Today's Game, the Injury Bug & Trembley

This afternoon, the record will show that the Orioles lost 4-3lost 4-3 in exhibition action against the Philadelphia PhilliesPhiladelphia Phillies; however, today?s game was important for one main reason: Justin Duchscherer.

The right-hander, who has not pitched much the last two years due to a hip injury, plus clinical depression faced a tough Philadelphia lineup and tossed two scoreless innings. Duchscherer was solidDuchscherer was solid, as he gave up one hit and ran into trouble in the second inning; however, he was able to get out of it.

The important thing: Duchscherer finished the game pain free.

Brian Matusz ? in his first start since having a wart removed from his pitching finger ? went 2 1/3 innings and struggled a bit. He would give up a homer to Ryan Howard, but overall, it?s good to see him on the mound and suffering no ill effects from his procedure.

The bullpen ? Chris George, Mike Gonzalez, and Jim Johnson ? did their job until the ninth inning where Adrian Rosario struggled and gave up a game-winning two-run to Carlos Rivera in the bottom of the ninth.

The Orioles got on the board early jumping on Philadelphia?s Cole Hamels ? who went four innings. Baltimore took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a Jake Fox RBI-double, followed up by a Josh Bell sacrifice-fly.

Bell also had another RBI in the sixth inning off closer Brad Lidge.

In light of the Orioles? loss, they have some more pressing issues at hand. As James alluded to in a late post yesterday, they have issues ? on the injury front.

You dont know what Winning is until youve seen
Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen is putting on a show for the ages. He’s been captivating audiences with his bizarre ranting, which I find hysterical. In his latest video, he dons a Yankees warm-up sweatshirt, so I thought he deserved a plug on the blog just for that. This is the same guy who owns Babe Ruth’s 1927 World Series [...]

Mariners blank Giants 1-0

Jason Vargas pitched three strong innings and Ryan Langerhans drilled an RBI triple to give the Seattle Mariners (5-4) a 1-0 Cactus League win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.

The Giants fell to 9-4 with the loss. That's the same record the eventual World Champs had last spring through 13 games.

Ryan Vogelsong made his second spring start, in place of the injured Matt Cain. Vogelsong was a victim of wildness, allowing two hits and walking three batters in his four innings of work in front of 6,123 people at Peoria Sports Complex.

After Vogelsong walked Justin Smoak with one out in the fourth, Langerhans tripled in the game's only run, ending an eight-inning scoreless streak for Vogelsong, who struck out five batters today.

Mariners starter Jason Vargas gave up just two hits and and a walk (to Nate Schierholtz) in his three innings of work.

Buster Posey's six-game hitting streak ended.
Other notes:

  • Catcher Eli Whiteside (inflamed elbow) made the start as the designated hitter today. Before the game, Andrew Baggarly reports, he was throwing to bases with no problem. He could possibly start behind the dish on Thursday.
  • Speedy outfielder Darren Ford (who leads the Cactus League with four stolen bases) laid down a pretty bunt single in the third inning that Mariners third baseman Matt Mangini didn't even try to throw. A couple minutes later, Ford got picked off first base by Vargas. You win some, you lose some.
  • The Giants have had multi-run scoring innings in 10 of their 13 Cactus League games. They have scored three or more runs in an inning nine times this spring and four or more runs six times.

How to beard yourself like Brian Wilson

I just ran across this article over at The McSweeney's Store, a fine smallish division of Dave Egger's popular 1998 literary journal.

For a measly eight bucks, you can purchase a full color poster that gives you the colonel's secret recipe (er, I mean Brian Wilson's secret recipe --- he was a sea captain after all, not a colonel) for growing a beard just like that of the San Francisco Giants closer.

Jon Adams, the creator of the poster (click the image below for a larger look) has figured out how B-Weez does it.

First of all, according to Adams, you must be someone who can grow a beard. That leaves out most women (my ex-mother-in-law excluded) and young boys. Sorry, kids, this is a PG-13 activity.

Of course, the beard needs to be three or four shades darker than your hair color. That's a given.

Now the real secret isn't in the hair dye. Or latex paint. Or engine oil, charcoal, or tar for that matter.

Nope. If you really want to grow a beard like Brian Wilson, you........

Well, I better stop there. If it's worth $8 to you, you'll go buy one of them-there fancy posters and hang it next to your bathroom mirror.

Brewers RHP Greinke likely to open on DL (AP)

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Zack Greinke is likely to begin the season on the disabled list because of a fractured right rib he injured while playing pickup basketball in the offseason. The former AL Cy Young winner is expected to be out two to four weeks. Initial X-rays were negative, but an MRI exam Monday revealed [...]

Phillies Hamels sets down 11 straight (AP)

Cole Hamels worked the kinks out of his delivery and got instant results. Hamels set down the last 11 batters he faced, Ryan Howard homered again and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 Tuesday. “That’s pitching. I was able to make the adjustments,” Hamels said. “You just try to make one good pitch [...]

Yanks Garcia runs scoreless streak to 5 (AP)

Freddy Garcia, Ivan Nova, Bartolo Colon and Sergio Mitre, they’re all making life very difficult on New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi — in a good way. Garcia tossed three scoreless innings to help the Yankees beat the Braves 5-4 in front of a packed house at Disney World’s Champion Stadium on Tuesday.

Michael Bourn: Making the Most of His

The Astros have had a rough past few years searching for talent. A lousy minor league system and the inability to develop talent properly have led to many trades of their so-called "stars." Arguably the best piece they got in return from one of Wade's[...]

It's a minor league deal, which suggests he'll be taking the place of someone who was slated for Triple-A. Corporan or Towles perhaps?
