Power-hitting OF/DH Jonny Gomes made his first major-league start in the leadoff spot as manager Joe Maddon rested 3B Akinori Iwamura and chose Gomes for his willingness to take a walk and his .388 on-base percentage against left-handers. The Chicago Cubs brought up left-hander Carmen Pignatiello and recalled infielder/outfielder Jake Fox from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. In corresponding moves, right-hander Sean Gallagher and infielder Eric Patterson were optioned to Iowa. Three of the last four Oriole games have ended in the victor's last at-bat, all to the Yankees' favor. Could more late-inning heroics be in the works? That might be the only way the Yanks get out of this one with a win.
