Albaladejo Getting Ready To Attend DL Party

Peter Abraham/LoHud Yankees Blog:

Jon Albaladejo said his elbow felt like there was a needle going into it followed by a burning sensation. I have no idea what that means, but it isn?t good.

Joe Girardi said Albaladejo would go to New York tomorrow for an MRI and will be placed on the disabled list. Chris ?Frequent Flyer? Britton will turn around and come back.

This marks the second time this season Britton has been optioned out only to return the next day when somebody went on the DL.

Seriously...at what point does it honestly become comical?!?

LaHair possible Sexson replacement

Bryan LaHair (1B-L) is not playing in tonight’s Tacoma @ Iowa game, and he’s on the 40-man, so there’s a fair chance they’ll be shipping him up to play first in Sexson’s absence. It would require a move on the 25-man to get him there, but they could put Vidro on the 15-day retroactive to May 5th for his back, maybe even toss *him* to Tacoma on one of their patented fake DL assignments, and he’d be eligible to come back in a week. Or so.

Anyway, a LaHair move would be good, because it would mean the team realizes Cairo’s not an option, but it would be bad because LaHair is not, his recent success aside, a particularly good player. If the other team can get on the phone to someone in the PCL who’s seen him, he’s probably going to be in trouble. And his defense is bad too. He’s not a good prospect.

Anything can happen in a week’s worth of games, though, and he’s certainly better than Cairo.

Or they could just be giving him the day off.

Update: LaHair’s weighted mean PECOTA forecast was .243/.295/.358, and PECOTA pretty much thinks he shouldn’t ever face a lefty.

Tigers Pound Igawa, Beat Yanks 6-5

R H E N.Y. Yankees 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 3

The Yankees once again fell to a game below .500 with tonight's 6-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers. This is the 4th straight game the Yankees have lost to the Tigers who can't seem to beat anyone else. Kei Igawa started for the Yankees and it was more of the same from him; the ball stayed up and got hit hard. In 3+ innings he allowed 6 runs on 11 hits, and throwing him against a lineup full of very good right-handed hitters like the Tigers have wasn't a smart move by Girardi and Cashman, they set Igawa, and the Yankees up for disaster. Wilson Betemit and his "defense" at third base didn't help matters either as he allowed several balls that should have been caught to get by him, one of which was an error.

The Yankees bullpen continues to do the job; Jonathan Albaladejo threw 2.1 scoreless innings before having to leave the game with an arm injury.

(Peter Abraham reported after the game that Albaladejo said "his elbow felt like there was a needle going into it followed by a burning sensation," and that he was headed to the DL. Chris Britton will make a u-turn and head back to the Yankees tomorrow)

Latroy Hawkins pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, and Edwar Ramirez pitched in with a scoreless inning of his own.

TIGERS PITCHING

The Yankees scored their first run on a Jason Giambi solo HR in the 2nd inning of Tigers' starter Kenny Rogers, the homer was Giambi's team-leading 7th.

The Yanks added another run in the 7th when Chad Moeller hit an RBI single scoring Robinson Cano who had led off the inning with a ground-rule double.

In the 9th the Yankees did make the game very interesting. Wilson Betemit started the inning off with a double (from the left side of the plate - the only side he should ever hit from). He then moved to 3rd on a wild pitch, and was driven home by Cano on a ground out. Johnny Damon then reached on an infield single and moved to 2nd on another wild pitch. After Melky Cabrera grounded out, Derek Jeter drove Damon in with a single to left to cut the Tigers lead to 6-4. The Yankees made it even closer when Bobby Abreu hit a RBI double to cut the lead to 6-5. Hideki Matsui was then intentionally walked. Shelley Duncan came up and on a 1-0 pitch lined out to Curtis Granderson in center to end the game.

At least the team showed some fight. Something we have rarely seen from this bunch this year.

A couple other bright spots; Jason Giambi and Robinson Cano both had multi-hit games, and the Yankees as a team racked up 14 hits. The only problem, they didn't get hit with runners in scoring position, especially early in the game.

Edmonds Out of a Job

The Padres sent Jim Edmonds packing today. The Tranaction Guy reflects on the release: Releasing veterans and eating their salaries- it's what all the cool GM's are doing these days. There are obvious signs of decline in Edmonds' game, but...

Game 35 Open Thread - Orioles (17-18) at Royals
(15-19)

If we can know only one thing about tonight's glorious Royals-Orioles matchup, it is this: Steve Traschel is happy to be here.

Steve Traschel has made over $39 million dollars playing baseball.

Of course, as Royals fans, we prefer Gil Meche's lockjaw smirk of gloom, doom and menacing masculinity and contempt:

Of course, that was last year's picture. Now, we've got this strange animal:

The Royals are 1-13 against the Orioles since 2006.

Marlins look to injury prone Jacobs for big
numbers (AP)

When Mike Jacobs pulled up limping on his way to second base Wednesday, his thoughts weren’t on a 2007 injury that sidelined him for five weeks or a finger sprain from which he only recently returned. He was focused on the ball he had sent to the center-field wall. “I was just wondering where the [...]

Ennui: Astros 7, Dodgers 1

Nothing going on for the Dodgers, Lowe continuing to give up line drives and hard hit balls in the sky — yes, it's about the same for Derek Lowe, who's given up five or more runs in three of his last four outings, and four of five counting this one (though in that span, five of those runs total were unearned). Incidentally, Lowe's 2008 19.4% line drive percentage is about 4% higher than his 15.8% in 2007, and his groundball/flyball out ratio is down to 1.94 from 3.46 last year.

Bottom 9th: Andruw Jones got his only hit of the game, a double that eventually got cashed in on Chin-Lung Hu's groundout to score the Dodgers' only run. Thppt.
