Posey is "exuberantly optimistic" that he will be
ready for spring training

Giants catcher Buster Posey spoke with a few thousand fans in the stands before Saturday's game to talk about his condition, whether he thinks he will be ready for spring training and what he plans to do with his crutches once he's off them for good.

Here's the full Q&A, compliments of Carl Steward of the San Jose Mercury News:

Q: You say you want to catch some bullpen sessions before the end of the year?
BP: Yeah, before I go home for the off-season. There no set time, but I figure it?ll be sometime in October.

Q: Have you taken any steps without the crutches yet?
BP: Today. Today actually was the first day. I took a couple of laps in the weight room, but everything felt great, so that was really exciting. Hopefully, within 2-3 days, I can completely ditch this thing and just wear the boot.

Q: How long have you actually been bearing weight on the ankle?
BP: Maybe 10-11 days.

Q: Have you been working on primarily upper body stuff?
BP: Yeah, I've been working out doing upper body, gosh, for awhile now. Just a few weeks after surgery, probably, so I've been doing upper body for a couple months.

Q: So do you feel like you?ve made a lot of progress?
BP: It?s hard to say. Just as a baseball player, you lose your legs so much and I haven?t been able to do any strengthening in my legs. So I think that?s going to be the next step over the next month, be able to do some of those exercises that I haven?t been able to do.

Q: Did you like hearing the fan reaction?
BP: These guys are great. You try not to take it for granted.

Q: Forget getting back to baseball, do you feel like you?re part of the human race again now that you can move around so well?
BP: Yeah, that?s a good way to put it. Just being on one crutch and having the ability to use my left hand to carry something is nice because you?re just so limited with two crutches.

Q: You mentioned possibly hitting off the tee at some point before the season?s over?
BP: It?s all dependent on how much progress we make in the next month or so. I think Dave Groeschner would have a better timetable than I do on that.

Q: Cautious optimistic to be ready for spring training?
BP: No, I don?t feel it?s cautious. I don?t think it?s cautious at all. I think it?s exuberant optimism.

Q: At the point you can do rehab on the foot and the legs, I imagine you?ll be pushing it as hard as you can?
BP: It?s one of those things that even a couple 2-3 weeks after surgery, they were taking it out and working on range of motion. So we?ve been doing stuff for awhile now. But I?m just going to listen what they say. Our trainers have a plan and I think it?s important not to deviate from that. Could I probably push some things harder than I should? Yeah, but I think we risk some setbacks. I want this thing to be good as new when I?m finally able to use it again.

Q: Do you do some form of rehab every day, or do you take some days off?
BP: Yeah, every day the team?s at home, I?m in here doing stuff. When they?re on the road, it?s five days a week. I?ll have a couple days to recover and rest, which is going to be more important I think from what I?ve heard with some of the weightlifting, just to give your muscles a chance to rebuild and recover.

Q: What are you going to do with those crutches when you?re finally off them for good?
BP: Burn ?em.
