Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte had a setback in a simulated game Friday and will join the team Saturday in Kansas City for further evaluations. Manager Joe Girardi said Pettitte could only push off at 75 percent in a 50-pitch simulated game at Tampa, Fla. Pettitte has not pitched since July 18 because of a strained [...]

Add to myYahoo!Dodgers manager Joe Torre demoted Jonathan Broxton from the closer’s role on Friday and said the All-Star will have to win back the job. Torre said Hong-Chih Kuo “would be our closer at this time.” Kuo was not available for Friday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves after pitching in back-to-back games, though.

If you would like to send Chris Coghlan your wish for a speedy recovery, you can do that at the following:
The surgery went well, I suppose, but Chis ended up going under the knife instead of the scope. The tear was too large to repair by the scope. So, Chris's recovery has taken on a little more pain. But I'm sure he has a nifty scar to show his friends and family.
Get Well, Chris. We wish you a speedy recovery.

Great American Ball Park
Josh Johnson vs Edinson Volquez
Clear. Winds blowing in from center field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game time temperature around 95.
Ooh, it is Friday the 13th and you know what means: weird, scary stuff can happen. And what would be more weird than the Marlins extending their winning streak to five games. It would be a first for this season.
The Marlins are in OH-IO to take on the Cincinnati Dancing Pigs. The Dancing Pigs will be trying avoid losing their fourth in-a-row at home for the first time this season.
Josh Johnson is on the hill for the Marlins. JJ pitched well in his last outing, but, of course, the bullpen blew the save. JJ is slowly getting back into pre-ASG form and hopefully he will continue on that path tonight. Like all Marlins pitchers in this series, he will need to try and avoid the long ball. The GAP is a bandbox.
Edinson Volquez takes the mound for the Pigs. Volquez will be making his sixth start since coming off the DL for Tommy John surgery. His last two starts showed a lot to promise, but he still has some issues with his control. If you are a student of Volquez you will notice that he is using his curve more often this season than in the past and it has been his most effective pitch.
No, I'm not going to call the Reds the Dancing Pigs all series, that will end after tonight. But I couldn't resist doing it for this game. Don't ask me why.
Ichthyomancy is ready to roll.
Best of Luck to You!

Add to myYahoo! There's a lot of rain in the area, and it curiously seems not to be moving so much as fading out and re-forming. So I'm not sure if we'll be able to get this one in tonight. I sure hope that we can though, because it's a good pitching matchup: Tim Hudson vs. Hiroki Kuroda. I really like Hudson's chances against this punchless Dodgers lineup, which features 5 guys with an ISO of 0.051 or less (Kuroda, Ryan Theriot, Brad Ausmus, Jamey Carroll, and Scott Podsednik*).
* In fairness, Podsednik's ISO including his time with the Royals is a marginally better 0.085.
Tim Hudson's ISO, by the way, is 0.073. So Hudson arguably has more power than half the Dodgers' lineup. Cool.
The Braves' lineup, meanwhile, features 6 guys with ISOs above 0.160 (Brooks Conrad, Brian McCann, Eric Hinske, Jason Heyward, Alex Gonzalez, and Troy Glaus). Rick Ankiel would make that 7 if you include his numbers from Kansas City. And all that's without Chipper Jones or Martin Prado--two more guys with ISOs above 0.160--in the lineup.
This lineup certainly has its flaws right now, but a lack of power is not one of them. Speaking of the lineup, here it is:
1) Infante, 2B
2) Heyward, RF
3) Gonzalez, SS
4) McCann, C
5) Glaus, 1B
6) Hinske, LF
7) Conrad, 3B
8) Ankiel, CF
9) Hudson, SP
Enjoy the game and go Braves!

Add to myYahoo! The blows keep coming this week. The AJC reports that Bobby Cox believes Medlen will have TJ surgery to repair the partial tear in his UCL -- 12 month rehab required.
Not a good week for the Braves.

Near identical FIPs but quite different ways of getting there. Gonzalez strikes out a good number and walks an ungood number. Pavano walks very few and [...]
