Add to myYahoo! The Mets took the series with a win in the rubber game tonight behind a huge game by Jon Niese. He was throwing no-hits through three innings and went 7.2 innings allowing only the one run. He ended up allowing only 3 hits and had 8 strikeouts. The curve ball was working again. He really ... The last time the Braves swept the Marlins in Florida, Jair Jurrjens was nine years old.
Jurrjens dominated the Marlins, not allowing a run until the seventh inning, and the Braves finish off a sweep of the Marlins with another 3-2 victory. The sweep is the first for the Braves in Florida since May 1995. The loss extended the Marlins' losing streak to eight games, seven of them by one run.
Marlins starter Chris Volstad didn't pitch all that bad either, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Both he and Jurrjens kept the opposing offense at bay for much of the game, but the Braves were finally able to strike first in the sixth. Leading off, Matt Young reached base when he knocked a slow ground ball that refused to roll foul along the first base line. Jurrjens sacrificed him over and with two outs, Alex Gonzalez drove a double off the top of the high left field wall to score Young.
The offense tacked on some much-needed insurance runs in the seventh. Singles from Freddie Freeman and Brooks Conrad put runners at the corners with two outs for Matt Young. Volstad's 1-2 pitch narrowly missed Young and went to the wall, allowing Freeman to score without a play. Jurrjens then helped himself with a single to score Conrad.
The Marlins put together three straight hits in the bottom of the inning. Mike Stanton hit a towering home run to left with two outs and John Buck smacked a double on the very next pitch. Two pitches later, Emilio Bonifacio drove him in with a single to right.
That's as far as they could get, though. Eric O'Flaherty pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Jonny Venters easily shut down the Marlins in the ninth for his second save to complete the sweep.
Sweeping this series was a nice recovery from losing four of six. The Braves travel to Houston next.

Add to myYahoo! The Royals have promoted mega-prospect Mike Moustakas to the Major Leagues.
Moose was rated the #9 prospect in minor league baseball by Baseball America this off-season. Moustakas was hitting .287/.347/.498 at AAA Omaha. He now joins fellow franchise cornerstone Eric Hosmer.
Moustakas, taken second overall in the 2007 Draft has been considered one of baseball's top hitting prospects for the last few years. 2010 was a big comeback season for Moose, who rallied from BA's #80 prospect to, as mentioned, the #9 prospect, on the heels of a combined .322/.369/.630 season at AA & AAA. A recent scouting report of Moustakas had this to say:
Compared to when I've seen him in the past, he was more selective at the plate, but still showed the compact-but-powerful swing that makes him very dangerous. Although he's not as thick around the waist and legs as he looked in 2009, he's still slow and I don't think his body is going to age well. The bat will be excellent though and is nearly major league ready in my view.
The Royals have optioned Mike Aviles to Omaha, deciding instead to keep Betemit, who will never play and has no position. So now the roster officially makes no sense. In that sense. So with our side of Moose we're also served all you can eat Escobar and Getz.
