2012 MLB Power Rankings Week 14

The second-half of the 2012 MLB seasonis officially underway, and my apologies for the rankings being a day late this week. The New York Yankees were the best team in baseball before the All-Star Break and they still are as they took the first two games[...]

Braves Trade Pitcher Todd Redmond To Reds For
Shortstop Paul Janish

The Braves acquire some help at shortstop in Paul Janish.

The Atlanta Braves have acquired backup shortstop Paul Janish from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for pitcher Todd Redmond. Janish is currently playing at triple-A Louisville, and Redmond has been a career minor leaguer, currently playing at triple-A Gwinett.

Janish should be considered purely a backup, as his .237/.332/.391 slash line this year at triple-A tells us. He has major league experience, having spent the last four seasons with the Reds. He's an excellent defender, and should give the Braves a little more bat at the shortstop position than Jack Wilson.

Redmond has been toiling away at triple-A for several years. He got his first call up to the Majors earlier this year, but never appeared in a game. He should be a durable back of the rotation starter or long reliever for a Major League team.

Decent trade by the Braves. They acquire a defense-first shortstop to pair with Wilson, but they trade away some starting pitching depth, though as an option, Redmond was down the list.

Good work by Mark Bowman, the first writer to break the news.

Braves Trade For Paul Janish

David mentioned the trade of Todd Redmond for Paul Janish in the news post. I’m going to expand on both sides a bit more. Redmond deserves a shot to start somewhere, so hopefully he gets that shot in Cincinnati. The move is similar to the early season trade of Juan Francisco for J.J. Hoover. The [...]

The Miami Marlins are looking to get off on the right foot in this second half, and for that, they need to pick up their first win. Standing in their way again are the Washington Nationals, who romped over the Fish 5-1 to open up their four-game series. Tonight, the Fish will throw lefty Mark Buehrle, the team's best pitcher in the first half, up against the Nationals' own lefty sensation, Miami native Gio Gonzalez.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to catch this game, as I will driving to south Florida to visit friends and in anticipation of the Marlins next Social Media Lounge event in a few weeks. So I hope you guys can keep the discussion busy in my absence. At the very least, enjoy Ichthyomancy!

Bold Prediction: Nationals def. Marlins 5-2

Yankees Sign First Round Pick Hensley

From Tim Bontemps:

It took some time, but the Yankees got their man.

Friday ? the final day to sign players taken in last month?s First-Year Player Draft ? the Yankees came to terms with high school right-hander Ty Hensley, the team?s first-round pick and the 30th overall selection in the draft.

Hensley, a hard thrower who was committed to Ole Miss, where he was expected to play every day because of his strong bat, reportedly signed for $1.2 million, saving the Yankees a few hundred thousand dollars on the $1.6 million slot price at that pick.

Those savings allowed them to spend money in later rounds on other players, such as Utah high school right-hander Brady Lail, an 18th-round selection who signed for $225,000.

Hensley, who was ranked No. 23 overall by Baseball America entering the draft, throws a mid-90s fastball to go along with a curve, and was athletic enough to play quarterback at Sante Fe High School in Edmond, Okla., until his senior year, when he gave up the sport to focus on baseball.
I must admit that I have not followed the draft, so I have little to add here. Sorry.

It was also mentioned in the article that overall, the Yankees signed 26 out of the 41 players they drafted, and all of their first 20.

Also, the Mets were unable to ink one of their top picks, second-rounder Teddy Stankiewicz. No relation to this Yankee great.

Astros History: Mark Portugal Is Acquired

December 4, 1988, Bill Wood traded career Minor League player Todd McClure to the Minnesota Twins for Mark Portugal.

Portugal would pitch five wonderful years in Houston, posting a 52-30 record and a 108 ERA+. In Minnesota he had been a below average pitcher, but after coming to Houston he suddenly became above average and I don't mean slightly above average. I mean well above average. Sure his career 108 ERA+ is slightly above average but in three of those five years he posted an ERA+ of at least 124.

Granted the two 120 seasons he had he pitched just over a 100 innings, however, in his best season he pitched over 200 innings and that was thankfully in Houston.

In 1993 Portugal pitched a career high 208 innings and posted a 139 ERA+, also a career high. He made 33 starts that years and posted an 18-4 record. Portugal would be allowed to enter free agency after the 1993 season. The new general manager at the time, Bob Watson, apparently didn't think enough of Portugal to resign him after his career season.

Smart move by Watson, who saw Portugal sign with San Francisco. In the season and a half with the Giants Portugal posted a 99 ERA+. He would have somewhat of a rebound with Cincinnati but never posted numbers as good as he did with Houston.

Overall Portugal was the prototypical average pitcher at the Major League level. Houston was lucky enough to get some above average years from him.
