The Royals will ALWAYS have to overpay for talent. Oh well, at least he appears to have actual talent, and no shortage of leverage. I dig it.

Add to myYahoo!Mariners left-hander Erik Bedard's season is over. Adrian Beltre's might resume. The Mariners announced Friday that arthroscopic surgery on Bedard's pitching shoulder repaired a torn labrum and cleaned up other fraying in the joint. Dr. Lewis Yocum, who performed the surgery on Thursday in Los Angeles, estimated Bedard would be able to throw again in [...]

Add to myYahoo! It sounds like the production of the movie Moneyball has fallen victim to script conflicts. The screen version of the Michael Lewis book was set to star Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, and was to be directed by Steven Soderbergh. (I can't hear/read/type the name Steven Soderbergh without thinking about Matt Damon's impression of Matthew McConaughey.)
I loved the book but that shouldn't really come as a surprise. I mean, after all, it is a book that analyzes baseball using math and economics. Asking me if I liked Moneyball would be like asking Bear Grylls if he liked Into Thin Air (too obvious? I'll try again). That's like asking Michael Phelps if he liked the movie Half-Baked (still not right, one more try). It would be like asking Walt Disney if he liked Encino Man (I give up). Despite my love for the book, I can't really say it would make a good movie. Moneyball has two big problems to overcome in it's translation to the big screen. One, the book is packed with information that would need to be addressed for the movie to make. This characteristic could cause problems with the pace of the movie as it did in DaVinci Code. Two, the movie would require a great deal of actual baseball to be played on screen. The game itself as a focal point doesn't usually work very well. If we're being honest, baseball movies are pretty much at the bottom of the sports movie genre. Roger Angell of the New Yorker had this to say about the failure of baseball on the big screen:
Watching actors taking their Aunt Hattie cuts at the plate, turning the twelve-second double plays (was that slow-mo, or what?), or striking out the side with high-parabola fastballs, we smile unpleasantly in the dark, smug in the knowledge that our sport and its practitioners are beyond imitation. This tingle of superiority isn't particularly satisfying, since we fans ...more than anyone else in the audience ...want the baseball on the screen to work, to sweep us up and make us care about the story, so we can forget how badly these guys on the screen play ball. Most sports movies aren't really about the sport itself. They're about the characters and the hardships they go through to compete. So why does the formula work so much better with sports like football and boxing? Is it really because actors like John C. Reilly are called upon to play big league catchers? I don't get it. But I'll tell you one thing, I can't wait to see Kevin Costner play Josh Hamilton in a movie.

Add to myYahoo! This is David Eckstein's second trip back to the town where he was a World Series MVP in 2006. Lingering resentment remains over his departure. The Padres' second baseman wants to have a chat with Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak to clear the air about soured negotiations following the 2007 season.
