Sanchez says he'll be ready at start of spring
training

San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez said he will be available for the entire Cactus League schedule despite statements from the front office that he's expected to miss the first half of the schedule following left shoulder surgery in December.

Many observers may still think of Sanchez as a former batting champ, but the most notable thing about his career is his consistency. Aside from one great year (2006) and one poor one (2008) -- both of which appear to be statistical flukes -- Sanchez has essentially turned in the same performance every season in his career. He is an aggressive hitter who makes plenty of contact and hits a fair share of slashing line drives. The result is almost always a batting average in the vicinity of .300 with a homer count just shy of double digits.

Buckley only gets a year for killing Giants fan

Taylor Buckley -- the San Carlos man who sucker-punched 18-year old Anthony Giraudo after a San Francisco Giants game three years ago -- is only getting a year in jail after killing Giraudo outside AT&T Park.

I haven't heard how Giraudo's family feels about Buckley's sentence, but if it were my son, I'd be pretty pissed.

Anthony GiraudoIt didn't help that prosecutors only charged Buckley with involuntary manslaughter (saying he did not intend to kill Giraudo). But that's like saying, "Oh, when I had sex with my girlfriend, I didn't mean to knock her up." What ever happened to consequences, man?

In case you don't remember the whole story, Buckley (who went to Belmont High) and Giraudo (from Redwood City) began arguing with each other at around 9:45 p.m. after a Giants-Phillies game on May 9, 2008. Giraudo was sticking up for a female friend who was being harassed by one of Buckley's friends. As Giraudo began to walk away, Buckley suddenly sucker-punched the 18-year old in the side of the face. Giraudo fell and hit his head on the concrete and died in a hospital the next day.

Reports at the time stated that after the punch connected, Buckley smiled and puffed his chest then started dancing around, yelling "Knockout! Knockout!"

It's a tragic case on both sides, to be sure. But it must be difficult for Giraudo's family to know that Buckley's actions -- and Giraudo's life -- were only worthy of a year in the can.
