Ted Lilly pitched his third consecutive good start at Fenway, and this was the best of them all. He allowed one earned run in seven innings tonight while striking out 10. Over these three starts his ERA is 1.86 with...

The Bees and 51's will grapple one more time to close out this four-game series, one that the 51's lead 2-1. MILB.com Gameday Audio and Gameday are both free you cheapskates, though it seems like they're a little late getting Gameday working. And -- Jered Weaver's on the mound for the Halos, Aaron Sele for the Dodgers.

Don't Expect Any Discounts, Bill

Kelvim's really happy with the latest uptick in the market for starting pitchers:

"You're always aware of the contracts being given to players in your position and even more when free agency is approaching," Los Angeles Angels right-hander Kelvim Escobar says. "Looking at the contracts this past offseason, wow, the pitchers' market really took off, and what better time to be a free agent?"

Dodger Thoughts: Ross No Longer Dressed for Less

Everyone's wondering more than ever about the fate of Cody Ross. Not that one magnificent seven-RBI game does a career make (though it's a heck of a moment), but it's hard to argue that Ross isn't more valuable to the Dodgers than one of the seven men in their bullpen. Yet the Dodgers can't stash him in the minors, because he is out of options.

Astros Pitch to Bonds

Kudos to the Houston Astros for challenging Barry Bonds. In his first two at bats he drove the ball to the wall in right, but each time it was caught. Barry thought they were gone both times and hardly moved...

Cohen says Zambrano sucks; nobody disagrees

I'm sure this will make the papers tomorrow, but Matt Cerrone on MetsBlog is reporting that Gary Cohen, while thinking he was off-air, but the microphones were still on, made some comments about both Willie Randolph and Victor Zambrano that could charitably be referred to as "negative." He accused Willie of downplaying how poorly Zambrano pitched, and also made light of how well Zambrano pitched...

From MetsBlog.com:

Asked if Victor Zambrano fulfilled expectations on the day, Randolph responded, "Well, like I said, I didn't go into the game expecting anything in particular."

Cohen them remarked, "That's an understatement? He just downplays everything."

Darling followed by saying, "Well, what do you expect him to do."

Randolph continued with regards to Zambrano, "Well, he started to labor after the fifth, but the first time out you can't expect him to be on the top of his game."

Cohen then remarked, while laughing, "You can never expect him to be on top of his game, because he never is."

First of all, this is another example of the growing pains going on over at SNY. Cutting the announcer's microphones when they're not on camera is a major part of any television production. Then again, being an experienced, seasoned broadcaster, Gary should have known better than to make comments over mics that may have been hot, especially negative ones. Then again, mistakes happen, and it sounded like Gary's comments were only a human reaction to what Willie was saying during the post-game show.

From a fan perspective...well, I'm not sure anybody will disagree with Cohen on either of his comments. I know few fans who support Victor Zambrano, partially because of how he pitches and partially because of who he was acquired for. Also, Willie seems to get second-guessed a lot as manager, and you know what, he was downplaying how poorly Zambrano pitched, but like Ron Darling said, that's his job. His job is to make sure he has his players' back, and that he only goes to the press when a player is clearly not busting his ass. Zambrano's problem isn't really a lack of effort, it's a lack of talent.

In the end, I don't think there will be anything severe coming out of this. Willie will "downplay" the situation, (which, again, is his job) and Gary will issue a short apology before tomorrow's game, and that will be the end of it. Maybe Willie doesn't show up for the post-game show one night too, but that's as far as it goes.
