Long Bunt

Rafael Furcal bunts a ball over the head of Greg Dobbs, drawn in at first base. I'm not sure if that's what he meant to do, but the bunt winds up in the outfield for a single. If he had...

The Buzz That Saved The Dodgers

Too busy to post today, but here’s my take on last night’s game:

When Hiroki Kuroda “buzzed” Shane Victorino, the Dodgers served notice for sure that they would pitch inside.  Kuroda pitched tight all night and when the Dodgers were comfortably in control, he buzzed Victorino.  Manny acted outraged to help fire up the team.  Duncan and Lopes weren’t acting - they are both always ready to kick some butt.  Last night’s game was just what we needed, but the star was Blake DeWitt who opened up the game by clearing the bases with a 3-run triple!  If Jeff Kent doesn’t start against Moyer, I doubt if he starts any game against the Phils.  It was a true team effort - Raffy stepped up like he had to - right out of the chute (glad Joe didn’t listen to those dummies who wanted to bat him 8th) and Kemp and Nomar also got two hits.  Wade and Broxton were stellar and we did excatly what we had to do.

Now that I can think about it, it appears that Chad Billingsley doesn’t have a stomach for pitching inside and knowing that he HAD TO HIT one of the Phillies, I think it threw him off his game.  Someone needs to to talk to this boy and convince him it’s OK to drill a guy once in a while.  Back to this game…

Carlos Pena hits a home run in the top of the ninth to extend the Rays lead to 9-1. It's the second game in a row in which they scored nine runs. That's pretty good for games started by Beckett...

Reminder: Carlos Beltran's 2004 Post-Season Was
Bananas

B.J. Upton hit his fifth post-season homerun early today. Someone on DRB asked how it compared to Carlos Beltran's insane post-season tear, and here's how they stacked up entering today, so minus the homerun:

Beltran 04 NLDS: .455/.500/1.091 4 HRs

Beltran 04 NLCS: .417/.563/.958 4 HRs

Upton 08 ALDS: .278/.316/.889 3 HRs

Upton 08 ALCS: .250/.300/.625 1 HR

So despite Upton having a .889 (!) slugging he doesn't come within .100 points of Beltran's slugging in 2004. That's just ridiculous.

The Win-Eating Tree: Phillies 7, Dodgers 5

The Dodgers had a great opportunity to win this game, but Joe Torre elected to blow things up by handing the ball over to two relievers who have seen perhaps too much work of late, Cory Wade and Jonathan Broxton, each of whom gave up a two-run jack to reverse the Dodgers' fortunes in a handful of heartbeats. I was going to spend some time reviewing that assessment, looking up their pitches from the prior game and seeing whether that was a good gamble, but no; such are my suspicions, anyway.

At this point, I have a soft bed to crawl into, the Times Sunday crossword puzzle to finish, and the knowledge that the Dodgers got farther in one year than they had in the twenty since 1988. That is worth something; the price for that progress has yet to be paid. Their season, all undone now, by an extravagantly paid manager who had a tin ear in one game.
