Did I miss something or did Yovani Gallardo morph into a mix of Kevin Brown and Greg Maddux? That's the only way you can explain how he took all the power out of those sweet, sweet blue and gold uniforms?
Gallardo was once again brilliant against the Astros, winning for the 13th time in his career against Houston and running his streak of consecutive wins against the Astros up to 10. He struck out eight, didn't let anyone put any loft on the ball and generally shut down a resurgent (okay, let's maybe not go that far) offense.
But, Houston was still battling there in the final innings, ready to take another miracle win from this Brewers bullpen. They just came up short against Kameron Loe in the ninth. If only they could have gotten Steve Pearce up to bat...
The real story for me was how well Jordan Lyles looked. The four runs he allowed certainly make his start look just as pedestrian as he's been this season. But, the combination of strikeouts and a huge number of ground ball outs really upped the impressiveness level for Lyles. That's two straight starts he's pitched seven innings and looked pretty good doing it.
His defense didn't do him any favors, but that's sort of the case right now with this team. It's not a great defensive squad, but they're good enough. The important thing for Lyles is to continue to pitch deep into games, keep the ball on the ground and keep getting those strikeouts. That shows me a lot about his development so far.
Now, Houston will go on to Chicago in another battle of the basement dwellers. Maybe they can win two straight series? Can they bring the blue and gold uniforms there too?
