Baltimore takes the series, Roberts coming back

The Orioles walked-off with back-to-back extra-inning wins against the Philadelphia Phillies before sell-out, mostly Phillies, crowds.

Yesterday beleaguered Orioles starter Tommy hunter came through with a workman-like seven inning no-decision before Adam Jones silenced the legion of Phillies fans with a two-run homer in the bottom of the twelfth. Today, Jason Hammel overcame a near disastrous second inning to go six solid, giving up four and allowing the Orioles to tie the game up. Matt Wieters sent the Orioles fans into a fury with a RBI double in the bottom of the tenth. The Orioles take the series, return to a more comfortable eight games over .500 and keep pace in the AL East remaining a game behind the Rays and half a game behind the Yankees.

The AL East seems to be shaking out a little the past week. The Orioles, Yankees and Rays are bunched at the top of the division separated by one game with the Jays and Red Sox losing ground as they continue underwhelming Springs. Meanwhile, the Orioles seem to have shaken off the rough patch and six-game losing streak winning five of their last eight and each of their last two series. Three of the five wins have come in extra-innings and the Orioles are getting used to these contests. The Birds are 34-26 on the year but when you total up the innings the team has actually played in THREE FULL EXTRA GAMES, plus an inning, in that span of 50 games.

One begins to wonder what toll that number of extra games has been taking on the team and if that had any hand in the recent spotty play of many key players. The schedule in May certainly did not help matters. Thankfully this month the Orioles get many off days to hopefully recover from the overtime they have been putting on the clock.

Tuesday brings another huge day in the story of the 2012 Baltimore Orioles. Reports are state that it is extremely likely that Brian Roberts will be activated and start for the Orioles against the Pirates. Roberts has not played in a game since May 16th of 2011. Roberts has spent the interm recovering from extreme post-concussion syndrome symptoms and many people that follow the Orioles, myself included, thought Roberts was done. I genuinely did not think that I would ever see Roberts suit up for the Orioles again so Tuesday night will prove to be a very special night for me and all Orioles fans.

This Day In Marlins History: Happy Birthday Jose
Reyes

You should be clapping, Jose. It's your birthday! Mandatory Credit: Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

In Fish Stripes' continued attempt to remind people of the past of the Florida Marlins along with the present and future of theMiami Marlins, we bring you a new feature published three or so times a week entitledThis Day In Marlins History! The concept itself is very simple: whenever we publish this, we find an interesting fact or tidbit related to the Florida / Miami Marlins and write a little bit about that event.

Today, on June 11, 1983, your Miami Marlins starting shortstop, Jose Reyes, was born!

Of course, for the longest time, this was not something the Marlins celebrated, as Reyes was a member of the New York Mets back then. As a Met, Reyes has faced the Marlins plenty of times in his career. He has 547 career PA against the Fish, third among all the teams in baseball that he has faced behind only the Phillies and Braves. In that time, the Fish had done a good job against him, holding to a .262/.315/.405 slash line that was 15 percent worse than his career OPS.

Then of course, Reyes eventually hit free agency following a career-best season, and there were many discussions about how much he could get in the market and what team would be willing to pay a large sum for his services. It turned out it was the Marlins, who signed him to a six-year, $104 million deal.

Reyes's signing met a lot of excitement, but his early season did not go well. He hit just .220/.293/.341 in the month of April, but it generally seemed like Marlins fans were not as concerned about Reyes as they were about many of their other, younger pieces. With the entire team save Omar Infante playing poorly, fans were relatively quiet about Reyes's struggles, and with good reason. Reyes was struggling with some problems on balls in play, but his strikeouts and walks were right in line with his career work.

Sure enough, the folks who were not worried about Reyes, myself included, were about right, because Reyes has done really well since then. In May, he was a part of the offensive bounceback, batting .297/.398/.339 (.336 wOBA). He is continuing to get back into a usual swing of things. Reyes had a 15-game hitting streak going in between late May and early June, and since the start of May he has hit a more Reyes-like .315/.395/.393 (.361 wOBA). Since May, he has been exactly what the Marlins expected to see, and there is no reason why the team would regret having him on board in terms of on-field performance. In addition, off the field, Reyes played a hand in helping Hanley Ramirez's successful transition to third base, if only because Reyes was so supportive and friendly with Ramirez that the two became best friends over the offseason.

Yes, today, in 1983, Jose Reyes was born. Twenty-nine years later, he is the starting shortstop for the Miami Marlins, and the team could not be happier. Happy birthday Jose! LO VISTE!

Schlosser Hurls A Gem, Drury Has Big Day, And
Cunnihngham Extends Hitting Streak To 10 Game In Sunday's Atlanta Braves Minor League Action

Gus Schlosser pitched a gem, Brandon Drury had a 3 hit day, Todd Cunningham extended his hitting streak to 10 games, and Rafael Briceno got absolutely shelled.

