David Wells may want to pitch for the Yankees, but at this point, the Bombers don't appear to have much interest in bringing the aging lefthander back to the Bronx.
Wells, who turns 45 on May 20, is hoping to pitch a shortened
season, and a return to New York would clearly be his first preference. Gregg Clifton, Wells' agent, hasn't been in touch with the Yankees yet, but he has heard through different channels that Hank Steinbrenner may be interested in a pinstriped return for Wells.
"We'll wait and see what happens over the weekend," Clifton said. "I'm sure the Yankees want to see what they can do in-house first."
Steinbrenner didn't return a phone call yesterday, but a source with knowledge of the team's thinking said the Yankees are not interested in signing Wells, who posted a 5.43 ERA pitching for the Dodgers and Padres last season. but could eventually look for outside help if they decide Igawa and/or Darrell Rasner aren't cutting it.
General manager Brian Cashman wouldn't comment on the possibility of a Wells return, saying only, "Our first inclination is to look from within before we try to do anything outside."
Clifton said Wells, who last pitched for the Yanks in 2003, has been throwing and doing conditioning work, and he would need just two weeks to get in game shape. Wells, who went 68-28 in his first two stints in the Bronx, is looking to make 20-25 starts, much like the abbreviated seasons Roger Clemens pitched for the past couple of years.

Add to myYahoo!Amalio Diaz was perfect through three innings, but gave up the tyingruns in the fourth and the go-ahead runs in the sixth. Fortunately,light-hitting Abel Nieves had other ideas, and hit a grand slam in thetop of the ninth with nobody out, which eventually became the winningtally. Aaron Cook got his second save. Sammy Leon, previously withCedar Rapids and making his third appearance in the Cal League thisyear, picked up his first win at this level.2008-05-09: Cedar Rapids 5, Wisconsin 0 # Moore: 2-4, 1 3B, 1 BB, 2 K
Romine: 0-4, 1 BB
Anton: (W, 5-1), 9.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 8 K, 2 BB, 2.09 ERA
Michael Anton pitched an excellent game, a completegame four-hit shutout for his fifthstraight victory in six consecutivedecisions and seven starts. "That'sthe first complete-game shutout of my career", he said afterwards.
The game was in a scoreless tie throughsix; the Kernels finally broke through in the top of the seventh on anunearned run when 3B Alex Liddi misplayed Angel Castillo's grounder, scoring Jay Brossman.
In the bottom of the seventh, with Gavin Dickey at third and oneout, Alex Liddi hit a fly ball to left that Jeremy Moore returned tocatcher Chris Rosenbaum. As Dickey tagged and headed home,Rosenbaum bobbled the ball but home plateumpire Brent Rice made no call as Dickey passed the plate; apparentlyRosenbaum didn't feel Dickey had touched the plate, and Rosenbaumalertly recovered the ball and tagged Dickey for the double play.Dickey and Liddi both argued the call, resulting in their ejectionfrom the game.
Wisconsin immediately became discombobulated following that, becauseJerry Gonzalez-Lopez reached on an error, and a wild pitch by WalterSuriel allowed him to get to second. Two consecutive walks loaded thebases, and Efren Navarro, Jr. singled in a pair. That brought in JoseEscalona, who wildpitched in another run. With Jay Brossman re-loading the bases on asingle, Escalona balked in another runner. 1B Ronald Garth's fieldingerror allowed Gordie Gronkowski to reach, and the bases re-re-loadedwhen the third pitcher of the inning, Ryan Moorer, hit the firstbatter he faced, Angel Castillo, but retired the next two batters hefaced to end the bleeding. Whew.
Rubbing salt into the wound, Wisconsin hit into an inning-ending,unassisted lineout double play in the bottom of the eighth.2008-05-09: Orem did not play2008-05-09: AZL Angels did not play2008-05-09: Memphis 3, Las Vegas 4 # LaRoche: 1-4

Exactly the reverse of last night's score,Memphis led this game through the middle of the seventh, at which timethe 51's tied it up 3-3. Las Vegas made their big push in the eighth, with a rally sparked by Andy LaRoche's leadoff single; nabbing hisfirst stolen base of the year, he elicited a bad throw by catcher MarkJohnson that got him to third, and Xavier Paul's RBI single plated himfor the go-ahead run. 2008-05-09: Carolina 6, Jacksonville 3 # De Jesus: 1-5, 2 K

Josh Wall nailed down his fifth straight win; Paul Koss pitched two innings of shutout ball while striking out four. USC product Koss has one or more strikeouts per relief appearance since April 6, and has a 9.43 K/9 on the season.2008-05-09: Great Lakes vs. Dayton: Postponed # Due to rain; the game has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader for tomorrow.2008-05-09: Ogden did not play2008-05-09: GCL Dodgers did not play

Add to myYahoo!Thank goodness that powerhouse Rangers team is out of here. Contreras v Silva, 7:10.
I’m eagerly looking forward to what Baker teased:
McLaren also had some interesting stuff to say about the state of the team — including that he is now putting what he thinks is the best nine out there each day without worrying about hurting anyone’s feelings — and I’ll get to that a little later.
So before he was putting out what he thought was a poor nine because he was worrying about feelings?
Does this mean that he and the team now feel that coming up with a better lineup is more important than having happy players and, presumably, a more harmonious clubhouse?
Who exactly was McLaren coddling, and why?
I hope these questions and more will be answered.
And if I could ask a favor, it would be great if despair didn’t veer into strange vaguely sexist territory tonight. No one’s going to be happy if this all slides into Ban Fest 2008.

Add to myYahoo!Ted Lilly and the Chicago Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks as the teams played each other for the first time since the Diamondbacks swept the Cubs last postseason. Lilly pitched great as he tossed seven innings and only allowed three hits and one run while striking out ten batters.
Most Cubs fans probably thought oh crap here we go again as Chris Young took Lilly deep for a home run in the first inning but after that Lilly setteled down and controlled the Diamondbacks hitters.
Kerry Wood picked up his sixth save as he closed the door on the Dbacks in the ninth inning.
At the plate for the Cubs, they got a run in the fifth inning on a Lilly single that scored Mark DeRosa and then Alfonso Soriano doubled to score Reed Johnson. In the seventh inning, Derrek Lee connected for his ninth home run of the season to put the Cubs up 3-1.
Now that was a big win that the Cubs were really needing to get as they start a ten game homestand. On Saturday, the Cubs will send Ryan Dempster to the mound against the Diamondbacks rookie stud Max Scherzer. Hopefully we will see the Cubs pick up another win over the Diamondbacks!

Add to myYahoo!Bryan Hoch/MLB.com:
After missing most of Spring Training due to injury, Sean Henn has found a new opportunity in San Diego. The left-hander was claimed off waivers by the Padres from the Yankees on Friday.
Henn, 27, was 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA in eight relief appearances this season between Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Class A Tampa. He was designated for assignment to create a roster spot on April 30, when the Yankees signed catcher Chad Moeller to a Major League contract.
Originally considered a contender to make New York's bullpen out of Spring Training as a lefty specialist, Henn was limited to just three Grapefruit League appearances due to tendinitis in his left shoulder and was outpitched by non-roster invitee Billy Traber, who subsequently made the Yankees' Opening Day roster.
