to just two flyouts. On the season, he is 5-1 with a 3.14 ERA and a 1.95 GO/AO ratio.

Other fun notes: In the seventh inning, Asheville catcher Ryan Casteel and manager Joe Mikulik were ejected from the game by homeplate umpire Doug Del Bello.

More after the jump...

Short-Season A Tri-City: W 3-1 (
Benjamin Hughes, who was the Rockies' 10th round pick last season, enjoyed a superb start to his 2012 campaign, as he went six innings and allowed just one hit - a solo homer to Everett's Christopher Taylor - while walking two and striking out five. Hughes was good in Casper last year, making five starts and striking out better than a batter per inning while walking less than three per nine innings. He's a bit old for the level, but he could be a player to watch. We'll see how that plays out.

Meanwhile, Brook Hart earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief, and William Rankin picked up the save by tossing a perfect ninth while striking out a batter. Catcher Anthony Aguilera paced the offense with two hits out of the ninth spot in the order, while Derek Jones tripled and scored. Charlie Blackmon continued his struggles to start his rehab assignment, as he went 0-for-4 with 3 K's.

Modesto was off yesterday, as the California League is in the midst of their All-Star break, with the game set to be played on Tuesday night. Christian Bergman and Tyler Matzek are the only Nuts on the roster, as Corey Dickerson made the team but obviously won't be in the game due to his promotion to AA. The DSL Rockies had the day off, as well.

The Pioneer League kicks off its 2012 season tonight, and the Grand Junction Rockies will be in action on the road in Ogden, as they'll take on the Raptors (Dodgers).

Astros History: Triples

The most triples any single Astros team has hit in a season is 67. The Astros did it twice, and because they did it twice we'll take a deeper look at both those teams in front of todays 67th game on the 2012 season.

The first year the Astros did it was 1980, coincidentally also the first year the franchise made the postseason. Three Astros were tied for the lied in triples on the team with eight: Enos Cabell, Cesar Cedeno and Rafael Landestoy. Jose Cruz had seven, Craig Reynolds had six. Art Howe, Joe Morgan, Denny Walling and Jeffrey Leonard all had five. Alan Ashby had two and Luis Pujols, Dave Bergman and Joaquin Andujar had one.

The 1980 team finished with a 93-70 record.

The second year the Astros did it was 1984. That year Jose Cruz lead the team with 13, both Bill Doran and Craig Reynolds had 11. Terry Puhl had seven, Phil Garner had six. Kevin Bass and Denny Walling both had five. Enos Cabell and Jerry Mumphrey both had three and Mark Bailey, Dickie Thon and Bill Dawley all had one.

The 1984 team finished with a 80-82 record.

Your 2012 Astros currently have 15 so far this year.
