Royals Humiliate White Sox for 7th Straight
Victory

Kansas City Royals' Salvador Perez (13) congratulates teammate Mike Moustakas (8) after Moustakas drove in a two-run home run during the fifth inning of a baseball game against the Chicago White Sox, Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, in Kansas City, Mo. (AP Photo/Chris Ochsner)

Make it seven. The Royals got a serviceable start from Everett Teaford and another huge offensive night en route to another victory. I almost felt like a Red Sox or Yankees fan tonight: long innings, an endless string of hits, bottom of the order guys contributing with extra base knocks... wow.

  •  The Royals had an absurd eighteen hits on the evening. As three players had three-hit games (Melky, Moose, Perez) and three more managed two-hit games (Gordon, Butler, and Escobar).
  • Moose's power surge continues, as he just got the ball over the wall for his fourth homer.
  • Francoeur sent the game into laugher territory and sent his fans into ecstasies with a three run homer in the eighth.
  • In a somewhat pointless start, Getz tripled.
  • I said above Teaford's start was serviceable, but perhaps that is unkind. He allowed just four hits and  walk, against four strikeouts in six innings. I suppose there is just a small part of me that thinks I could toss five decent innings against this sleepwalking Sox squad.

Astros Fall To Cubs 2-1 To Make It A Historical
Evening

Houston Astros' Jose Altuve sits alone in the dugout after the Chicago Cubs defeated the Houston Astros 2-1 after a baseball game Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, in Chicago. The loss was the 100th this year for the Astros. (AP Photo/Jim Prisching)

Apparently the Astros have decided to get a head start on Spring Training. I thought Friday night was a one time thing but it might be the norm for the final two weeks of the season. As a fan I feel jipped, I didn't invest in this team for them to start playing Spring Training games in September, that's what Spring Training games are for. Sure there are guys you want to evaluate but shoving everyone on the roster into one game isn't going to tell you anything significant.

Besides the new status quo, the Astros joined a majority of other Major League teams in adding 100 loss season to their resume.

Henry Sosa was the starting pitcher on this momentous occasion going 6 innings while allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks. One of those runs and four of those five walks came in the first inning, which is an inning Sosa seems to struggle with. After that inning though he didn't allow a run to score until the fourth inning when he gave up a leadoff home run to Bryan LaHair. Overall a very good outing for Sosa who looks to compete for the fifth starting spot in the rotation next year.

The Astros lone run came on an error by the Cubs in the first inning when a Carlos Lee grounder to third was thrown away allowing Jordan Schafer, who had leadoff the game with a double, to score. The Astros actually had 9 hits and 4 walks on offense but were unable to push the tieing run across the plate. In the 9th inning the Astros had the bases loaded with one out against left handed Sean Marshall. After Jose Altuve struck out for the second out Mills decided to empty his bench and send up Humberto Quintero for Brian Bogusevic.

Angels drop second straight to Orioles (AP)

The Los Angeles Angels haven’t reached panic mode — yet. Although their shaky playoff hopes absorbed another blow Saturday night with a 6-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the Angels know they can’t afford to succumb to self-imposed pressure. “It’s the elephant in the room,” first baseman Mark Trumbo said.

Three games out. Eleven left to play. And the Tampa Bay Rays mean it when they say the next one is the most important of all. “We are definitely playing playoff baseball right now and we’re not even in the playoffs yet,” manager Joe Maddon said Saturday after the Rays beat Boston 4-3 to trim [...]