Gwinnett Braves 1, Pawtucket Red Sox 6

  • Ernesto Mejia RF 1-3, HR (11), RBI, BB, .314 AVG
  • Eric Junge 6.2 IP, 6 ER, 8 H, 3 BB, 6 K, 4.54 ERA
  • Jaye Chapman 1.1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 2.63 ERA

Ernesto Mejia's 11th homer of the year accounted for the lone G-Braves run today. It was his second straight game with a homer, and in his last 10 games he's hitting .314 with a .985 OPS, 3 homers, and 4 RBI. After pitching quality starts his last two times out, Eric Junge was roughed up today, allowing 6 earned runs in 6.2 innings, picking up his sixth loss of the year. Jay Chapman made his third straight scoreless appearance, and he's struck out 4 in 4 innings over that span.

Yohan Flande will face Daniel Bard Monday night.

Mississippi Braves 2, Tennessee Smokies 4

Todd Cunningham extended his hitting streak to 10 game, and during that span he's hit .385 with a .846 OPS, 3 doubles, 6 RBI, and 2 steals. Tim Smith snapped a 0-6 skid with a 2 hit day. Sean Gilmartin had one of his least effective starts of the year, allowing 4 earned runs in just 5 innings of work, after allowing just 1 earned run in 8 innings his last time out. Billy Bullock made his fourth straight appearance without allowing an earned run, and over that span he's stuck out 9, walked 4 and given up 2 hits in 5.2 innings.

David Hale will take on Cubs top prospect Trey McNutt tomorrow evening.

Lynchburg Hillcats 5, Frederick Keys 0

  • Myke Jones CF 1-2, 3 BB, .238 AVG
  • Nick Ahmed SS 1-5, HR (4), RBI, SB (20), .253 AVG
  • Tommy La Stella 2B 2-5, 2B, RBI, .263 AVG
  • Adam Milligan DH 1-4, HR (3), RBI, .262 AVG
  • Chris Garcia 1B 1-2, 2 BB, .320 AVG
  • Braeden Schlehuber C 2-4, 2B, .305 AVG
  • Matt Weaver LF 2-4, 3B, .213 AVG
  • Gus Schlosser 8 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 5 K, W (7), 3.80 ERA
  • Chasen Shreve 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K, 1.71 ERA

Gus Schlosser had an outstanding start, striking out 5 while allowing just 3 hits and no walks over 8 shutout innings, picking up his seventh win of the year to tie him with teammate JR Graham for the league lead. It was a nice comeback after he had allowed 8 earned runs in 11 innings over his last 2 starts. Chasen Shreve made his seventh straight scoreless appearance, and he's struck out 11 and walked 4 in 10.2 innings during that stretch. Myke Jones did a great job leading off today, reaching base 4 times, and in his last 3 games he's gone 3-7 with 5 walks. Tommy La Stella had a 2 hit day, and he's gone 3-8 in his last 2 games. Braeden Schlehuber had his second straight 2 hit game, and in his last 8 games he's gone 12-26 with 3 doubles, a triple, a homer, and 5 RBI. Matt Weaver also had a 2 hit day, snapping a 0-8 skid. Nick Ahmed hit his fourth homer of the year and stole his league leading 20th base. Chris Garcia reached base 3 times, and in his last 2 games he's gone 2-4 with 3 walks.

The Hillcats begin a series against the Carolina Mudcats on Monday, with Dimasther Delgado scheduled to start the opener.

Rome Braves 7, Augusta Green Jackets 14

  • Sergio Miranda 2B 3-4, RBI, BB, .239 AVG
  • Kyle Kubitza 3B 0-2, 3 BB, 2 E (8, 9), .251 AVG
  • Tony Mueller CF 1-2, RBI, .266 AVG
  • Brandon Drury 1B 3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, .186 AVG
  • Rafael Briceno 5 IP, 11 ER, 13 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 7.00 ERA

Brandon Drury had a great day, driving in a pair of run while rapping out 3 hits, including 2 doubles. He's struggled mightily for most of the year, but has gotten off to a good start in June, hitting .286 with a .810 OPS in 8 games. Kyle Kubitza had some trouble in the field, committing a pair of throwing errors, but he showed off his on base skils, working 3 walks, giving him 9 walks in his last 10 games, good for a .413 OBP. Tony Mueller extended his hitting streak to 6 games, going 11-21 with 4 RBI during that stretch. It looked like Rafael Briceno was finally turning his season around after allowing just 2 earned runs over 11 innings in his last 2 starts, but he was pounded tonight, allowing 11 earned runs in 5 innings, upping his season ERA to an even 7.00 and his WHIP to 1.75. He's only allowing 2.6 BB/9, but he's been very hittable, giving up 13.1 hits per 9 innings.

The teams head to Augusta tomorrow to continue the series, with David Filak scheduled to start for Rome.

DSL Braves - Off
