Rose says he still wants to manage (AP)

Pete Rose questioned why he hasn’t gotten a second chance from Major League Baseball to get back into the game on Saturday, saying he’d still like to manage. The 70-year-old hits king told an audience that he deserves another chance after acknowledging that he bet on baseball, something he denied for years.

Vogelsong blanks Cubs in rain-shortened win

Vogelsong credited with the CG.Ryan Vogelsong pitched six scoreless innings and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs, 3-0, in a rare Saturday night affair at Wrigley Field that was called after six innings due to rain. It was the first Saturday night game at Wrigley in nine years.

Vogelsong made his fourth start of season, in place of Barry Zito, who is out until mid-June with a foot sprain. He's 3-0 with a 2.86 ERA and a .205 opponents average against and has not given up a run in his last 13.1 innings pitched.

The Giants have won all four games in which Vogelsong has pitched.

San Francisco scored all they would need in the first inning.

With one out, Freddy Sanchez roped a double down the right field line. Two batters later, Buster Posey lined a single to left to plate Sanchez and give the G-men a 1-0 lead.

The defending World Champs scored two more runs in the third. Vogelsong led off the inning with a base hit to raise his batting average to .333 on the year. Aaron Rowand followed with a double into right sending Vogelsong to third with no outs. After two quick outs by Sanchez and Aubrey Huff, Posey drew a walk to load the bases. The Cubs then committed two of their three errors on the day, allowing Vogelsong and Rowand to come home.

The game was delayed after six innings for 40 minutes due to cold, blustery, wet weather. What was left of the announced crowd of 39,706 fans at the Friendly Confines was finally sent home when officials wisely called the game.

The Giants have won 9 of their last 11 games and, coupled with Colorado's 9-7 loss to San Diego, are back in sole possession of first place in the National League West.

Notes:

  • Thirty-two of the Giants' 39 games (82%) this season have been decided by three runs or less, which is most such games in the Majors. San Francisco is 19-14 (.576) in these type of games this year.
  • Miguel Tejada committed two errors at shortstop. Even before the game, Giants manager Bruce Bochy hinted that he would be giving Mark DeRosa a lot more time at third and using Mike Fontenot at shortstop more often. Tejada also went 0-for-3 Saturday and is hitless in his last 11 at bats.

Hawpe haunts Rockies, caps Padres rally (AP)

Brad Hawpe played seven memorable seasons for Colorado. He did his best to make the Rockies forget all about them on Saturday. Hawpe hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to complete a six-run comeback, giving the San Diego Padres a stunning 9-7 victory. “It was fun,” Hawpe said.

Collmenter, Arizona stifle Dodgers 1-0 (AP)

Josh Collmenter pitched two-hit ball over six innings in his first major league start, and a miscommunication on a pickoff throw by pitcher Chad Billingsley led to the only run for the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.
