Add to myYahoo! Joe Maddon probably knows the truth, or most of it. Hellickson's probably going to give up a lot more hits this season than last, and there's not much that Maddon can do about it. Yes, he can position his fielders "properly" and that's going to help.[...]

So... you like the Royals better than at least three other teams in the AL Central. By wide margins. 90% of you think the Royals are better than the Twins, 86% feel that way towards the White Sox, and 78% believe the Royals are better than the Indians.
Before we get to the big question, which appears to be are the Royals better than the Tigers, let's mix it up by addressing a few other teams. Given that Royals fans seen to be indicating that the Royals are at least close to being a .500 team and a good bet for at least second the AL Central, let's compare them to a little tougher competition: the Blue Jays.
Blue Jays in a box: 2011 record: 81-81. 2011 Pythag: 79-83. Additions: Francisco Cordero, Kyle Davies, Ben Francisco, Jason Frasor, Trystan Magnuson, Jeff Mathis, Darren Oliver, RIck VandenHurk Losses: Shawn Camp, Frank Francisco, Chad Gaudin, Brad Mills, Jayson Nix, Brian Tallet
The Jays are often talked about as victims of their schedule. That appears to be the case last season. Against the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays, the Blue Jays went 21-33. Against everyone else they went 60-48. Of course, everyone had to play the Al East triad too, and just about everyone struggled against them, to some degree. The Blue Jays just have to play them more. I think you see the effect more when you substitute out teams. The Royals played a zillion games against the Twins, for example. Well, the Blue Jays faced them for six games total. The tipping point here that third high-quality team. That means that other than the Orioles, you just never get a break.

The Rockies beat the Diamondbacks in their 2nd Spring Training game today by a score of 6-5. It definitely looked like a Spring Training game, too, as both teams combined for 6 errors, 2 directly leading to runs (1 for each team).
Jhoulys Chacin got the start for Colorado, and didn't have his best stuff. Chacin allowed 3 runs (1ER) over his 2IP of work, while striking out a guy, walking a guy, and allowing a home run. He also had 4 groundouts to 1 flyout, so that's very promising.
Christian Friedrich came in behind Chacin for his own 2 innings, allowing 0 runs on 1 hit and 2 punchouts.
Matt Belisle and Josh Sullivan also tossed scoreless frames, Sullivan getting the win.
It was a game of many heroes. Nolan Arenado and Johnny Herrera both had RBI doubles, Chad Tracy hit a sac fly, and Ben Paulsen, true to Spring Training form, hit a homer.
Box Score and Video after the jump.

Add to myYahoo! Before delving into my constantly evolving (and therefore somewhat arbitrary) rankings, I felt it would be prudent to provide a few token honorable mentions:
Zoilo Almonte has all the makings of a league-average corner outfielder. He's a switch hitter with five average or so tools (and increasing productivity against southpaws), and he could probably fake center field in a pinch without embarrassing himself terribly. The shockingly still only 22-year-old Jairo Heredia is perpetually a healthy year away from rocketing up the list, featuring above-average command and control on three potentially average offerings and fairly sound mechanics. Graham Stoneburner was featured prominently on this list last year, but injuries and slipping effectiveness revealed some nicks in the bedrock in what most would consider a low-risk, low-reward type prospect. David Adams, despite his injuries, continues to impress me with a fine approach at the plate, plus bat speed, and surprisingly strong defense at the keystone. At nearly 25, however, it is difficult to be ambitious with a player that has lost nearly a year of development ... with all of 173 PA above High-A. I really wanted to put Isaias Tejeda on the list, but he is simply too much of an unknown commodity for me to feel comfortable doing so. He is incredibly raw in all facets of the game, but he has above-average contact skills and athleticism, and that in and of itself is a sound foundation to build upon. And finally, Brandon Laird has made himself into a fine defender at third (and a passable defender in the other corners), which sounds appealing when taken in conjunction with his above-average power. His contact issues and lack of discipline, however, may limit him to a platoon role going forward.
