Posada catches for first time this year (AP)

Five-time All-Star catcher Jorge Posada went behind the plate for the first time since the final game of last season after New York Yankees starter Russell Martin was injured Saturday night against the Los Angeles Angels. Posada, limited by the Yankees to first base and designated hitter duty all year, replaced Martin in the third [...]

Martin Leaves With Hand Contusion, Posada
Catching

The Yankees stretch of seemingly injury after injury after injury continued tonight in Anaheim, when catcher Russell Martin left the game with a right hand contusion after taking a foul tip off his right thumb. He is currently listed as day-to-day.

And the guy who replaced Martin behind the plate is none other than Jorge Posada, catching for the first time since Game 6 of the ALCS last October. And the first batter who got on, Howie Kendrick - Posada got him out trying to steal.
Hip Hip, Jorge!

Astros Ride Big Inning To Take Down Nats

The Astros are lucky to score six runs in a game, much less one inning. Heck, the way they've been playing lately, Houston's lucky to score six runs in a weekend.

But, if there's been an inning more indicative of what the Astros want of this reshaped team, it's this one. Jordan Schafer doubled, using his speed to move up to third on an error by Mike Morse. Bourgeois singled him home before J.D. Martinez picked up a hit.

That started a string of four straight singles and scored two more runs, including sending Bourgeois home from second at one point. Jose Altuve then provided the biggest blow of the inning, hitting it back to the pitcher, who quickly threw the ball away and allowed Carlos Lee and Chris Johnson to score, running the total up to 5-0 in the game. Carlos Corporan's bunt single to second allowed Angel Sanchez to score to complete the six-run inning.

This was the 11th time this season Houston has scored five or more runs in an inning and have only scored six in an inning three times before this game.

Wandy Rodriguez continued his late-season run of success, throwing six innings and allowing seven hits, three runs and striking out seven. Aneury Rodriguez, Juan Abreu and David Carpenter added a scoreless inning apiece to round things out.

Now, the Astros face Strasburg-mania on Sunday. I'm very interested to see how this turns out.

Sally Stock Watch: Braves OF Adam Milligan

So some shameless self promotion here, but I am now writing for Scouting the Sally as well as Talking Chop and in one of my first pieces I did was a look back on a scouting piece Mike Newman did on Adam Milligan a couple years ago. Come on over and check out what we have to say.

Braves Lose Again in St. Louis 4-3

Derek Lowe gave up 4 runs in the first 3 innings and the Braves couldn't quite come back.

Derek Lowe's early trouble doomed the Braves at Busch Stadium tonight. After giving up four runs in the first three innings, The Braves couldn't manage to claw back to tie it and fell by a score of 4-3.

In the bottom half of the first inning, Furcal led off the game for the Cardinals with a base hit. Following a stolen base and a groundout to move him to third, Pujols lined a ball past Prado to drive in the game's first run. David Freese later ripped one down the left field line to score Pujols and put St. Louis up by a score of 2-0. Then, in the third, back to back doubles by Holliday and Berkman chased home a run. Berkman crossed the plate when Yadier Molina grounded one up the middle to make the deficit 4-0.

Freddie Freeman did his part to draw the Braves closer to the Cardinals in the fourth. With Uggla on base, Freddie cranked a ball into the left center field seats for his 19th homer on the year. The Braves scored again in the fifth inning when Brian McCann drove in the Cardinal-killing Jason Bourn with a hot shot past Pujols.

Anthony Varvaro pitched a great seventh and eighth inning to keep the Braves' hopes alive. However, Fernando Salas and Jason Motte pitched well enough to seal the 4-3 win for the Cards. St Louis now sits just 5.5 games back of the Braves in the wild card. Atlanta will try to avoid their second straight sweep in a three game series tomorrow when Huddy takes the mound against Jake Westbrook.

Chipper Jones: #2 hitter

Chipper Jones has spent the past few games hitting second. A few quick thoughts on the change. It’s a good spot for him to be hitting. This has been hashed many, many times, but managers frequently neglect the importance of the #2 spot. The #2 spot is where one of the team’s best three hitters [...]
