Fish Wrap: Marlins 1, Phillies 8 (Game 1 of 2)

Nice moves, boys. (Photo by Len Redkoles/Getty Images)

When Elih Villanueva dreamt of his Major League debut, the fantasy probably included seven or eight scoreless innings, a dozen plus strikeouts, or possibly a perfect game, after which the team would hoist him onto their shoulders in joyful celebration as confetti fell from the sky.

I'm sure the young pitcher never fantasized about giving up 8 runs on 5 hits and walking 5 in 3 innings. But that was his reality, and the Fish dropped game one of their double header at Citizen's Bank Park.

On yet another miserable losing streak, the Fish were hoping the rookie could keep them in the game, or at the very least, eat some innings to spare the bullpen for the remainder of their series with the Phils.

He didn't. (Maybe he was taking his cue from what we've been seeing from the Marlins rotation recently.)

After the Marlins grabbed a one-run lead in the top of the first on a Logan Morrison home run, Elih gave up doubles to Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard to tie the score.

In the second, the Phillies scored one more to take the lead. Villanueva walked two, and Jimmy Rollins hit an RBI single.

The wheels officially fell off in the third. Elih loaded up the bases on a HBP and two walks, and Wilson Valdez cleared the bases with a triple to make it 5-0. After another walk, Jimmie Rollins hit a 3-run shot to make it 8-1.

The Marlins bullpen held the Phillies scoreless through the remainder of the game, but apparently the eight runs they already had were sufficient, and game one of the double header went to the Philths.

Shaun Marcum

3.5+ K/BB, 1.05 WHIP or lower, 50+ IP (2011)
David Price (Rays)
Dan Haren (Angels)
Cole Hamels (Phillies)
Jered Weaver (Angels)
Justin Verlander (Tigers)
Shaun Marcum (Brewers)

The only pitcher on this list that's a surprise is Shaun Marcum (7-2, 2.68 ERA), who is in his first season with the Brewers.  After missing 2009 with Tommy John surgery, he had a quality 2010 with the Blue Jays (13-8, 3.64 ERA), and was traded in December for a minor league prospect.

He is a big reason with the Brewers are surprisingly in first place in the NL Central right now.  Marcum has also not gone less than 6 innings in any start since his first of the year on April 2nd (4 IP, 3 ER).  There is no reason to think he'll let up either, considering that he's only allowed 69 hits and 23 walks in 90.2 innings, along with 83 SO.
