Yankees Could Recall Kennedy For Wednesday

Ed Price/NJ.Com:

I just checked, and as far as I can tell, Ian Kennedy could be called back up to start Wednesday at Tampa Bay instead of Kei Igawa.

Before tonight's game, manager Joe Girardi said "there's no situation we've talked (about) as of right now" that would keep the Yankees from starting Igawa again Wednesday at Tampa Bay.

But that was before tonight's awful performance.

Baseball rules require an optioned player, such as Kennedy, to spend 10 days in the minors before returning (unless he replaces a player put on the disabled list). Kennedy was optioned last Sunday, so the 10th day is Tuesday. From what I am told, the 10-day count begins the day of the assignment, not the day the player physically reports to the minor-league team (last Monday, in Kennedy's case).

The bottom line: If the Yankees don't want to give Igawa another turn, they can use Kennedy on Wednesday. It would take some sort of creative scheduling, since Kennedy pitched Tuesday and is scheduled to go again Sunday.

Farnsworth Appeal Succesful--Reduced To 1 Game

Bryan Hoch/MLB.Com:

Kyle Farnsworth had his suspension reduced from three games to one by Major League Baseball on Friday following an appeal by the Yankees reliever.

Farnsworth will serve the suspension on Friday, when the Yankees play the Tigers at Comerica Park.

"One is definitely better than three," Farnsworth said. "It was a good deal. Our appeal went well. I thought it was going to be two [games] at the least, so I was happy to hear that."

"I'm glad it's over with and behind us," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We'll miss him tonight, but we get him back tomorrow."

Farnsworth was originally suspended for three games and fined $2,000 for throwing a fastball behind the neck of the Red Sox's Manny Ramirez in the seventh inning of the Yankees' 7-5 loss on April 17, after Ramirez had homered twice earlier in the game.

A-Rod On Road To Recovery...Please Hurry

Bryan Hoch/MLB.Com:

A-Rod took 57 swings and fielded 31 balls on Friday, according to The Associated Press. He had resumed similar activities at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday before leaving for Tampa on Thursday, eyeing an MRI early next week that would permit him to begin a rehabilitation assignment in extended spring training action.

According to the AP, Rodriguez hit several long homers, including a pair that went over the center-field backdrop. He also ran in the outfield. Rodriguez said the session went "good" and gave a thumbs-up as he left the field for the clubhouse.

Albaladejo to the DL

If you didn't see it in my game summary, Jonathan Alabaladejo is headed to the DL after leaving tonight's game with an arm injury.

From MLB.com:

Albaladejo was lifted in the sixth inning after he felt pain similar to a needle in the bone part of his right elbow. An initial diagnosis taken at Comerica Park revealed an elbow strain or sprain, but the Yankees will send Albaladejo to New York on Monday for an MRI and more conclusive tests.

"I know that I had a chance to stay for pretty much the whole year," Albaladejo said. "I'm pretty disappointed that this happened to me."
Chris Britton will probably rejoin the Yankees tomorrow to take Albaladejo's place.

Does Japan Offer A Return Policy For Terrible
Pitchers

Bryan Hoch/MLB.Com:

Kei Igawa was hit hard and often in his first start of the season, making an early exit as the Yankees dropped a 6-5 decision to the Tigers at Comerica Park on Friday in the opener of a seven-game road trip for New York.

Recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start in place of demoted righty Ian Kennedy, the 28-year-old left-hander continued his struggles at the big league level, recording just two swinging strikes among the 64 pitches he threw over three-plus innings.

First things first. Fire the scout that thought it would be a wonderful decision to bring Kei Igawa to New York instead of Matsuzaka.

Second, now we all can clearly understand what was pissing Ian Kennedy off. I mean, I guess you really had no choice but to demote him but if I was being demoted so that freaking Kei Igawa could start in my place, I would have said a little bit more about how pissed I was than Kennedy did.

Third, bring Kennedy back up, without question. Ouch. Just two swinging strikes in 64 pitches? Really? I haven't pitched since high school, but I am pretty darn sure I could do no worse.
