Comments are Off

While I've never had a huge following of people who leave comments on my reports, there have been a few. I wanted to tell you guys that I've had to turn comments off on the site for the time being.

The problem is that I've been carpet bombed by spammers attempting to well, spam the heck out of my site. The problem is that they're so overloaded my site with attempts that it's swamping the entire server. The physical server that this site resides on also has a few other sites, all of which are being trashed by this move.

I've temporarily removed the file that allows for comments until I can figure out a way to better protect the site from that kind of thing. Sorry about that to the three of you who seem to comment (and Kurt). :)

Series preview: STL (2-4) at SF (2-4)

It's home sweet home for the defending World Champion San Francisco Giants as they open a six-game homestand against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday.

The Giants are coming off a 2-4 road trip, where they managed to outscore the Dodgers and Padres in their two wins by a combined score of 18-4. All four losses came within one or two runs. But as Tim Lincecum said to his teammates after his pre-game warm-ups Wednesday: "This is where we get our season going boys." (Lincecum promptly went out and threw 13 strikeouts in the Giants' 8-4 win over San Diego.)

The Cardinals are coming off a six-game season-opening homestand and -- after an off-day Thursday -- are embarking on a 10-game road trip against the Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Cards have won three of their last four after dropping their first two games of the regular season.

If you're going:
Make sure you arrive early to any of the three sold-out contests this weekend. Huge traffic delays are expected. If you're going on Friday, pack an umbrella (there's a chance of showers). No rain expected for Saturday or Sunday, though. Bring your camera. Bring your Flip. Bring a few Hall's lozenges for your sure-to-be raw throat. Wear your Orange & Black.

Rankings:
Avg. -- Giants .264 (2nd in NL West, 8th in NL); Cardinals .231 (5th in NL Central, 12th in NL)
Runs -- Giants 28 (1st in NL West, 4th in NL); Cardinals 15 (6th in NL Central, 12th in NL)
HR -- Giants 7 (1st in NL West, 2nd in NL); Cardinals 2 (5th in NL Central, 7th in NL)
ERA -- Giants 3.06 (2nd in NL West, 4th in NL); Cardinals 3.70 (3rd in NL Central, 8th in NL)

2010 Series:
The teams split the 2010 series, 3-3, with both teams winning 2-out-of-three on their home turf.

Friday: Jonathan Sanchez (0-1, 3.18) vs. Jake Westbrook (0-1, 16.62), 1:35 p.m. PDT, CSN Bay Area/KNBR 680 AM

Sanchez, 28, gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks in 5.2 innings in his first start of the season, against the Dodgers on Friday. Career numbers against Cardinals, too. The lefty has faced St. Louis twice in his career and is 2-0 lifetime with a 2.19 ERA in 12.1 innings. He has walked nine batters in that span, while striking out 10, so he'll need to be careful and control his pitches if he hopes to pick up his first win if the season.Opposing him will be Westbrook, the 33-year-old St. Louis right-hander who followed up a rough spring (4.44 ERA in 24.1 Grapefruit League innings) with a rough first outing of the regular season (eight earned runs in 4.1 innings). In his loss to the Padres last Saturday -- when he walked five and gave up six hits -- Westbrook said he simply didn't throw enough strikes. Westbrook has faced the Giants just once in his career, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks in a 6-3, six-inning loss on Aug. 20 of last year.

Saturday: Matt Cain (1-0, 0.00) vs. Jaime Garcia (1-0, 0.00), 7:05 p.m. PDT, CSN Bay Area/KNBR 680 AM

Cain continued his scoreless inning streak in last week's 10-0 win over the Dodgers, where he lasted six innings and scattered five hits while striking out three and walking none. Cain did not allow an earned run in 21.1 innings during the 2010 playoffs. In five career starts (covering 28.2 innings) against the Cards, he has a 1-2 record to go along with a 4.71 ERA. He has a 6.6 SO/9 rate and 1.75 SO/BB ratio against St. Louis.Garcia, 24, was brilliant in his first start of the 2011 season on Sunday, where he pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout against the Padres. In nine innings, he struck out nine and walked just two. The left-hander has faced the Giants twice in his young career, going 1-1 with a 1.20 ERA over 15 innings (10 H, 3 BB, 8 K, 2 ER).

