ChiSox nail Twins Hardy at home to win (AP)

A shift in strategy worked out well for the Chicago White Sox. J.J. Hardy was nailed at the plate for the final out on an unorthodox relay, and the White Sox held off the Minnesota Twins 5-4 Sunday to end a four-game losing streak. Hardy singled with two outs against Bobby Jenks and took off [...]

Texas Stadium Demolition and Implosion

I just received an email this morning from the Cowboys trying squeeze as much out of that stadium as they could. They were selling parts of the locker room and pieces of concrete. I have stadium seats already, but the locker room floor pieces sounds interesting too.

So long Texas Stadium.

Because I'm in the process of finishing up a lineup optimization post, let's just analyze this...masterful...lineup by OBP/SLG (values are the average of CHONE and ZiPs projections for the batters):
  1. .333/.357
  2. .339/.393
  3. .328/.375
  4. .345/.509
  5. .305/.376
  6. .298/.399
  7. .316/.371
  8. .323/.392
  9. Something not good
I'll give Mills the caveat that there is not a lot to work with here, but c'mon. Are bench guys really just going to jump in the place of the person they replace all season with no thought as to whether they actually fit there? This hurts my head. Not just because I don't like how Mills is handling the bench players, but those numbers are awful. Roy Halladay is just licking his chops, duly wondering if he'll throw a no hitter today...or maybe even a perfect game...
...Going with that thought: maybe Mills is just raising the white flag.

Former San Francisco Giants outfielder Marvin Benard has admitted he used steroids during the team’s 2002 World Series season. The 40-year-old Benard acknowledged his steroid use to The Associated Press on Sunday, when he was in the Bay Area for a reunion of the Giants’ 2000 NL West champion team.

Millwood Solid on the Mound; O's Lose Again to
Cap Off a Bad Week...

For the Orioles, it?s been well .. a bad week. Aside from the Sunday curse continuing, the Opening week ended with a disappointing thud as the Blue Jays won this afternoon, 5-2, to complete the weekend sweep.

Until the seventh inning, all was good on a nice, sunny day in Baltimore. Ace Kevin Millwood, who was making his first start at Camden Yards as a member of the Orioles, showed why the top brass thought so highly of him to make a trade with Texas in the off-season.

For 7 2/3 innings, Millwood (0-1) was the man on the mound and held a 2-1 lead for Baltimore; however, back-to-back homers by Toronto?s Jose Bautista (a 2-run shot) and Alex Gonzalez (solo) did the Orioles in.

The Jays added an insurance runs and put the nail in the coffin on Sunday as Edwin Encarnacion hit a solo homer to give the Jays 5-2 lead.

Kevin Gregg pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the year.

Baltimore got on the board in the first inning, 2-0, thanks to an RBI-double by Miguel Tejada and a Luke Scott RBI-groundout. After that, the Orioles were handcuffed by the Jays and would not score after that.

Despite getting nine hits, the Orioles were once again stymied on the offensive front, going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Shawn Marcum ? who started the game for Toronto ? earned the no-decision, and Casey Janssen (who pitched in relief during the 7th inning) got the win. He is 3-0 on the season.

Nationals rough up Santana, top Mets 5-2 (AP)

Josh Willingham saw the ball carom off the outfield fence and put his head down, charging hard around first base. He kept going past second and was waved around third, plowing into Mets catcher Rob Barajas at home plate. It sure was a lot of wasted effort. Willingham’s bases-loaded drive off Johan Santana was initially [...]
