John Maine and the New York Mets moved quickly to avoid salary arbitration, agreeing Friday to a $3.3 million, one-year contract that gives him a $700,000 raise. Maine is coming off a disappointing season that was cut short by a shoulder injury. The right-hander went 7-6 with a 4.43 ERA last year, making only 15 [...]

Add to myYahoo!Matt Kemp and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed Friday to a $10.95 million, two-year contract. The move means Los Angeles avoids salary arbitration with Kemp, who batted .297 with 26 homers and 101 RBIs last season. Add to myYahoo!Chicago Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly doesn't know when he might be able to pitch following arthroscopic surgery on his pitching shoulder in early November. Speaking Friday at the team's winter convention, Lilly said he has started throwing lightly two-to-three times a week. Lilly has been one of the team's most consistent pitcher over the last [...]

Add to myYahoo!I keep feeling bad for Adam LaRoche, here is Buster Olney's take:
The short-term obligation [Arizona contract] allows LaRoche to go back out on the market next fall, so if he has a strong season, he could put himself in position for the kind of three-year, $30 million deal teams say he was looking for. But to be clear, this is a gamble worth $13 million -- the amount of guaranteed money LaRoche walked away from -- because he'll be competing for dollars against other first basemen who will be on the market next fall, such as Lance Berkman, Carlos Pena, Derrek Lee and Paul Konerko.
It certainly looks like LaRoche played his cards wrong this off-season. He does have an option on his contract with Arizona, so he could wait yet another year before heading back onto the market. If he does go back on the market next year he will face some really stiff competition, but at the same time there will be more first base jobs available, and some teams may be looking for a less costly option than the guys mentioned above.
It will be interesting to watch next off-season.

Add to myYahoo!Alfredo Amezaga is cleared to start running.
Alfredo Amezaga has been cleared to start his running program.
The versatile veteran, who was not tendered an offer by the Marlins in December, is slated to work out for teams next week. After that, he will start entertaining offers.
The Marlins remain interested in Amezaga, but being a free agent, he is exploring all his possibilities.
If Alfredo is good to go, I would love to have him back. Not only is he incredibly versatile as a utility man it would also help keep Bonifacio on the bench. Not to mention that someone needs to lead the salsa dance warmup in the bullpen, and he is the best. The problem is that if he is good to go other clubs know about his defensive versatility and if it turns into a bidding war for his services, the Marlins will lose. But it would be good have him back, he makes the clubhouse a more relaxed place and easily more fun and he can play almost any position.
But whatever happens, Good Luck Alfredo.

Add to myYahoo!Two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum highlighted the list of 128 players who filed for salary arbitration Friday, with many likely to gain enormous raises in the annual process. Lincecum has been one of baseball's best bargains, earning $405,000 from the San Francisco Giants in 2008 and $650,000 last season, when he became [...]

Joe Frisaro reports on Josh Johnson's contract complete with incentives.
Johnson, who reached agreement Thursday on a four-year, $39 million contract, has some attractive bonuses attached to the deal.
If the soon-to-be 26-year-old wins the Cy Young Award, he will collect a $500,000 bonus. An All-Star in 2009, there also is a bonus of $50,000 if he again should reach the Midsummer Classic.
But the big prize on the contract is connected to winning it all.
Should Johnson be the World Series MVP, he would trigger a $1 million bonus.
The breakdown of Johnson's deal is he will make $3.75 million in 2010 and $7.75 million in 2011. In 2012 and 2013, he will receive $13.75 million in each year.
As usual, the contract is back end loaded in order to have the bulk of the contract payable when the Marlins get a new revenue source from the new stadium. Being an All-Star again should be a lock, assuming he remains healthy. The Cy Young is very doable but will be tougher than the All-Star thing since there are some good young pitchers in the NL. The World Series MVP is interesting since every time the Marlins have won the World Series, the MVP has been a pitcher.
In all of the incentive cases, I am sure the front office will be more than happy to cut the check.

Should you want to tryout to be either on of the Mermaids or Manatees the auditions take place this Sunday. Here are the links for the information.
In the case of becoming a Mermaid, you have pretty much missed all of the audition clinics, so my suggestion is grab some pom-pons and head to your nearest hip-hop club and start working on your routine. It could work.
If you are thinking about being a Manatee, just keep doing what you have been doing. It seems the skill level involved isn't quite as high.
But if you tryout, Good Luck!
