Brad Hawpe’s two-run homer was part of Colorado’s three-run ninth inning and the Rockies rallied for a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. Hawpe hit a 1-1 pitch from Matt Capps into the shrubbery beyond the wall in center field wall, scoring Ian Stewart, who led off the inning with a pinch-hit [...]

Add to myYahoo! Finally! Jo-Jo Reyes' 17-game losing streak is finally over, because the Braves are replacing him in the starting rotation with rookie Kris Medlen. Reyes will apparently move to the Braves bullpen, likely replacing James Parr or some as yet unknown player who is going on the DL. We'll see if Jo-Jo can have more luck in the pen, a likely scenario considering his troubles usually come later in games the second or third time through the order.
Kris Medlen gets the call to the majors over the more highly touted Tommy Hanson, but don't let that fool you, Medlen has matched or bested Hanson all year. The 5-foot 10-inch right-hander from California is an impressive 5-and-0 this season with a 0.96 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP. In 37.1 innings pitched he has given up 10 walks and collected 44 strikeouts while only allowing 19 hits and no homeruns.
The Braves gave Reyes every chance to prove himself and seem determined to keep in the majors for some reason. We'll have to see how a demotion to the bullpen affects his confidence.
Congratulations to Kris Medlen!

Add to myYahoo!Rainy Days of Yesteryear....What to Do?
It is raining at the park and the game between the Cubs and the Astros has been postponed until Thursday, July 30.
So does anyone remember back in the day when there was a rain delay the telecast would go to another form of....well baseball? Whether it was This Week in Baseball with Mel Allen, not that TWIB thing they have now or old reruns of "Home Run Derby" that was actually shot at Wrigley Field (West). Nowadays it is some variety of sitcom rerun from the 80's or early 90's. Give me the classic baseball footage any day....not some Fresh Prince of somewhere in Cali.
So with the rain, I thought we could honor Harry Caray and play a "Remember When Name Game"....

Add to myYahoo! The Braves released right handed pitchers Chen-En Hung, Junior Rojas, and Chris Vines, and signed catcher Mike Payne.
Hung, a 21 year old from Taiwan, pitched in 14 games for the GCL Braves last season, compiling a 4-1 record and a 2.30 ERA. Frankly, looking at the rest of his numbers, Hung looked like he had some potential. So it's hard to say why he was released; perhaps he pitched poorly in Spring Training or Extended Spring Training, or perhaps he wasn't able to properly acquire a visa.
Rojas, a 22 year old Venezualn, pitched just 2 games last year for Danville after pitching 7 (6 starts) for the GCL team in 07. For his career, he had a 5-3 record and a 3.88 ERA. My guess would be that he still isn't quite healthy and that's what lead to his release.
Vines, a 24 year old from Alabama, has been around for a while, having been drafted in the 5th round in 2003. After being hurt for parts of 06 and 07, he wasn't quite healthy in 08 either, pitching in 20 games (13 starts) for Myrtle Beach, compiling a 4-1 record and a 3.98 ERA. For his career, Vines had a 23-16 record along with a 4.38 ERA in 80 games (60 starts). The Braves have always thought very highly of him, but he's never been able to shake the injury bug, and it's finally led to his outright release.
Mike Payne is a catcher from North Florida CC. I really don't know anything about him other than he's the son of the late Mike Payne, who pitched 3 games for Atlanta in 1984. I'd guess that the younger Payne will go to Danville this season.

Doors Open, Beds Made........Welcome Home.
The Marlins are set to begin a 10-game home stand and welcome the Dodgers to town.
Volstad is taking the hill for the Fish and is looking to get the team and himself back in the win column.
Stults is a lefty fast ball/change up pitcher whose fast ball is clocked around 90 mph and the change at 80 mph. This isn't normally a good thing. However, he is fly ball pitcher and he has been known to walk a few.
Ichthyomancy is happy be home again.
Best of Luck to You!