Sunday: Barry Zito (0-0, 4.50) vs. Kyle Lohse (0-1, 5.14), 1:05 p.m. PDT, CSN Bay Area/KNBR 680 AM
Zito had a terrible first inning in his 2011 debut on Sunday against the Dodgers where he gave up all three runs in the opening frame before finally settling into a groove. The Giants were not able to recover, losing to L.A. 7-5. The 32-year old lefty has faced the Cards seven times during his career with a 1-5 mark and 5.02 ERA (37.2 IP, 47 H, 20 BB, 21 ER, 29 K). Lohse lost his first game of the season Monday, 4-3, to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He gave up four earned runs in seven innings in that game while striking out five and walking one. Lifetime against the G-men, Lohse is 2-2 in four starts (25.1 IP, 35 H, 3 BB, 14 K) with a 4.62 ERA.
Outlook:
As long as the Giants don't become distracted by all the pomp and circumstance going on this weekend as they honor their 2010 accomplishments, they should be fine. The Cardinal bats have not yet awakened and AT&T Park isn't exactly the place where sleeping bats arise. Let's hope Albert Pujols (.182/.240/.318, 1 HR, 3 RBI) continues to slump.

Prediction:
The Giants will take two-of-three in this series.

Harper has 2 hits, RBI in first pro game (AP)

Bryce Harper hit an RBI single in his first professional at-bat, a nifty start in Class A for the overall No. 1 draft pick last summer by the Washington Nationals. LAPD To Deploy More Cops In Dodger Stadium Maybe

The Times is reporting that Dodger Stadium will see a large increase in the number of LAPD officers at games. However:

When asked whether the cost of adding additional officers would be passed on to Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, Beck said he expected the Dodgers would foot the bill. Villaraigosa declined to say whether he had a formal commitment from McCourt to pay what could quickly become a six-figure cost, depending on how big the response and how many games it lasts. Discussions with McCourt and his staff to reach an agreement are ongoing, Villaraigosa said.
Oh, wait — actual moneyz will be involved???!!! Oh, noes!!!11!!1!! SRSLY, this isn't actually going to happen, or if it does, the details, when announced, will be vital.

this weekend

The World Champion San Francisco Giants are home at last.

On Friday, ceremonies will begin at 12:45 p.m. with the 2010 World Series Championship flag being raised for the first time in San Francisco Giants history. Local Grammy Award winning recording artists Train, will perform prior to introductions and first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. with gates opening at 10:35 a.m.  The first 40,000 fans will receive AT&T Opening Day Calendars

Then on Saturday, Giants players, coaches, staff and executives will receive their World Series rings at 6:15 p.m. Rocker Sammy Hagar will be performing the National Anthem. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. The first 20,000 fans will receive a commemorative AT&T World Series ring key chain.

On Sunday, Rookie of the Year Award winner Buster Posey will be honored before the game for his 2010 season. The first 20,000 fans will receive a Buster Posey Pin and throwing out the first pitch with Posey will be past Giants Rookie of the Year Award winners, Willie Mays (1951), Orlando Cepeda (1958), Willie McCovey (1959), Gary Matthews (1973), John Montefusco (1975). On Monday, San Francisco will begin a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The club is partnering with Stow?s employer, American Medical Response, to collect donations at the gates and throughout the ballpark for The Bryan Stow Fund. The Giants made an initial $10,000 contribution to the fund and the Giants Community Fund is holding a silent auction during Monday?s game with all the proceeds benefiting The Bryan Stow Fund.

The first 20,000 fans on Monday will receive an AT&T Giants magnetic schedule and members of Cirque du Soleil will perform the National Anthem.

Traffic delays are expected throughout the weekend and fans are being urged to get to the park early.
